I would like to retain the fictional idea of the Gobots being cyborgs to differentiate them from Transformers, but I do like the idea of competing factions added to the Transformers mythos.
Agreed. I always appreciate when writers remember that the Gobots aren't actually sentient robots, but humanoid brains in mech suits.

The original gobot/machinerobo toys are such great little units of toys. Small. Solid. Lots of unique but not over complicated alt-modes and transformation schemes.

I really wish we could get reissues of them.

-ZacWilliam, Bandai doesn't seem interested in that sadly.

Exactly this. The early DX figures get a lot of flak for being...different...but the small figures were generally pretty legit. Machine Robo Rescue revisited some of the classic designs (and had some pretty awesome unproduced designs), but once it morphed into Mugenbine and then became relegated to candy toys, it seemed like Bandai had given up on the brand. The Action Toys figures being licensed through the Revenge of Cronos anime seemed to reinforce this idea. But then, Bandai came out with the wackiness that is Unitroborn, and it just makes me wonder what their concept of the brand truly is?

Meanwhile, lines like Agatsuma's Diarobo and Sonokong's Hello Carbot Mini/Micro, and even Transformers Legend/Legion/Core class have kind of been spiritual successors to the original Machine Robo in my mind, but I would LOVE to see some kind of revival or revisit to the small-scale figures. Hasbro is working cooperatively with Mattel and Lego now, I feel like they could be the ones to work a deal with Bandai. (Although that deal with Mattel might preclude that)

I just want the combiners. Apparently they're as good as it's going to get.

Indeed, that's why I veered away from suggesting that Gobotron could be a lost Cybertronian colony or something, because that wouldn't really work.

Actually it might could, with the right lore. We know in G1 at least they can cyberterraform with things like the key to Vector Sigma. Gobotron as I recall it is a world that got cyberterraformed in their own fiction. So maybe their world got claimed and they became cyborgs to survive.

Hmm, you know, perhaps GoBotron could have started off as a world that the Quintessons attempted to colonize during their rule of Cybertron, with the planet's organic natives being experimented on and turned into robotic cyborgs in light of the Quints' initial successes with manufacturing fully robotic lifeforms back on Cybertron. Then, while the Cybertronians started their rebellion against the Quints on Cybertron, so too would the GoBots on GoBotron, adopting the art of transformation for stealth and trickery that helped them drive the Quints off of GoBotron back to Cybertron, where they were ultimately beaten for good by the Cybertronians and driven all the way back to Quintessa.

In subtle reference to the GoBots toyline and cartoon preceding the Transformers, the GoBots in this scenario would develop transformation before the Cybertronians would, as the Cybertronians wouldn't adopt it until the first Autobot/Decepticon war after the Quints were removed from Cybertron. And both would develop it completely independent from each other, as a form of parallel evolution between the two races.

With this scenario in mind, how do you fit in Renegades and Guardians?
Renegades could kick off the rebellion, or, they could be unhappy with the new status quo after the rebellion.

After kicking the Quints off GoBotron, the GoBots decided they need to protect their planet and form a security and peacekeeping force called the Guardians. At the head of this force are three elected statesmen: Zeemon, Leader-1, and Cy-Kill (or, perhaps he could have a different less-evil-sounding name in this version, before renaming himself "Cy-Kill" later). Then, the Renegades form as a group of malcontents not satisfied with this era of peace and wanting to take over, with Cy-Kill eventually betraying the other two statesmen and becoming leader of the Renegades, a la the events of "Et tu, Cy-Kill?"

I always liked "Moto-Cross" as a pre-Renegade name for CyKill...

I would also keep the Master Renegade as the origin of the Renegade faction; perhaps he and the Last Engineer could have been early Quintesson experiments that failed and were discarded, only to survive and perhaps lead the Gobots rebellion? Then the Master Renegade could become dissatisfied and form the Renegades (perhaps initially to pursue and eradicate the Quints?), disappears and leaves a power vacuum that CyKill fills when he is swayed to join the Renegades.

I like that.

I was mostly trying to see if I could stick as close to the original cartoon timeline as possible, getting the Quints off GoBotron before the first Renegade rebellion was instigated by the master.

He and the Last Engineer could have been among the few natives who weren't turned into full GoBots by the Quints because the Quints needed to keep some of the original GoBeing templates intact just in case something went wrong and they'd need to start over from scratch. Both of them could have been among of several engineers whom the Quints forced into being the primary maintenance crew for the original cyborg GoBots. After the Quints left, the engineers would continue to help maintain the mechanical functions of the early GoBots until the Modifier technology was upgraded from simple transformation-giving to also providing maintenance and repair work, making the engineers slowly superfluous and gradually dying out. The one who would become the Master Renegade would view the Guardian-controlled peace as the cause of this stagnation that led to his fellow engineers dying out, and would launch the first Renegade rebellion, aiming to take over GoBotron for himself. Though he caused an asteroid to crash into the planet, his rebellion would get quashed with help from the Last Engineer, and the master would flee into space, stealing a ship intended for the Last Engineer in the process. Though the master failed, the damage was done. The new Renegade faction would continue to exist and wage war against the Guardians, while the Last Engineer would go into suspended animation and fade into myth and legend.

For years I held on to 'Psy-Chill', to later become Psych-ill upon his defection of whatever, then to Cy-kill on his final descent.

And screw ss86 junkion body for Cy-Kill. While I think the mold is too big in robot mode for a standard Transformers display, it's certainly too big for Cy-Kill.

I can't suggest an alternative mold for Cy-Kill, but do think that Junkion mold would make for a good Crossover/Colab Death's Head I (v.1).

Remold of Iguanus. It might not be 1:1 its close enough to be him and be explained as his "transformers universe" body, just like others don't look exactly like their normal bodies, and its not huge.

I feel like Crashbar would make a decent Transformer body for CyKill at the deluxe scale. It's not a 1:1 on transformation, but the body looks roughly analogous, with the 3 headlight details standing in for CyKill's yellow rectangles. Give him a new head with the 5-o'clock shadow, and maybe a couple of wheel accessories, and I think it would work.800px-Legacy-toy_Crashbar.jpg307px-Cykillgobots.jpg

Instead, we're getting Road Pig from that mold.

That's a good point, but since we got 3 remolds from Scraphook (Tow Line, Axlegrease, and the upcoming Lockdown), I don't know that that necessarily prevents a second remold; if anything, maybe the mold layout makes the Junkions easier to modify?

If any of the bike parts on Road Pig are remolded, I might amend my suggestion to make a potential CyKill from that version instead.
