Hasbro CEO Chris Cocks has told Bloomberg that they will no longer be co-financing films based on Hasbro IP. While Hasbro will continue to license its IP to other film companies such as Lionsgate and Sony, Hasbro is stepping out of the film business with the disappointing box office returns of Transformers One and Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. Cocks, who came to Hasbro from Microsoft in 2016, was put in charge of Hasbro's card game, Magic: the Gathering before becoming CEO two years ago after the death of the previous CEO Brian Goldner. Cocks is focusing more on upcoming video games to try to "reach fans where they play" by ear marking $100 - $150 million a year to producing video games based on Hasbro's IP. Games mentioned were the upcoming GI JOE game, Exodus made by Bioware, and an unannounced Dungeons and Dragons game. No word on any upcoming Transformers video games, but stay tuned to the news feed to find out as soon as we hear anything. Want to interact with more Transformers fans? Things have not been going well for Power Rangers fans as of late. When Hasbro purchased the brand for $522 million back in 2018, things looked good to start. Their first series, Power Rangers Beast Morphers, adapted a Super Sentai show fans thought would never be, and used it to tie up some loose ends from a beloved series from a decade prior. They followed up on this with Power Rangers Dino Fury and the much shorter Netflix-exclusive Power Rangers Cosmic Fury. And, besides a 30th anniversary special which tied in to Cosmic Fury, that was it. There was talk of a new movie and/or a reboot of the franchise, but those plans apparently stalled out. Meanwhile, Hasbro has apparently divested itself of its toy-making responsibilities to the brand by licensing it out to Playmates, so they can do it instead. Still, hope persisted, as it usually does. That is, until the auction was announced. It was revealed back in October that Hasbro would be getting rid of all the various Power Rangers props, suits, and other material used to create the show for the past 30 years via Heritage Auctions. Three decades of television history. Japan gets a Super Sentai museum exhibit for their history, and we get an online auction for ours. Suffice to say, it's not been a popular move among fans nor the people who brought us the show, who were even explicitly told they weren't allowed to keep the jackets that had been tailor made for them, in at least one series' case. Via Gizmodo: And it wasn't even a charity auction, either, which would at least be in the spirit of so many of the characters people grew up with and idolized. No, Hasbro instead seems desperate to claw back whatever they can of their initial investment to reline their pockets, history and all others be damned. Well, fair enough, we suppose. After all, they are a corporation, and corporations, as you might have heard, are here to make money. So, how much money did they make? Well, if you somehow missed it in the title, here's a more precise figure for you, anyway: $3,310,929. Gizmodo highlighted some of the items which garnered a higher price. The highest bid of $87,500 went to the Cosmic Blaster (left), the combined form of the weapons wielded by the Cosmic Fury Rangers in what may be the show's final season. A slightly more modest $47,500 was put down for the filming miniature Astro Megaship (center), headquarters to the Space Rangers in the popular Power Rangers in Space series and fully capable of converting into the Astro Megazord (right). Other items that were on the chopping -- er, auction block included the Green Ranger suit worn by the late Jason David Frank in his role as the ultra-popular Tommy Oliver, which went for $30.000, as well as the original Mighty Morphin Pink Ranger's costume ($22,500) and Mighty Morphin Yellow Ranger's costume ($23,750). Well done, Hasbro. 30 years of Rangers and the people behind them are proud of you for making back 0.63% of what you spent to kill the franchise, we're sure. If you're interested in what else was up for grabs and what it fetched, you can check it all out here, though you'll need an account to pull up the final amounts. Join the Allspark today. It has long been the stuff of Marvel and Transformers legend: When writer Simon Furman created the character of Death's Head, it was decided that Marvel should own the character, rather than Hasbro, the owner of the Transformers property, and to whom any characters who first appeared within the pages of that licensed book would belong. And so Marvel created a short, one-page comic starring the freelance peacekeeping agent called "High Noon Tex" to run in their other publications before he appeared in 1987's The Transformers #113, thus ensuring their ownership of the character. At least, that's what we were told. In the following video, Wixhael takes us through the early history of the character, statements from Simon Furman and Marvel UK Editor Richard Starkings, and shows why all the explanations as to how the character ostensibly belongs to Marvel don't really add up. What do you think? Is there more to the puzzle? Did Marvel UK pull a fast one? Is there more to the contract we don't know? Did Marvel UK even have to adhere to the same contract as drawn up by Marvel in the USA? Did Hasbro just say "Nah, you can keep