Well he was 95, and CO2 easily kills people when they are already asleep.
CO, not CO2. It's much more insidious. Your body KNOWS when it has too much CO2, but it sees carbon monoxide as oxygen, for all intents and purposes. You start suffering from the symptoms of hypoxia, which, especially in their early stages, can mimic other, less serious things. Same thing killed both of Weird Al's parents at the same time as well.
