Previously, on My Little Pony...
Prepare yourself. The Faces are coming. Such faces as you've never dreamed possible on a pony! They will delight and horrify you!
Time for a totally normal miniseries without any baggage at all attached to it!
(Yeah, we're all feeling that way right about now)
So...here we are. The beginning of what may very well be the final G5 miniseries from IDW. It's been a long road, and we've come far.
But one question remains. (Say it with me...) So. How. IS. IT?!
This issue is pretty solid! I'll even go so far to say...REALLY good! This was advertised as a crossover between G4 and G5. And, while that crossover element is pretty light right now....it is actually present. It's being set up. So, this is already a improvement on the Generations mini. Don't expect any actual characters to show up, though. This seems to be mostly about finding Cloudsdale, not actually time travelling.
Andy Price is the one on art duties this issue. And, of course, we get a plethora of his great reaction faces and details tucked into every corner of the page. It's really lively and fun to look at for the most part. But...there are some spots where it feels like he hasn't QUITE gotten the G5 characters down. To be fair though, he hasn't gotten a lot of chances to practice. But, for the most part, I'd say this book looks pretty great. It's fun having him on the art. Unfortunately, I think this is the ONLY issue where he's on the art. Someone else is taking over the art duties for issues #2 and #3. But, for this issue, it's pretty top tier stuff.
Writing wise, this is really solid, too. Everyone's in character. Things are happening. There's exciting stuff afoot. It's pretty good stuff! I do think a lot of it is getting carried by the artwork, right now. Because this issue is a lot of talking and setting things up for later. So, a lot of the actual fun is looking at the art for easter eggs that Andy Price slipped in. But, there's good stuff here, and we're finally doing a bit more world-building off of G4, like a lot of people wanted.
So, I actually recommend this issue. We'll see how I feel about the other issues once the art changes. But, for right now, this single issue is pretty fun.

We start off with some...interesting faces from Zipp and Queen Haven. I love Andy Price, but he can sometimes go off model in potentially "ugly" ways.
Notably, Queen Haven has a longbox full of comics in her closet. She's closet comic fan! This is (comic) canon, now!
Meanwhile, Cloudpuff is just in the background. Doing dog things. I appreciate Andy Price's commitment to background gags. It helps make the comic feel more lively.
It is pretty sweet that Haven wants to spend a vacation with her "Alfie". It'd actually be kind of fun so see that side of the story, too. I'd be up for it!
"You took a long bath and the whole government almost collapsed!" To be fair, the government nears collapsing when she takes a lunch break or changes outfits. This is MLP, collapsing governments is what we do!
The Queen has top-tier crown throwing skills. And Zipp does her best Charlie Brown impression.
I wouldn't be surprised if Queen Haven is just doing this to finally FORCE Zipp into her Queenly duties.
I mean to be fair, Queen Haven is already looking a little "grey". *Squints* Well, bluish-grey.
LORE! Trying to cut her own hair is how Zipp first tried out her mohawk-puff look! I'll take it!
"I made her promise that, if I helped, she wouldn't call him Alfie in front of me for a whole month" That's gonna backfire when her mom starts calling him her "Little Bittles", instead.
"And if something does happen, I think the six of us have proven that we can handle pretty much anything together" Thanks, Sunny. Maybe you want to say that "nothing could possibly go wrong" or "it'll be smooth sailing" and really jinx all of us. Maybe it'll release those Windigos from imprisonment or something. Maybe the real Grogar will attack.
Sparky will not be appearing in this story. Thank you!
Pet names are for those in the relationship ONLY. Once your own kids start calling them that, it's just no fun.
Okay, how many royal ponies are sick that you need 30 minutes just to sign get well cards for them? There's a story here that we're missing. Someone got into the baked bads again.
Pipp picking her teeth with a toothpick nonchalantly is...a look.
The Royal Family...have had history books...this entire TIME!? We could have had such LORE..at our fingertips...this entire TIME?! I do love some of these titles. "How I Did It by V. Frankenstein". "The Wrath of Gummy". "Love at Twilight" (with a mention of Flash Magnus...weird choice for Twilight to hook up with, but who am I to judge). . Even some references to other comics, like "Little Fillies", "Unicorn of Odd", and "The Return of Queen Chrysalis". It's always nice to have Andy Price's absurd attention to detail.
"Borg Grey" glitter...interesting. Star Trek exists by the time of G5.
"Who's a fluffy boy?" That tiger is going to get the cuddling of his LIFE! Although, usually, Hitch doesn't show that much interesting in animals...but I'll let it slide.
"The Case Against Beets" Okay, so Applejack eventually wrote a book. Just in time for "The Fall of the House of Apple", I guess.
"Legend of the Bat Ponies" You...TEASE!
Zipp wants to learn more about that Wonderbolts station she found out about in the movie. So, hey, going back to where it all began! Nice!
"The Prophecies of Cheese Sandwich". "The Political Downfall of Mayor Mare". "Are Zebras Real?". I want ALL of these books to be made into comics! Why?! Why are you doing this in the FINAL miniseries?!
"Cosmos" Heh, nice nod to the comics-exclusive villain.
"Unicornia"?! As in... the place from G3?! Huh...I guess they ARE going with the idea that G1 and G3 happened at the same time from the Generations mini.
The mythical pegasus homeland...Cloudsdale! Man...this is kind of what I've been wanting from G5 all this time!
"Cloudsdale isn't any more real than Coltlantis, right Zipp?" I mean you guys JUST had a adventure in a underwater city, but I guess they didn't know that was coming out before this?
"This is the spa that other spas go to when they're stressed out" I have to appreciate a good line. And this is a good line.
Apparently the symbol for a storm on the weather channel is Rainbow Dash's cutie mark. I actually kind of like that.
Okay, so...there was a learning curve with Pegasi relearning flight during thunderstorms. That's...actually more graphic than I would expect from MLP.
Oh, this MUST be a good spa! You don't get that look of utter disdain from your regular spa butlers!
"Curl Up and Dye Spa" Okay, that is a NAME!
So, it starts to snow, which is actually rather charming. Unfortunately this is summer.
"Evac Plan...Horde all TP" *Snerk* Okay, good one, fair.
And we end with Pegasi falling from the SKY! Dramatic! I like it! I wish Andy Price was on for the rest of this book. It's going to be SUCH a downgrade with the next artist.
So, yeah, right now it's just snow in summer. But, it's a lot of snow! I wonder if the weather's going to get weirder as the mini goes on?