him" behind closed doors? Or, as far as we know, should Hasbro be the rightful owner of Death's Head? Tell us your thoughts down below! As the world prepares itself for the release of G.I. Joe: Wrath of Cobra in mere days, more news has come out about the fate of another video game adventure featuring A Real American Hero. Released in 2020, G.I. Joe: Operation Blackout is a team-based third-person shooter pitting six members of a daring highly-trained special mission force against six of those from a ruthless terrorist organization determined to rule the world. Options range from running through a story campaign with local split-screen co-op to 4-player "player versus player" matches, featuring modes such as Capture the Flag, King of the Hill, Assault, and of course, Deathmatch Arena. Because we all know Cobra Commander loves a good Deathmatch Arena. However, fans apparently didn't love the game quite as much. Reviews gathered by score aggregator Metacritic averaged in the range of 51 to 56, depending on the version. With that said, publisher GameMill Entertainment has announced on Steam that they will be delisting the game there on December 31st, 2024, meaning it will have been available there for just over four years. That goes for its downloadable content as well, which TrueAchievements notes "there is one DLC pack that includes a couple of skins, but the Digital Deluxe Edition of the game does include some extra cosmetics, a digital soundtrack, and a digital art book." Currently, the game is on sale for all major platforms. So if you're only just now hearing about this game for the first time and want to give it a look, it's available as of this writing on Steam for $11.21 CAD (67% off) for the vanilla edition, and $11.60 CAD (80% off) for the Digital Deluxe edition until November 21st. Hey, it's just 39 cents more. Why not treat yourself? Over in Nintendo Land, the Switch version of the game is a whopping $49.99 CAD, but the Digital Deluxe version is $11.99, down from $59.99, a cool 80% off, also until November 21st. But on Xbox, the base game is $12.49 CAD, but the Digital Deluxe version is full price at $59.99. Weird. And finally, the PlayStation version (the lowest rated of the three) is $39.99 USD for the vanilla and $49.99 USD for the Digital Deluxe, because sure, why not at this point? Thanks to SteevyMaximus for the tip! In other news, if GameSpot's 14 minutes of Green Ranger gameplay from the upcoming Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Rita's Revenge wasn't enough to whet your appetite, then IGN has a whopping eight minute preview of their own: For those who can't/won't be bothered to watch, here's a spoilered breakdown of some new information: Overall, the consensus is that it looks like Digital Eclipse will deliver on the sort of coin-op experience we all wish we'd gotten to have with these teenagers with attitude back in the day... ...that is, before Street Fighter II swooped in and turned everyone's attention towards one-on-one fighting games for the next several years. Ah, Power Rangers, you were just a bit too late. If only Robo Rita had gone back to 1991 instead of 1993. Join the Allspark today. Allspark Forums Discord Server X Facebook Page Bluesky Instagram
The latest news from the Product Does Not Convert corner of Transformersdom involves an upcoming batch of Blokees, the blind-boxed, assembly-required model kit-type representations of our favorite characters from Generation One (and actually Transformers One) and the live-action movies. The official Blokees Instagram page and Weibo page have a neat look posted that gives us an eyeful of the Galaxy Shining 01 collection, a chunky 5.5cm rendering of some familiar friends. https://www.instagram.com/p/DCBLWdyNbVT/ These include a neat little gathering of Autobots and Decepticons, some available in robot mode AND altmode versions that the others can ride (each mode is a separate kit -- Product Does Not Convert, despite what the stop-motion video implies). From this series we can expect: G1 Optimus Prime (robot mode), G1 Optimus Prime (truck mode), G1 Megatron, G1 Prowl, G1 Thundercracker (robot mode), G1 Thundercracker (jet mode), G1 Scavenger (robot mode), G1 Scavenger (excavator mode), G1 Bumblebee (robot mode, gold finish), Animated? Bumblebee (car mode, clear), G1 Ironhide (clear), and Shattered Glass Sideswipe. There are four chase figures, in Armored G1 Optimus Prime, Armored G1 Megatron, and metallic finish figures of G1 Optimus Prime and G1 Megatron. https://www.facebook.com/share/v/18t69Ubm8d/ Have you been collecting Blokees kits? Remember the thrill of watching cartoons after school and Saturday mornings, and when they went to commercials, you'd see an exciting new commercial for your favorite toy line -- or maybe a toy line you were less interested in, but hey, the commercial itself was still pretty cool? Those feel like the product of a bygone era, but Hasbro decided to bring back that feeling on Facebook with a retro-styled toy commercial for their modern-styled G.I. Joe Classified Series toy line, complete with the original theme song! But don't take my word for it; have a gander for yourself! Now, so long as we're on the subject, how about we bring back those Transformers commercials narrated by Peter Cullen and Frank Welker that gave each new character