Israeli-Palestinian Conflict

Wasn't sure if I should put this in a China thread or not, but I'm sure we'll need this one eventually, too.

Israel bails on condemnation of China's treatment of Uighurs

Israel has dropped its signature from a United Nation statement condemning China’s human rights abuses against Uyghur Muslims in Xinjiang province, local media reported.

On October 21, 2021, 43 countries condemned China’s practices against Uyghur Muslims and other minorities in the Xinjiang region, in a consolidated statement at the United Nations.

The 43 countries that signed the statement are Turkey, United States, Britain, France, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Honduras, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, Spain and Sweden which expressed particular concern at ‘credible reports’ of the existence of ‘re-education camps’ in Xinjiang.

The move comes despite Israel having signed a declaration by the United Nations Human Rights Council in June calling on China to allow independent monitors access to the western region of Xinjiang.

According to the The Times of Israel, an Israeli diplomat, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the government had received a draft resolution beforehand but decided not to support the initiative, due to “other interests it has to balance”.

“We call on China to allow immediate, meaningful and unfettered access to Xinjiang for independent observers, including the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet and her office,” Times of Israel quoted reporting the Israel’s statement.

Straight up cowardly and repugnant of Israel of all countries to shirk away from condemning genocide in Xianjiang because they don't want to upset the CCP.

It looks utterly awful. And by now people should know that in I/P, looks can be deceiving.

Her funeral route had been agreed upon by police and Abu Akleh’s family, according to media reports, and was to include the carrying of her body by hearse to a Catholic church in Jerusalem’s Old City, and then a procession to the Christian cemetery where she was to be buried in a family plot.

By noon, a crowd of several hundred formed at the entrance to St. Joseph’s Hospital in East Jerusalem, where Abu Akleh’s body had rested overnight. In the minutes before the procession was due to leave the hospital, several dozen Muslim men lined up for Friday prayers, kneeling in the parking lot. Behind them, two mourners held up large floral crosses. Then the crowd gathered, with Palestinian flags waving.

But a group of men in the crowd prevented a hearse from backing up to the hospital door, saying they were intent on carrying her body on their shoulders. The standoff eventually prompted Akleh’s brother, sitting on a man’s shoulders, to beseech the crowd to let the hearse through. “For God’s sake, let us put her in the car and finish the day,” he said.

“On the shoulder, on the shoulder!” people chanted, and beat the hearse with sticks until it pulled away for a second time. The crowd cheered when the men eventually dragged the coffin out on their shoulders, followed by a stretcher carrying the journalist’s blue bullet-resistant vest.

But Israeli police at the hospital gate refused to let the crowd through and, within minutes, a squad in riot gear pushed forward, setting off stun grenades and beating back the mourners with truncheons. People scattered amid a cascade of thrown bottles and rocks. At one point, Abu Akleh’s coffin lurched toward the ground, but the pallbearers managed to keep it aloft.

With police standing post in the compound, the hearse sped from the hospital compound under heavy Israeli guard to the Cathedral of the Annunciation of the Virgin in Jerusalem’s Old City.

Incorrect. There was no mention of a hearse for the funeral by family members:

This was due to the fact that traditional Palestinian funerals carry the coffin by hand to the resting place.

There was no mention of a "hearse" in other media either:

Furthermore, the Israeli police entered the hospital and continued to attack people inside:

-

The video also shows her brother describing what was discussed between the family and the Israeli police, which made NO MENTION of a "hearse".

The fragile governing coalition of PM Naftali Bennett - including far-left socialists, far-right settler activists, the Russian-and-Ukrainian party, and an Arab Islamist party - has officially broken apart. Bennett will step down as PM next week, to be replaced by his second in command Yair Lapid - by far the most moderate PM Israel will have had in 20 years or more. Elections - the 5th in 3 years - will be in October. The coalition had not been able to pass a law barring those under criminal indictment from running for high office, so hypothetically Netanyahu could win again.

Below is an opinion piece, at the website "Al Jazeera", which is usually pro-Palestine (or possibly "anti-Israel") :

-
"Israel’s latest military assault on the Gaza Strip – codenamed Operation Breaking Dawn – spanned three days in early August and killed at least 44 Palestinians, including 16 children. According to the Israeli government, the attack was a “preemptive” operation against the Palestinian Islamic Jihad group – which is as creative an excuse as any for spontaneously bombing people for no apparent reason...

The full article is here: - https://www.aljazeera.com/opinions/2022/8/12/israel-normalising-terror-one-dawn-at-a-time

For those unfamiliar with Al Jazeera:

- "Founded in 1996, Al Jazeera is an international news network owned by Qatar’s state through the Qatar Media Corporation. It is headquartered in Doha, Qatar...Dr. Mostefa Souag is currently Acting Director-General of the Al Jazeera Media Network...

...Overall, we rate Al Jazeera Left-Center biased, based on story selection that slightly favors the left and Mixed for factual reporting due to failed fact checks that were not corrected and misleading extreme editorial bias that favors Qatar..."

Also, one of its most prestigious reporters was reportedly shot dead on purpose by Israeli soldiers.

Al Jazeera is a useful news source AS LONG AS they aren't reporting on the Middle East or Muslim related issues. It's the way I've treated them for years.

"Eight people have been wounded after a Palestinian gunman opened fire at two locations in Jerusalem, officials say. The assailant targeted a bus carrying Jewish worshippers who had just prayed at the Western Wall as well as people in a car park near the holy site. Two of the wounded are in a serious condition, including a pregnant woman. US citizens were among the victims. The gunman, identified as a resident of occupied East Jerusalem, fled the scene but later turned himself in. Israeli police said he had a criminal record but no known affiliations with Palestinian militant groups..."

This round of conflict was different from what we usually see. Instead of responding to rocket fire, it seems Israel tallied the various plots and chatter they were tracking from Islamic Jihad and decided the time was right for a pre-emptive, decapitating strike.

Here's a review suggesting it was also meant to signal that Israel would not wait for Iran (IJ's sponsor) to strike first in a future conflict.

Perhaps because IJ was taken by surprise, of the thousands of missiles they launched at Israel many were misfires that actually landed in Gaza:

Close to one-third of the Palestinians who died in the latest outbreak of violence between Israel and Gaza militants may have been killed by errant rockets fired by the Palestinian side, according to an Israeli military assessment that appears consistent with independent reporting by The Associated Press. The Israeli military said 47 Palestinians were killed in the weekend of fighting — at least 14 of them by Islamic Jihad-fired rockets that fell short.

Also worth noting: Hamas stayed out of this conflict, and actually pressed IJ to reach a ceasefire.

As for Al-Jazeera, their managing director from 2014-2018 helpfully and professionally elevated the discussion with a Jews-killed-Christ meme:

If anyone responsible for Jesus's death were still alive today to kill Palestinians, that'd be rather surprising.

Google and Amazon want more defense contracts, despite worker protests
Protesters oppose Israeli government contract they say could have military uses.
"...(S)cenes unfolded outside Google and Amazon offices in New York and Seattle, and a Google office in Durham, North Carolina. Google and Amazon employees were joined at the rallies by tech workers from other companies and Palestinian rights organizations. They all convened to protest Project Nimbus, Google and Amazon's cloud computing contract with the Israeli government..."
