We really never realized back then just how much that Cybertron-Revenge of the Fallen era changed about the Thirteen, making them all Primes, removing The Fallen's Unicronian affiliation to make him a more generic traitor... in fact, that last one may have been why the Covenant book changed him...
It's a shame the name "Nexus Maximus" was so tied down to what it was, since it would have better reflected the original non-Prime nature of the Thirteen.
And what a lot of writers seem to forget is that, despite his being "a good guy who became a great leader", he still wasn't worthy of the Matrix.

The most likely reason that they don't use the "Ariel" name for Elita-1 is that they simply don't need to. Ever since Dreamwave established the "Orion Pax" name as being what Optimus was called right before he had the Matrix put into in his chest, and that putting said Matrix inside him changed...
