When I was a kid, I had a Batman toy. It was a BTAS figure and depicted Batman in a suit that was blue-ish grey, had a black bat symbol without the yellow oval, and a brown pouch belt. I loved it, and it solidified my preference for a pouch belted no oval'd Batman design.
In retrospect I always assumed this was a TNBA toy because he was designed to look like that in that show. Yet when I went to look for that old figure I saw that by the time they were making TNBA toys they'd gone to plastic capes and I very much remember the toy I had having a cloth cape. Plus the greys on those were flat greys while I remember the figure I had having a blueish tint and a bit of a sheen.
And then today, on my way home from work, I find this. In a vintage toy and comic store.
It's him! I found him! And he only cost me $8! In this economy? That's a steal!
Turns out my memory wasn't quite right. It wasn't a TNBA toy. It was the "retro Batman" figure from the Batman: Mask of the Phantasm line. Meant to replicate Batman's original look in the BTAS timeline that they would use as a basis for his TNBA look. Hence my confusion.
That's ok though, because at long last I've got one of the seminal Batman figures from my childhood back!
Plus he comes complete with this fun Kenner nonsense!
