I finally got around to watching Gundam Seed Freedom after doing some refreshing (and get used to the new voice cast) with the original series.
I'm glad it was a film. One of the biggest issues with Seed and Destiny was the meandering pacing and filler, and I could just SEE where this could have been a 50-odd episode series and I'd be driven to madness with emo Kira and brainwashed Lacus for dozens of episodes. I've said before, seeing Destiny as a movie trilogy makes it FAR more palatable.
I think the overall story is stronger, with a meaningful character focus. I think keeping Kira and Lacus as the anchors help move the story along, but I think they did a solid job with the supporting cast. Story wise? Without that strong character driven anchor...it has a definite sense of retreading general story beats from the prior series (Intentional or bad writing? You decide!), and I think the abrupt appearance of "new type sense" and some of the new tech just feel like lazy introductions. That said, I think the left over Seed Destiny characters are well served, and I've actually been a fan of the mecha designs of this flavor of the franchise.
I was a bit surprised by the sense of nostalgia it gave me, though. Similar crafted scenes and music callbacks really sell it as a nostalgia piece. For me, SEED was the last Gundam series I watched while the brand was still a meaningful thing in the US, and seeing new content in that universe was kind of nice.
Now to see how GQuuux fares now that it has started to stream on Amazon Prime. ...