or team their own theme song? (New animated portions wouldn't be a bad thing, either.) Thanks to Steevy Maximus for bringing this to our attention! Join the Allspark today. Finally, we got Team Fortress 3 G.I. Joe may not reclaim their heyday from the 80s, but that doesn’t mean they can’t still tell great stories. While the movies struggle, and the tv shows remain M.I.A., the comics have been the strongest available outlet for these characters and their vehicles. And wouldn’t you know, let’s tie it in with Transformers, too (for like the 3rd time or so, at least in terms of making them a real shared universe.) That’s what we have with the current run of Skybound Comics, where we had a couple of different miniseries before leading up to our main comic released today bearing the title, with issue 1. I thought it was for the cool toys to play with --SPOILERS DOWN BELOW-- As far as first issues goes, it is taking a page from Transformers, with a bit of shocking death, some stage setting for the future of the franchise, and establishing some character dynamics. Though not nearly as sad and mysterious as the latter title, G.I. Joe shows how the current story of the Energon Universe is taking place, with it following the events of Transformers #12, with a piece of Cybertron now in the hands of the US Government, and the titular team is tasked to guard it from any potential threats, despite Duke, the team leader, unsure if they’re ready. Cobra Commander and Destro, now in the possession of Energon, are ready to take it by force, with LASERS. Are you not entertained? Al Gore's gonna make An Inconvenient Truth 3 out of this The team dynamic is mostly on full force, here. Baroness, usually a Cobra agent in past stories and toys, is now a Joe, and her feisty and arrogant nature shows the disruption it can cause for their future as a team (Stalker retorts back to her in Russian how when he brings her back to her parents and see what a disgrace she has become, they’ll ask him to kill her instead.) That coalesces with Duke’s decision to assign her within his group, who is still processing the events of his own miniseries, as he questions what he can do to handle this unknown Cybertronian threat, and what will happen if it falls into worse hands. Baroness: "Shut up, you stupid old pig. Or I'll slit your throat in your sleep." Stalker: "Try that and I'll not only kick your ass, I'll drag you right back to your mommy and daddy and tell them how their little princess got into this messed up life. They brought you into this world, so maybe they'll do me a favor and take you out." With a minor detour of a new Joe, Risk, kicking butt to scare off any potential MARS Industries backers (Destro’s company), we get things rolling into the big action set piece at the Colorado base (Not the first time the Centennial State has had Transformers activity). And of course, the Joes are out of their element when Cobra comes in full throttle, from hacking their computers to firing their lasers (blargh)! The art in this comic is pretty decent. A little stiff paneling with the impact of the action takes place before the motion, but it’s decent and more than serviceable. The colors are sharp, and help to liven the atmosphere where it’s taking place (purple and yellows in the nightclub, red for when the Colorado base has been Cobra-fied). Things may turn for the worse for G.I. Joe right now, but things can always turn up for our heroes, somehow. Maybe a little sacrifice or two. Human shields usually hold up sturdy against laser fire, right? Maybe Rock n Roll will make it out alive this time from all that firepower, eh? I thought Laser Surgery was for the eyes. A solid start for both teams duking it out over stolen resources. (y) -ALArts Look, I can see his parachute, he's ok. As Morphin Time draws ever closer, more and more tidbits are coming out about Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Rita's Rewind. Probably the worst kept secret since Day 1 was that yes, Tommy Oliver, the original Green Ranger, would be playable alongside his teammates in this beat 'em up adventure. Despite this, we haven't actually gotten to see the Green Ranger go in any of the game's footage. That is, until now. GameSpot managed to land an exclusive 14-minute look at the game, featuring the Master of the Dragonzord in all his green glory. We also get to hear the voices for each of the Rangers on the character select screen, and some sound like digitized versions of their respective actors, others sound close enough to pass if you don't focus on it too hard, and then there's Jason. Wow. The video shows the beginning of the story, and pretty much the whole first stage, but unfortunately, no Dinozord action. If you can't wait until the game comes out, or just want to get a feel for what's going to be on offer in the beat 'em up stages, take a gander -- er, I mean, "Behold the Viewing Window": Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Rita's Rewind will be hitting Xbox One and Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, Steam on PC, and PlayStation 4 and 5 on December 10th, 2024. With this and G.I. Joe: Wrath of Cobra coming out soon, it's just too bad we don't have some sort of Generation 1-based Transformers beat 'em up to complete a Hasbro retro trifecta this holiday season. Oh well.
