SYNOPSIS:

My Little Pony: A New Generation
Many years after the events of My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic, Twilight Sparkle's teachings on friendship and harmony have been replaced with paranoia and mistrust, and the three pony kinds – Earth ponies, pegasi and unicorns – live separated from one another. In the Earth pony town of Maretime Bay, Argyle Starshine tells stories of Twilight Sparkle and her friends to his young daughter Sunny Starscout, who inherits his dream of reuniting the three pony kinds.

One day, after Sunny has grown up, a lost unicorn named Izzy Moonbow wanders into Maretime Bay. The town's residents react in panic, believing that Izzy is a hostile invader. Sunny, finally given an opportunity to make friends with a unicorn, shelters Izzy in her home, and Izzy reveals to her that unicorns no longer have magic powers following their sudden disappearance. Together, they embark on an adventure and travel across Equestria on a mission to restore magic to the land.

Oh boy! It's been so long since I've done a play by play. Though if I'm going to do a PbP for a feature length movie, I'm going to need to set aside a good chunk of time. Maybe, maybe not today. But yeah!

Even if you got tired of G4 you have to admit, it is comfy seeing a thread in this format again, especially with the mibbit gif.

It's 10:30. I'm watching it.

Hey, this eOne deal amounted to something. Good move, Hasbro.

Boulder Media, and there's a tennis ball.

Familiar faces? I wasn't expecting you all. I guess Hasbro couldn't just let them go. This art style looks weird.

Rarity what?

Ah so that stiff dialog was intentional. New characters! I immediately love them. They are just so cute.

Sticky hooves. Oh no! It really doesn't fit when so much more effort was put into getting their limbs right this gen.

This is technically post apocalyptic. G4 happened but something went wrong and tore their world apart, and they don't even know it happened.

Modern looking city. As long as it's consistent, it could work.

This company's projects are as bad as the ACME Corporation.

Sunny is way more of a Minty than I expected.

IZZY!

Izzy clearly does not keep up with current events.

HOW would a horse come out with her hooves up?

I'm not taking as many notes as I expected because I'm mostly just watching it. I knew it was going to be an animated movie, but this is just straight up an animated movie. Hasbro almost had me forgetting that stuff like this existed.

Depooty.

Everyone in this movie is incompetent.

The tennis ball!

Villain song, complete with green smoke. You know, I'm glad they're making it obvious instead of going for a last minute twist villain like animated movies tend to love for some reason.

Aww, goodbye tennis ball.

And we have our plot devices.

Okay plans always go wrong in My Little Pony but even by that standard this heist is spectacular. It could not be going worse.

Is no one going to question how Izzy did that?

Aw, balloon pony is still flying. This movie's comedic timing is decent.

Izzy's song. This movie's music isn't doing much for me, but, you know, good luck to me on that.

Unicorns are superstitious. I didn't expect that but I feel like I should have.

Completely mechanical DDR. Interesting.

Yeah of course it can't be that easy.

Oh no Biff has taken over.

Oh come on. Izzy is holding on to the ledge with literally nothing.

These plot devices really do not want to work.

Huh? Complete failure and then the epiphany just immediately happens anyway? There is no in-between.

Sunny's getting M.A. Larson'd!

That was okay. It was consistently pretty good and well paced until the very last few minutes. It seems like they realized they were running out of minutes and didn't want to cut anything so they skipped straight to the resolution.

As an introduction to a new gen it was good. This can work.

It's kinda lopsided with five ponies. The original six worked with two reps each but then Twilight changed, they just added Starlight too late.

A four pony team would have worked with the Alicorn and one rep each but there's an extra pegasus. Zipp could have been the peripheral pegasus instead of Pipp, really.

Sooo Sunny is a smartie and an alicorn so Twilight.

Izzy is a unicorn Pinkie Pie.

Pipp is a new version of Rarity.

Hitch is their bull, I mean, the hardworking Applejack type. Plus he has Fluttershy's animal friend making ability, which I LOVE. Also the pornstache. And the pin up calendar.

Movie is ok but not much myth building yet. The giant horse bot isn't as big as a mystical threat. Can we never see Sprout again, please?

I feel like they really should have included something concrete for the Earth Ponies. A visible change should have happened when the artifact was completed, darn it.

But what? It's modern now so no plants growing where they walk. Speed would be great unless the Pegasus have it again. Muscles is not ladylike looking.

This is G5, right? I hope there's a satisfying answer as to how Twilight's empire amounted to nothing.

So I feel like there is enough evidence that this a sequel many, many generations removed from FIM.....so putting Twilight in charge was an awful idea I guess.

Maybe it was only one generation and Twilight screwed it up that badly.

To repeat from the general G5 thread, I think this is an alternate world, where it's just Convenient Coincidence that Sunny had dolls of the Mane 6. Too much stuff is different, there'd need to be a disaster of proportions undreamed up by the CMC to leave G4 Equestria in this shape. It's like how Barry Allen grew up reading about the fictional (to him) Jay Garrick version of the Flash, and was inspired by him, only to meet him later in a multiversal crossover.

my current personal headcannon, is that Zephyr Heights is Canterlot; seeing as we had that 'Twilight Room' that Zip Showed. Whatever cuased the Pegasus to lose their magic, means Cloudsdale would have to be abandoned. So the Pegasi eventually settle into the ruins of Canterlot as the next highest elevation they can reach.

That makes sense. The castle in particular looks very Canterlot.

I give it three days. People are in full Pepe Silvia mode trying to work out how all the maps fit together and I am convinced that someone is going to figure it out.

I'm going to assume that unicorn magic and Pegasus flight were active when the three types were friends.

So how long ago was that? I feels like the parents could have experienced the magic while they were young. Like Sunny's dad was telling her about them being being friends from experience?

Maybe just 50 years ago before the artifact broke?

I do recognize that Hasbro might later reveal that this is indeed the future of G4, but it'll make as much sense as the first few episodes of RiD15 being the future of TF:prime...not much, and require a lot of "Um, ignore all those details and impossible timelines, it just works, okay?" from the show.

Leaving us with a bunch of questions to figure out is a great way to start a new gen.

I don't see the gap as being too big. It would require an incredible disaster to split the world apart like this, but we saw exactly that almost happen at the end of G4. It could happen again.

Oh, AU where the villains won in the series finale, could work really well.

One problem with that is we would have to explain why the windigoes disappeared after winning. If this is the same timeline, we could assume the windigoes were defeated forever in the G4 finale and a subsequent disaster happened without them. If this is an alternate timeline where the villains won, they need to defeat the windigoes somehow.

You know I've been thinking about something. How the three pony cities had different levels of technology.

Zephyr Heights was pretty much how our world is today.

Maretime Bay is either late 80's or early 90's

Then Bridlewood is kinda what I'd expect to be close to Ponyville. It kinda has tech, but it's almost steam punk like. Given the hamster wheel dance game.

I can't figure out why Zephyr Heights is the one that went most modern, but I kinda feel/wonder if Bridlewood is the way it is, because before magic vanished, the unicorns mostly used it, so they didn't have a reason to really advance their tech.

Really has a wrench thrown into the theory when it feels like the earth ponies would be the ones to advance tech the farthest, given they can't fly or use magic, but that's not what happened.

It looks like the pegasi were driven by their social media lifestyle to develop communications tech to a higher level, plus the whole "Need for the royals to fake it" thing driving more tech.

But yeah, the unicorns probably relied too much on magic that by the time magic faded, they had no real tech base to build up from. And more recently, no motivation to even try. (If not for Sunny, Bridlewood's population might have all died out in a generation.)
