So, I have recently been watching a lot of anime with my son, Haywire3, including season 1 of Pokemon, 2004 Tetsujin 28, 80s Shin Tetsujin 28, 60s Gigantor, and took a sidestep for an episode of Megas XLR which led to hunting down Star Blazers: Quest for Iscandar, all of which he has really loved. He's also seen Speed Racer, Porco Rosso, My Neighbor Totoro, and Laputa.
He IS 5-1/2, and a little sensitive about people dying (sort of), so we haven't tried Macross/Robotech or some of the other Ghibli films, and it will be quite some time before I let him watch City Hunter, Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, Space Adventure Cobra or similar shows, but I'm kind of wondering what other classic anime I can introduce him to? Thinking about Astro Boy, which I've never seen myself, and Patlabor (though I hate the dub), mayyyybe Irresponsible Captain Tylor (it's kind of borderline). Anyone have any suggestions?

Voltron, if you go with the dub, which cuts out much of the death and presents the monsters as robots, thou the vehicle series has the monsters that are truly machines, if you choose to watch the 80s series, you could go for Samuari Pizza Cats as well

I just finished my rewatch of Dairugger XV, AKA Vehicle Voltron, while most of the cast is fairly static in terms of personalties and not really learning much, but the series has a strong message about war, its consquences and the reprocussions of it, as well as what happens to nature if one is not careful, the most fleshed out character, would be on the loosing side, as he is presented as the one who would rather avoid confict, yet many of those under his command, would rather fight than talk things out and make peace, even openningly defying his command and getting away with it as they had the backing of those above him, in short at times, he was commander in name only!

Shows I finished:
A Sign of Affection: Super cute and sweet romance. It did end up going the predictable route with the supporting chars, but it was still a feel good show.

Bravern: I def need to rewatch this sometime. The twists threw me for a loop, but overall very satisfied with this show.

Mr. Villain's Day Off: Slice of life show on a tokusatsu villain trying to enjoy his days off. Quite cute and I want more.

Fluffy Paradise: The general premise of isekai'ing into a fantasy world of creatures is fun, but the MC is def OP and some things feel too easy. More serious than I thought it'd be.

I'm also caught up to Detective Conan. Well, minus a huge chunk of eps in the middle that I couldn't find anywhere. I'll admit that I didn't always pay full attention to the filler eps (which is 90% of the show).

A few months ago, I started rewatching Naruto in the background. I liked it and found a lot of it meaningful to me 20 years ago or so. I'm watching on Netflix, so the American dub that did change some stuff around, but I have been enjoying it. The other day I got to where Sasuke left and finished that arc and I thought we were going to jump right into Shippuden, but I'd forgotten that there were a couple seasons of filler. I kinda glanced through the episode guide and I'm not sure there is anything I really want to watch for 2 seasons. Is that what really happened? I watched "The Lost Tower" yesterday. Netflix doesn't have Shippuden and doesn't have "The Last". I can't watch a DVD on my iPad the way I've been watching Netflix.

Am I wrong and I should go ahead with the filler seasons? I don't really remember the show taking a dive in quality, but I'm just sitting here with no memory whatsoever of anything that came between here and Shippuden.

I can't recall much of Naruto, thou I seen much of it, once, it just never really stuck with me and Shippuden, is a similar case, it felt like the story was going totally off track at that point and the power scale creep, just suddenly exploded as it lost its way, as it seemed like Shippuden was meant to be about finding Sasuke and trying to convice him to come back, but then a lot of other stuff got in the way and by the time we get our final showdown between Naurto & Sasuke, it was stupidly over the top and lacked any real meaning as by that point Sasuke had achived his goals and the world was saved! The final villian switched about three times over the course of the story, like the creator had no actual plan for his story, thou I would also argue similar with Bleach, thou after Aizn's defeat, I stopped watching and felt that the story should of ended after that point instead of carrying on, but that merely my view, thou with Naruto, I kind of question the point of the time skip between the two series as the only real change for the lead was Naruto physically growing up, yet, he had nothing new for his fighting style, where's everyone else in the cast did have a change or had gained something!

I'd say some of the Naruto filler can be harmless fun. Some of it's even pretty good. But, if you just want to go ahead and get back into the main story, there are lists that point out what's just filler versus what you need to watch to match up to the manga.

But, yeah, this anime was made back in the day when companies felt that these big shonen shows HAD to continuously run without stopping, or else they'd lose their audience. So, we ended up with filler so they wouldn't completely overtake the manga. Nowadays, we just get shorter seasons every few years. Not gonna lie, I kind of miss those early-to-mid 2000's days. With filler as far as the eye can see. *SIGH*...it's funny what you get nostalgic for.

But, it does result in the show being almost half filler. If Naruto got the Dragon Ball Z Kai treatment, all of Naruto and Shippuden combined might end up only being around 400 episodes, instead of the 700 we actually got.
