Ninja Turtles - Cowabunga!

Games wise, I thought the NES TMNT 2 beat em up looked better than the Manhattan Project. Manhattan Project also had that weird move where all the guys would use their weapons to flip the enemies over their heads, even Mikey's nunchucks. Odd.
I liked the second one because it was modeled after the arcade game. But the third one was able to have more enemies on the screen, the hit stun actually allowed the turtles to hit the enemies with their normal attacks without getting hit in return. In 2 if you wanted to avoid getting hit, you were down to jump kicks and special attacks. The only draw back was that when too much was happening, there was tremendous lag. But past that, the third one did a lot more that the second one didn't.

That said, I did rate 2 above 3 and I do like it more. It's modeled after the arcade game and I have more nostalgia for it since it's the one I played as a kid.

I always wondered who the polar bear Tora (?) was in the ice level boss. He looked cool but he wasn't in the comics or tv show?

Him and Shogun were both made specifically for the game. IIRC, I think they were made by Eastman, but don't quote me on that. Konami knew the NES just didn't have the power to make any kind of satisfying port of an arcade game. So to make up for it, they lengthened the levels and put in two entirely new ones.

So gotten around to Caldwin's favorite episode in my rewatch, and I realize that the writer has their facts wrong. Wasps don't die when they sting someone, that's bees. Thus, Caldwin should be fine watching this, becuase there are no wasps in this episode. :p

You know, I did consider that while I was "watching" the episode. Oddly enough, it didn't help.

Sorry about this, but this is one of those days at work where there's nothing to do and I'm trying desperately to just stay awake. So I'm going to do some ratings.

NES Game
First game based on the TMNT. I have to hand it to them, this game isn't terrible for a first home game. You can play as any turtle at any time. They each have strengths and weaknesses. And the controls actually are pretty tight. And you know what, while the difficulty will be brought up in the negatives, let's not forget that in the days in Nintenhard, it was never expected that you should be able to always get past the first couple levels.

That said, all I have to say about the difficulty is Damn Dam level and people know what I'm saying. And it doesn't get any easier. And while Nintendo games at the time were supposed to be hard, this was probably too much for kids. "But, Caldwin, who said this was for kids? There was an adult oriented comic before the kids show." While true, the inclusion of Rocksteady, Bebop and a Splinter that actually is Hamato Yoshi, we can tell this was aimed at the kids show demographic...and they probably made it a bit too Nintenhard.

B+

Arcade Game
Holy crap, would you look at that? The sprites look just like the cartoon. Every arcade had this game and every kid played it. And there isn't a single character here that kids wouldn't recognize. Nostalgia alone means this is going to be scored high.

While very good in its own way, it's sequel did everything this one does only better.

A++

TMNT II The Arcade Game
The arcade game comes home. I played the hell out of this. It has everything the arcade game has plus two new stages, Fly Baxter Stockman...and no more quarter munching.

The graphic and gameplay really just can't begin to compare to its arcade counterpart. The next game also does everything this one does only better.

B

TMNT Arcade II: Turtles in Time
Even better graphics than the first. Fighting is tightened up and tossing Foot Soldiers towards the screen never gets old.

Where the heck is Rocksteady and Bebop? Who the heck is Cement Man? Yeah, Google search will tell you Cement Man was in a single episode but who besides the most hardcore of fans would know that?

S

TMNT III The Manhattan Project
Faster paced than TMNT II...more moves, slightly better graphics.

There's really bad slowdown when there's too much on the screen. This was also so close to the end of the NES's lifespan, not too many people actually played this.

B-

TMNT IV: Turtles in Time
This is actually widely considered to be better than its arcade counterpart. Graphics are just as good. Cement Man is replaced with Slash. Bebop and Rocksteady replace Tokka and Rahzar, but no worries because they just get moved up to an added Technodrome level that wasn't in the arcade. Rat King also makes an appearance. This game has widely been considered the number 1 TMNT game with nothing ever challenging that statement until Shredder's Revenge.

Fighting is a bit simplified from the arcade and bosses follow a very predictable pattern compared to the more unpredictable arcade version.

S

Hyperstone Heist
Decent graphics and it playes alright. If you've played Turtles in Time too much and want something different, this will scratch the itch.

It's obvious Genesis did this game because they couldn't get Turtles in Time. Overly long levels cause some really bad pacing issues. Levels and most bosses are Frankensteined from levels in other Turtles games. Nothing original here.

C

Tournament Fighters
Very Street Fighteresque. Great graphics and a roster that borrows from the cartoon, the Mirage and Archie Comics.

Hot take, I just really didn't enjoy this. I only played the SNES version, so maybe my opinion will change when I play the Genesis version when the Cowabunga Collection comes out. But like, even when I'm not using my main, I can usually do decently at Street Fighter. But this game just kicks my butt and the controls just aren't comfortable for me. I just can't even with this game. Hot take and I'm probably going to take some flak, but...

F

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Based on the 2003 cartoon, this takes the brawler into 3D fairly well. Hit detection is decent. Graphics are decent. It's not terrible.

