Regarding the beard, from some earlier, lower-resolution pictures, I thought his mouthplate was painted white (to be a Santa beard), but I don't think that that's the case now that I can see it clearer.

That Christmas Prime is stupid in the best way and I think I have to have it. It also helps that it actually looks like a really good new Optimus mold and a licensed Volvo to boot.

Thanks for the comparison picture. I'll probably let this one pass by me. Given the choice between the two, I would probably pick the SS86 version, but I don't think it's better enough to justify the upgrade since I've already got Ironhide at home.
That's more or less what I had heard, which is part of why I never worked TOO hard at catching back up. I really liked Capaldi as an actor and enjoyed his version of the Doctor, but the stories were getting less-and-less well written.
