It says one week, but it's actually less, now.

Meanwhile, I'm trying to figure out how to download my comics to avoid this happening to what I already purchased, but I haven't found anything helpful towards that end at all.

Is it just using the Kindle app on my desktop and clicking the title to read it? Or is there something more I need to do here?

That's what I did yesterday. As for my small batch of comics,, as far as I can tell they're gone. Amazon says I don't have any. Which makes me glad I never went all in with digital comics.

Just clicking the title to be able to read them?

As for me, it's largely been a way to keep up with Sonic monthly while buying the trades physically, and was the only way I could keep up with IDW Transformers affordably, among others (I usually wait for sales).

Damn, I wish I wasn't so far behind on stuff like TMNT and Power Rangers now, though... >_<

I downloaded the regular books. Amazon says I don't have any comics to download.

So, IDK if this actually interests anyone, but if you want to preserve and de-DRM your books...

Seems to work so far, though the format -- at least for pdf when I tried it -- kinda sucks.

But at least it's mine. Hopefully I can find something better or more manageable later.

If you have Kindle for PC, there's a set of dots to the right of the book title, click those and you'll get a menu that includes the option to download. Then, if you have Calibre and the plug-in mentioned in the Reddit post you linked to, you can then add the books to the Calibre library and convert to your preferred format (I prefer zip so I can then convert to cbz, and then I use an online cbz-to-pdf converter if I want to have them as a pdf, as sometimes converting to pdf directly doesn't work as well as I'd like).

Did that still work as of your writing that? Wednesday was supposed to be the cutoff.

Incidentally, I didn't see the download option when I did that in the latest Kindle I got last week, so I got the older one they showed.

But as for me finishing downloading everything...

I just checked (7:11 am, Pacific Time) and I was still able to download the same book I used in the screenshot AND it still downloaded in the azw format that works with Calibre, and I do believe my KfPC app is up to date, so...? I also don't have an actual Kindle device connected to the PC app, so I don't use the download to transfer to device, which I've been seeing is what they're actually disabling (E-Link, I think it's called?), or direct downloading from the Amazon/Kindle website. I hope any of this helps somebody to save copies of their books/comics!

I did a test download on my phone. Sooo, is this a PC only thing?

From the Googling I've done since seeing this thread, everything I've seen regarding "no more downloading" has been about the download to your computer to then upload it to your Kindle device, you can now only download the books directly to your Kindle. Which screws anyone with a Kindle that's old enough to not be able to download and has to have books loaded via computer. I can download in my Kindle apps on my iPhone and iPad, and the Kindle for PC app. I don't know if I'm unaffected with the KfPC since I don't have an actual Kindle to connect and upload to, or if there's a different app for loading books onto Kindles/however else you (used to be able to) load your Kindle via PC USB cable. I could be wrong and the "change" just hasn't been rolled out for the KfPC yet.

TL;DR: downloading books directly on your Kindle/Kindle app on non-Kindle devices (iPhones, Androids) seems to be unaffected, and Kindle for PC app (at least for Windows) seems to be (as of 30 minutes prior to this post) unaffected also. Beyond that, I got nothin'...

I just re-read some of the articles regarding this situation (and I think it's been possibly blown out of proportion like a game of telephone due to misunderstanding/miscommunication/Amazon just being a satchel of Richards and being vague about what's going on). It seems to only be in regards to downloading directly from the Amazon/Kindle website for transfer to your Kindle via USB transfer. If you have the Kindle app on your computer, it seems it's regarded as a "Kindle device", hence why downloading (as of writing this post) still works using Kindle for PC, and the book can still be imported into Calibre and converted to another format (I confirmed it before getting this far in writing the post). So if you have the app on your computer you can still download them through it. I'd recommend doing it and convert them if you want, and I've also seen some people suggesting after you download the Kindle versions to move them to a different file location in case of Amazon potentially messing with your books that are already downloaded (don't know if they *can* do that, but it wouldn't surprise me). If your library is large, like LBD "Nytetrayn"'s (or bigger, I haven't really checked how large mine is), maybe look into getting an external hard drive for storage.