Adam West Batman sound effects appearing on screen after every punch gets annoying. Beat 'em Ups are best kept short, otherwise it gets repetitive and tedious. This got really old really fast. Also, while following the source material closely is usually a good thing, this follows the show so closely that you might as well go watch the show.

D

Battle Nexus
At least they got rid of the Adam West Batman sound effects. You could also unlock the original Arcade game.

If the first game was boring and monotonous, this is just more of the same. Arcade game doesn't have the original music or voice acting due to rights issues

B- (and it only scored so high because it included the arcade game before Arcade 1Up existed)

Mutant Nightmare
Finally included 4-player. You can unlock Turtles in Time.

Even with 4-Player, it's more of the same. Like Battle Nexus, the music in Turtles in Time had to be replaced. There was also an annoying high pitched cacophony during time warp transitions.

B- (again, only scored so high for the inclusion of Turtles in Time)

Shredder's Revenge
Finally, after all this time we get a new TMNT beat em up. Not only do we get the turtles, but: Splinter, April and Casey Jones join the fray. They have all the familiar faces you could want (Rocksteady, Bebop, Tokka, Rahzar, Baxter Stockman, Leatherhead, Rat King, Chrome Dome, Slash). Play controls are tight. Every character has his/her own style and feel. You can have up to 6 people playing at once.

[negatives go here]

S

So today I was playing a rare Kid Rock CD on my PS3 since the PS3 is really the only thing I have hooked up to my sound system. After listening to a few tunes I thought to myself, "you know what? It's been a while since I've played the X-Men Arcade Game. So I played a couple levels of that. But while playing the X-Men Arcade game I came to a realization. There was one game I completely left out of the list above. So now I am going to have to rectify that mistake.

Turtles in Time Re-Shelled
Let's see...good points. Umm...well...umm...well...it was a Turtles beat-em-up at a time when beat-em-ups were hard to come by. And...I mean...they did update the graphics...I guess.

Buuuuut, the "update" with the graphics wasn't exactly the best, even by the standards of the time. It was somewhere between good graphics for a PS2, but didn't really measure up to the PS3 capabilities. And while the stages and enemies did try to emulate the original game, the game play absolutely did not. 8-Way attacks fundamentally changed the game to where it really shouldn't have even shared the name with the original. Also, they took a colorful, cartoony sprite classic and made it into a dark, drab, polygonal slog fest. It absolutely does not measure up to the SNES or the Arcade games. It was just...not good. I keep it on my PS3 hard drive just for the sake of posterity. But with the SNES version, the Arcade 1UP and the Cowabunga Collection incoming...I just see no reason to ever go back to playing this.

I would say F...but that would be an insult to the other game I ranked an F. I didn't care for Tournament Fighters, but even it doesn't deserve to be compared to this. So...

F-

Holy crap! They actually had the balls to adapt this story into a kids show!

Damn! I mean, I had Splinters death spoiled for me unfortunately. And even if I hadn't, they really foreshadowed the hell out of it. But that didn't make the moment any less brutal to watch 😢

C'mon! Someone say something. This makes a sextuple post!

Anyway...Shredder really does get creepier the longer the series goes on.

Sounds like you're almost to the end.

I'm on the last season. Not sure I like what they did with the opening theme music. And of course the production order vs. collection order is all screwed up. But the series has been a total blast. Honestl, I wasn't expecting to really like it, especially not this much. But it really quickly became my favorite TMNT series.

Shedder is almost the 2k3 Baxter Stockman of this series

That's actually a pretty good way of putting it.

Wait, what did you think of the end of the space adventure? I was wondering how they would deal with two sets of kids so the obvious solution didn't occur to me, haha.

I dunno who Alopex is in the comics or lore but I thought, dang, she could have been Ninjara. Also, such a shame that so many new character builds were made and won't be reused again cuz it's the ending. Hothead looked awful though.

On Requiem, I thought it was a fake out, since the cause of the space adventure just happened too. I didn't think it would stick.

It's been awhile since I've seen it, but how did Shredder go from being mostly okay right after the space arc to being bedridden near the end of the fourth season? I can't remember how he got to be in such a state, but it always struck me like part of the story was missing. Did I miss an episode where the Turtles injured him that badly?

Basically Alopex exists because Ninjara is a copywrited character they don't own the right to.
Not exactly....maybe.

Viacom owns Ninjara lock, stock and barrel, now (Murphy and Allan have revealed that they no longer own the character rights)
Ninjara is owned lock stock and barrel by Mirage, thus presumably Nickelodeon now.
Murphy told me that he sold Ninjara to Mirage right before the sale to Nick.

I can't find any interviews for this. It might have originally been on the old 5th Turtle blog, or something. But, there's a number of people online saying that Murphy either sold the rights back to Mirage before Mirage sold them to Viacom...or Murphy never owned the character to begin with. I'm not sure how much truth there is to this.

But, if it is the case, they COULD use Ninjara...but just don't. Maybe because she was in a "adult" comic, and they don't want new fans tracking down those issues? Maybe Archie lost their contracts like with Ken Penders and Sonic the Hedgehog? I'm honestly not sure what the full story is here.

I think IDW reprinted the Archie issues where Ninjara appears, too. So...I guess Viacom just would rather use Alopex?

