Disappointing Yellowing Mystery

What has changed to cause this level of yellowing? Hasbro said they're confused by it as conditions haven't changed with them. Same plastic as always. What kind of environmental factors are at play here? Has there been any common thread identified?
wasn't something to do with not being able to do in person factory inspections thanks to covid?

also, doesn't Soundwave use a lot of paint?

Hasbro said their quality control suffered due to the pandemic, some think heat is the problem, mine seemed fine until a unusual heatwave hit Britain last summer.

SG Soundwave is whiter then then RNC, anything not white is painted. which still leave him about 80% white.

Excikaiser used a plastic whitening gel to de-yellow a couple figures, but within a month they've started to yellow again.

Tungg's been having miserable luck with this issue, reporting seven different figures (including a Power Rangers Dino Fury toy) with absolutely horrendous yellowing, despite living in a very dry area and keeping these things in temps below 75° F:

The fact that this issue still hasn't been solved in time for Star Saber is worrying.

You can add Kingdom/Legacy Blaster to this list.
Unfortunately it seems this isn't confined to Transformers products, it's happened to Star Wars and Power Ranger figures too.

If my Luke, Han, and George Lucas stormtroopers (or ANY stormtroopers) escape yellowing I will be very surprised. I've seen many yellowed vintage ones, plus almost all vintage vehicles. I have one clone trooper helmet from the first run, it seems fine so far. What modern Star Wars are having the issue?

Luckily I have a botbots Snuggle Puggle. Any yellow can be blamed on him thinking it was snow. He has no idea why everyone's so mad...

It's clearly a different type of plastic used for most Star Wars toys. The original Storm Troopers and Tatooine Luke yellowed pretty badly (they also leached plasticizers so they tend to be sticky). There was one Storm Trooper with a removable helmet that came out a few years ago whose helmet yellowed very quickly (so much so Hasbro rereleased him with a different helmet). My original BMF also yellowed very badly but I did have it displayed right in front of a window so I can't really blame the plastic... the bottom of the ship stayed normal. Otherwise, I have ships going all the way back to the seventies on display and even my original white TIE fighter and Rebel Transport only have the very faintest of yellowing. Certainly all the vehicles I've collected since the nineties are still clean.

There's a potential solution nobody tried, it's keep your toys in sunlight for a few hours, I've done it with Earthrise Megatron and Buzzworthy Dinobot and seen a little improvement.

It'd be wild to go back in time and tell our younger selves that in the future, to fight yellowing, you have to put your Transformers IN sunlight.

It wouldn't be SO bad to have to rebuy a few pieces (indeed it's nice to have the option at all with package refreshes and such) if the prices hadn't jumped up so damn much in such a short time (and if they were available at the same price point they used to be, SOUNDWAVE).

Keeping things out of the sunlight was always just a guess. It sounded good.

I just hope that Hasbro have gotten over that confusion by this point and have figured out their plastic supply situation. The pandemic was whatever it was in terms of factory presence, but they've had a good long while now of being able to conduct proper quality control checks and review all of this and make decisions about changing this stuff out.

I wonder if the non-yellowed plastic will then start yellowing because of the sun exposure just to mess with us
Well, that's interesting news! Plastic is weird, man.

It works! Netflix Soundwave and Megatrons, G2 Megatron, Kingdoms Grimlock, Artfire and Cyclonus have shown improvements, not all the way but they aren't glowing.

I need to try it with my Soundwave. He was hit hard by the yellowing.

You know, it would be fun to see some future media acknowledge yellowing in some sort of easter-egg type deal. Like, it's a condition that affects some Cybertronians, kind of like cosmic rust but far less severe.

I think I'm going to try this with my Netflix Soundwave. He's super yellowed, and I already have the new Leader Class multipack preordered as a replacement so there's no real potential loss if something goes horribly wrong (I've been spending so much time thinking about whether or not I COULD place Soundwave in the sun that I didn't stop to consider if I SHOULD!)

None of mine are gold just bright grey and green and it's reversed them to duller colours. I'm trying it with Cyberverse deluxes now, Soundwave, Arcee and Thunderhowl are the worst, I'm not sure about Grimlock though. d.
