Owo was pretty likeable in that casino episode. The rest of the episode was jive but I was delighted to see Owo actually doing stuff and getting a sense of the character.
Off hand the most memorable Voyager episodes for me are
Tuvix
Distant Origin
Year of Hell
Living Witness
Equinox
Blink of an Eye
Critical Care
Friendship One
Latent Image
Obviouslty they aren't all social commentaries but those are the ones I remember liking a lot. Yes, even Tuvix.
Well I know as someone who watched it live I thought Far Beyond the Stars resonated with me then as much as it does now. I ask people.. I beg people.. to please tell me an episode of Discovery that hit home and made them think. Something they'll carry with them for years to come. It's *been*...
It was nowhere near subtle. But it was still a look into a different time and tackled a problem in a way that stands the test of time. Not "I saw on the news today ICE likes to hunt Mexicans, let's put that in there!"
Oh I get what you're saying - there certainly are bigots. But I think that number is overinflated due to the idea that "if you don't like it it must be because you're racist"
Maybe I am being naive. I just don't believe that because someone says "FFS can we just focus on good stories, cast...
TOS has always been somewhat "take it or leave it". One advantage TOS and TNG has over say, Disco or Picard, is that when people reflect back on what they loved, they can mentally omit the shitty episodes and only recall and cheris the episodes that truly left a mark on them.
In 2020 upon...
My only objection to that is that people by and large aren't upset about gay and black people being shoved down their throats - just the blatant disingenous nature of it being performative and fake. You can only have so many "first ever X in Y" celebrations before you realize that none of this...
It all comes down to the difference between commentary and preaching. For the most part Star Trek has always been progressive but that wasn't its identity. There were definitely instances where it was a very narrow focus on certain social issues - but they were always done from a point of view...
This is the best Star Trek we've ever gotten since BEFORE Enterprise. This nails the formula perfectly without being completely dull. I understand they're using a lot of tropes that are used in every franchise, but I loved every second of this show.
There are probably a few nitpicks I could...
It's more of me just pointing out how many people lack the utter self awareness of their hypocrisy. If your default reaction to a black actor being cast is "Why does it have to be a black person?" then there are probably some racist undertones in there and it's fine if people call it out when...
Yeah the Robert April stuff just stokes the usual racist idiots commenting about things. You know, the ones who, with no point of reference just start saying jive like "I love that he's black so we can enjoy all the white man tears" even though nobody ever said a bad thing about it because no...
More "reboot" universes just clouds the issue further and makes it less special. I understand the timeline has been strained due to it being 60 or however many years ago - but that can at least be marginally explained by time travel and things we saw as viewers alter history a bit for a show...
A lot of the earliest stuff people had a problem with on discovery was the the blatant disregard for pre established canon. And I'm not talking about casting choices or character arcs. I'm talking about the deliberate and almost malicious intent to disregard every aspect of the in universe...
The reason why it's been good so far is because the stories are cohesive and the cast has chemistry. The writing is good. The words they say matter. They aren't just speaking "at" each other with platitudes, they talk TO each other. And Uhura.. this was a great focus episode. I know this is a...