@Fero McPigletron
The ending was probably the only way it could have ended. But it did seem rather abrupt. As fun as the space episodes were (and they were a LOT of fun), I'm kinda glad to be back on earth again.

The others seem to have explained Alopex/Ninjara, so moving on.

@Sabrblade
I mean, the fight between him and Splinter was rather brutal, but you're right. The ending didn't make it seem like he was that injured. Maybe he was just more injured than I thought.

As far as Alopex and Ninjara goes, at first I preferred Ninjara since I'd grown up with the Archie comics. But Alopex has really grown on me to the point that I think I actually prefer her over Ninjara.

As for rights issues, I think "common knowledge" is what Shadewing said...that they just don't own the rights. But Zaku seems tonhave done some research, so I can't readily argue for or against either explanation without more research (that I'm not prepared to do at this very moment). But I guess that goes to show that copyright issues are never really so cut and dry.

It's also worth mentioning that Ninjara did appear in IDW's 30th Anniversary Special. But, that appearance was also written by Stephen Murphy/Dean Clarrain (they're the same person). As far as I know, no one else has ever used the character.

Here's a video on Ninjara as a whole:

Now, as for what I think about all the fox-girls?

2012 Alopex....I honestly kind of forgot existed. She just didn't leave much of a impression on me, I guess. She comes in fairly late and isn't in a lot of episodes. I don't hate or like her.

IDW Alopex is probably my favorite of the three. Her backstory is more integrated into TMNT's world. She gets to have a lot of screen-time in the comic due to how long the comic is. She's a tough girl with a heart of gold, when she's not being mind controlled. She's running a soup kitchen right now for goodness sake. That alone probably makes her the "nicest" of the three foxes. And she and Raph have probably the most solid romantic relationship in the comic. They seem good for each other. It's nice to see. Plus, the white fur with blue markings is just a more visually interesting color scheme to me.

Archie's Ninjara? I think there are moments where it's really sweet seeing her and Raph together. But...when you think about it, she kind of has a troubling history with romance, it seems. She seems to have a certain pattern of behavior in relationships. She falls head over heels for a guy fairly quickly. She kind of obsesses over him. Makes herself a part of nearly every part of his life. Then grows either bored or fed up with him. Then she meets a new guy...rinse and repeat. She seems to do this with Chien Khan (fair enough on him, he WAS trying to release a Dragon demon to destroy the world.) She does this with Raphael. And she seems to have started the cycle again with Mokoshan. It just really left a sour taste in my mouth how she kind of threw Raph under the bus because she didn't like living in sewers. Mind you, the "real" reason was probably because Murphy was politely but firmly asked to write her out of the book, since the TMNT in actual relationships has always been a bit of a problem for some people.

So, why am I so obsessed with a character I'm luke-warm on, at best? Well, I just find the publication history fascinating. And I have to wonder if Archie's legal team was ALWAYS so incompetent that they didn't have ANYONE sign work-for-hire contracts AT ALL. It's mostly how this relates to Ken Penders and the Echidna debacle that I find truly interesting, I guess.

From what I understand, Archie lost Pender's contracts due to an office fire. However All I can find is ACP blaming "warehouse workers incompetence" for not having files or contracts dating back to early 90's when Penders was hired. So chances are contracts dealing with TMNT was likely also not kept up with/lost since they'd be from the same era. So to me it feels like Viacom is erring on the side of caution, creating their own Ninja Fox without any baggage (wither that's being a furry import or copyright issues or both); seeing as they only time Ninjara showed up was when written by her creator.

I really liked Ninjara at the time because it was the first time I saw one of the Turtles in a romantic relationship. Like, Michelangelo and Kara was only likecl one or two episodes. That was more of an infatuation than a romantic relationship. Ditto Raph and Mona Lisa. Ninjara was a fleshed out character with an actual relationship. And yeah, okay, I was a bit furry for her.

2012 Alopex has only been in one episode so far. I don't know if she shows up again. Like most one-episode wonders, I can't really say too much about her. Aside from the name, she really has nothing to do with IDW Alopex. She doesn't strike up a relationship with any of the main cast. Soooo...*shrugs*

IDW Alopex is hands down my favorite. Whereas Ninjara kinda felt like backgroundish sidekick for the turtles in general and arm decoration for Raph in particular, you really get to know Alopex as a character both in her own right and as part of the group. And yes, the white with blue face markings is more visually interesting. I hope they bring back the face markings next issue. They've been sorely missing the past couple issues.

And yes, I'm a bit furry for her too.

Since I don't know her, who appeared first? Alopex comics or Alopex Nick TMNT? Is Razorclaw even a comic creation? Like, he's the brother of Alopex in the show. (Razorclaw is pretty cool, if odd. A samurai cowboy tiger? He should have been Verminator X, honestly)

Ninjara, I was ok with. Found it weird that angry Raph of all turtles had a girlfriend first, haha. What did Splinter think about his girlfriend living with them?

Always thought Dean Clarrain was an awesome writer for an Archie title. I should actually look up what other comics he wrote. And how Stephen Murphy came up with the Clarrain name.
