It can't be "underrated" if it's one of the most popular.
Underrated anime would be things like Tekkaman Blade, the Giant Robo OVA, Revolutionary Girl Utena, the 2003 version of Astro Boy, etc.
Shows that haven't been watched by as many people as the ones that are most popular, but are very highly regarded by those who have seen them.

Definitely recommend Giant Robo (also Johnny Sokko and his Flying Robot, but that isn't anime) and They Were Eleven. Would also recommend Patlabor (TV series and follow-up series, though the original OVAs and movies aren't bad, just a different continuity) and Planetes.
I recomend Tekkaman Blade, the 90s verison, the show puts the main character through the ringer to save the world he has to square off against his own family
Fang of the Sun Dougram - a space colony (whose almost sole purpose is basically to provide food for Earth) rebels because they have no say in the government. The rebellion movement is led by a history professor who knows all about these sorts of movements, and the MC is the son of one of Earth's major(rich) politicians who runs away to join with some local friends in one of the rebel cells, piloting a prototype mech.
A lot of the designs eventually were turned into Battletech designs and the combat obviously formed a large part of their inspiration. It also has the most realistic politics I've seen in any anime, and the eventual main villian is a "love to hate" villain. It also does not end how you'd expect for one of these sorts of shows.
Starship Operators - A space empire is going around essentially conquering neighboring systems. A bunch of cadets are out on a training cruise when their home system is taken, and they refuse to surrender and mutiny against the instructors. They begin a one-ship mission to fight back, funded by selling the rights to the video coverage of their fights and journey to a intersteller TV network who turns it into a reality show.
This is pretty much the most realistic depiction of space combat I've seen in anime, actually taking advantage of light-speed delays, inertia, and how you would actually detect and fight other ships in space, rather than being a WW2 Battleship or Fighter-plane-in-space style of fighting. It also doesn't end how you'd expect.

Funny enough I'm trying fo have a panel at an upcoming convention (It sounds like I'll hear back if I'm approved tomorrow. Maybe) Where my roommate and I talk about anime that you could consider underrated, or forgotten about by today's average watcher.

Okay so, can we only do two youtube links at a time? I tried to post this one my last post and the URL kept getting all scrambled and you couldn't go to it.
There we go. So apparently you just can NOT link the first youtube video of this I found on these boards. No matter what I try it scrambles the thing when actually posting and trying to copy paste takes you to a page that says it doesn't exist anymore, despite the fact I can still find it on youtube via search and watch it. I'm also pretty sure I linked three youtube videos in a post before... so let's try it out!
Next spotlight I'm going to put on the J9 trilogy. Discotek put them out on SD BLu-Ray not too long ago, but then had to pull them not long after. I got all three series before that happened, so I don't know how hard it is to find now. The first is really the best, but the other two deserve mention as they follow along from each other with similar characters, even if the scenarios differ.
Galactic Cyclone Bryger - Your basic Shadowrun team in space(without a decker), and their ride also turns into a giant robot. Lots of basic heist-style episodes, in a Robin Hood fashion(they charge a lot, but often do good), before eventually stumbling onto a conspiracy to blow up Jupiter and turn it into a bunch of habitable planets for humanity to spread onto. They both succeed and fail at that, which leads into...
Galactic Gale Baxinger - 900 years after Bryger, humanity has spread across the "Planet Oceans" now filling the inner solar system, and a group inspired by the legends of Bryger forms their own mercenary force to make a difference in the current world, which resembles Imperial Japan around the time of the Americans making contact. They also have 5 motorcycles that grown and combine into a giant robot. I didn't dig this one quite as much, but the historical parrallels are HEAVY if that's your thing. It also sets the stage for...
Galactic Whirlwind Sasuraiger - Basically it's Around The World in 80 Days, but set among the Planet Oceans, taking place a while after Baxinger, and using a space train that also conveniently turns into a giant robot. It's back to a team of rogues, who keeps getting caught in messes on each planet as the mob boss they have a bet against keeps trying to interfere, or his underlings do. Really enjoyed the characters here more than Baxinger, to be honest - J9 style really works best with a bunch of rogues IMO.

Japan tends to schedule their productions in seasons referred to by the fandom in the west as "cours". 13 weeks = 1/4 year = 1 cour. That's why you often see episodes near some multiple of that, like 13, 26, 39(least common) or 52, if they're not some forever-running series. They don't do reruns like US TV, so it runs for however many weeks then is replaced by something else. Anime has gotten more expensive to make compared to back in the day, so a lot of studios unless they're working with an existing franchise reduce their gamble on something new to the minimum and go with 1 cour, on the theory that they can produce a second season later if its a hit.
They do, but some don't take off as well as those based upon manga or light novels, in Japan, companies are seeing built in fan bases and taking chances upon series, some are far more sucessful than others but at least they try and also actually respect what they are adapting, unlike some western writers, who get given access to IPs and instead of respecting, they pretty much go and dis upon the original because they believe they can write better than the creator of said work can, when they are nothing more than leaches hanging onto someone else's work!

Anyway, that was the intro to (the TV series version of) Oh My Goddess! A heartwarming (if occasionally sappy) tale of a student whose wish gives him a live-in minor goddess of the Norse pantheon. Then her siblings show up, and things go wacky.
Ah I've heard of that show. I also know it had a spin off type thing called: "The Mini adventures of Ah My Goddess"Neither one worked! Wow. That's just odd....

For those who come to my anime streams, I'm about to show an OVA that could be underrated, or just average.
Melty Lancer. Stream is starting a a couple of minutes in fact. I'll let you know if it's worth it.
EDIT: It's not terrible, but not very memorable. Heck it's out of print but the two DVDs are going for like 5 or 6 bucks each.
