But can they streamline it without adding the extra complexity this one does such a good job avoiding?
All he needs is a couple more joints to make the backpack less rectangular. The way they accomplish so much with so few steps is legitimately more impressive to me than Mp44’s plastic origami.

okay, maybe he could use a more secure grip on his gun.

My main wish is that at some point we get a properly sized Matrix. It's been way too small for most the figures that are supposed to be using it.

So I found my MMC Prime and a few more at my parents house while the rest of the family ran around. Still missing a few I'd like to get in here, but overall, I'd say this is a pretty good representation of Primes for the last 20 some odd years.

If we did get, it would likely appear silly in terms of space used for storage of it with the robot, so its likely the old original MP OP, his Matrix is likely what would scale as we saw it in the 86 movie with the current Generations figures

Sorta! Funny enough MP01's Matrix has trouble fitting in the hands of Studio Series Optimus because his big articulated finger slab gets in the way of a proper grip! Since his fingers lack the natural "curl" something like Alternators or modern MP cars have, it's not as easy to fake it either. So even a Matrix that size is still a bit too small!

Basically, they need to release a second Matrix with some of these guys. One that doesn't fit inside guys' chests.

Because the ones we're getting are more or less properly sized.

Yeah, Prime's fingers ain't fitting in those holes. That thing changes size.

Even in the smaller Hot Rod's hands:

And remember -- he grows BIGGER to become Rodimus Prime.

Everyone's always like "Ultra Magnus/Galvatron couldn't open it because he didn't use the finger holes!"

But nah. Their fingers weren't fitting in those holes. That thing just grows big when it needs to.

Oh, wait...

Eh... maybe?

I dunno, still don't think they'd fit here, even if that thing got way bigger. Optimus was palming it above, and the larger Ultra Magnus probably couldn't do that with it here.

Anyway, this is all to say that I think the ones that store in their chests are properly sized -- for that. But not for being opened. You need a separate one for that, if you want to maintain any sort of semblance of screen accuracy.

Why did Primus even design it with finger holes when his creations are of widely differing size and some don’t have a full set of fingers to begin with, if they have fingers at all?

We even got Shockwave as a Matrix candidate at one point.

I assume if the thing would open for him at all, his claws could still pull the halves apart. It’d be like opening a cabinet with a pair of kitchen tongs but it’s feasible.

Imagine if the Matrix's design had stayed the way it was in Ron Friedman's original first draft of TFTM, as a tiny glowing apparition/hologram in the shape of Optimus's body. Then the handle size would have never been an issue since there wouldn't be any handles at all.
