Please do NOT turn this into a religion thread. I can see the grist for it, but please say with me.

So the Redhats would have you believe that what the Democrats want is an open border. Just who cares who comes in. Whoever wants to live in America can come. People who pay attention know that no American politician of any standing actually advocates for that. Politics are such as this.

The Redhats will tell you both of the following:
1) America belongs to Americans. Its riches are our birthright and it is important to hold standards for who can become an American.
2) The Founding Fathers knew exactly how this country should be and straying from their wisdom has been the cause of very much, maybe the majority, maybe virtually all of our problems.

In the Preamble to the Declaration of Independence, no less than Thomas Jefferson wrote "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness". Initially, the Founding Fathers decided that a pledge of allegiance to the United States would make a man a citizen. In 1790 they added a 2 year waiting period and in 1795 they extended that to 5. But the Constitution left immigration in the hands of the states, giving the federal government no authority over who could enter and how many. In 1891, after all the Founding Fathers were dead, the federal government finally took the power to control immigration.

If you believe the Founding Fathers knew best, you believe federal government should not be involved in immigration. AND you also believe that the creator of Guatamalans endowed them with certain inalienable rights. Do you have a responsibility, as far as it is in your power, to help see to it that they get to enjoy those rights?

I am wondering a lot lately what exactly would happen if the Redhats' worst fear, a truly open border, became a reality. Do you know who couldn't steal your job if undocumented workers didn't have to get paid under the table?

A truly open border will not happen. It simply can't in this political day and age.
What immigration truly needs is a full on overhaul complete with it's own PR team to clear the air of most of the garbage BS that gets pushed by the racists and the businesses that rely on cheap, immigrant labor.

Throttling immigration serves a purpose to specific businesses and people with money. Until we remove the muck they've tossed out to muddy the waters, immigration will never be anything other than an issue to be dealt with through half promises and bullshit every 4 years.

It's an odd one. I don't even think the Founding Fathers would really agree with each other on it. Granted, they didn't agree on much at all with each other when it comes right down to it, outside of a few specific issues and most of those specific issues most modern American would disagree with. Several of the Founding Fathers weren't even born in the US, though, so I think they'd be a bit more open to 'open borders' overall than current politicians who find 'the other' a good way to maintain power.

And I don't think we should. At the very least we should know who comes in. But the Redhat position is logically untenable.
