IDW Alopex first appeared in the IDW Raphael Microseries one shot on December 7 2011. 2012 Alopex first appeared in "Tale of Tiger Claw" on December 17 2016 (in Southeast Asia, the episode wouldn't air until February 12 2017 in the US). So almost 5 years apart exactly.

Tiger Claw was made for the 2012 show, The only other tiger character that MIGHT be a partial inspiration for him that I can think of is Katmandu from Archie. But...they're not very similar at all. For one thing...Katmandu has four arms.

It's been a bit since I read the Archie TMNT series. But I think Splinter was pretty okay with Ninjara moving in. She didn't have anyplace else to go, and he seemed to welcome her with open arms...after getting used to the idea of his "kids" growing up.

I guess Issue 37 is where Splinter and Ninjara have a little talk about her being part of the family, now.

And, apparently the "Dean Clarrain" pseudonym was a anagram for a old girlfriend of his. It's in the "Who is Ninjara" video I linked to before. 40 seconds in.

It's also worth mentioning that Ninjara did appear in IDW's 30th Anniversary Special. But, that appearance was also written by Stephen Murphy/Dean Clarrain (they're the same person). As far as I know, no one else has ever used the character.
Oh my god, I had no idea this existed. I need to read it!

As for Archie and TMNT, from what I remember reading on some of the creators' blogs back in the day, I was under the impression it was an entirely different situation from what Sonic was. Whereas Sonic was created in-house by Archie staff (or contractors), Archie was simply the publisher for TMNT Adventures, which was created by Mirage staff. IIRC, the nature of this led to some friction with Archie as well, what with some of their edgier content.

IDW Alopex came first? Wow! I didn't realize the comic had gone on that long! I remember talking about the first issue on the old boards and how cool it was they were wearing the red masks. I feel old again.

Does it say something about me that I actually liked April as a vampire?

So, watching 'Of Rats and Men' and it kinda surprises me that AFAIK they never connect Casey's fear of rats to Rat King's last appearance with him using rats to attack humans en mass. Phobias usually have some starting point, and it would have been a neat bit of continuity if Casey had been trapped by the rats and that's what lead to his fear of them.

Well the last series ended with a sequel hook, iirc. So not surprised we're finally following up on that.

Two questions:

1) I've decided I want to finally hunker down and watch the last seasons of the 1987 cartoon. I've already seen Season 8, but I figure I might as well get the entire Red Sky era together. What are my options? Because Netflix clearly ain't it, and YouTube isn't proving much better beyond sporadic episodes.

2) I always remembered TMNT Adventures as one of, if not my overall favorite of TMNT, and that it was good. But I forgot just how good until I was reading a little bit earlier.

I know IDW did reprints, but did they do the entire thing? Are they good? Did they put lipstick on people with weird recoloring choices like they did Transformers?

Because I'm interested in getting them, but only if I can get the whole thing. Or at least all the relevant stuff (Specials' side stories rarely seeming to matter).

Amazon still has the entire series set for $25. I listed what episodes were on which disks a few pages back.

I got the entire collection on ComiXology. They have most of the series. They missed issues 32-37 which pissed me off. Luckily I already had all those physically except 34 which I was able to find on e-bay.

I get most of my comics on ComiXology these days, so I couldn't say how easy they are to find physically. And like I said, they are missing those issues. But those are the only collections I know of that are readily available.

I'll check on the episode thing, thanks!

Does that comic collection include the side series, like Mighty Mutanimals, April's stuff, etc.? Sounds like a depiction of Mohammad was the reason for those issues being cut. Sheesh, you'd think they could have just edited... that was one of my favorite arcs!

Volume 6 includes the original 3-issue Mutanimals mini-series, probably because it had a direct connection to story arc that was going on with the turtles at the time. Other than that, I'm afraid it was just the Turtles main series without side stuff.

That 3-Parter was easily hands-down the best Usagi/TMNT crossover ever! And that skull speech-balloon at the end of the fight? Sheer perfection! Any fan of Usagi Yojimbo has to see this 3-Parter. And the fact that it was actually written by Stan Sakai...I am so geeking out right now.

Dude! That was hugging DARK! But let's take it from the beginning.

So it started as a...well, it was something between Mad Max and Old Man Logan. I still want to know that a turtle can go hair. Robot Donny reminds me of Briareos from Appleseed.

It had a tone very much like Mad Max until Mikey came along and just...it really changed the mood from there on out. But it still was very much Mad Max/Old Man Logan

Creepy that this whole time, Raphael had Casey Jones' skull as part of a self-destruct for his truck. It also looks like since April's fan is also a decoration in the truck, I guess she's dead too.

It was pretty obvious the big bad was Leonardo. For a brief moment I thought maybe Slash, but no, it was definitely Leo.

I don't know. As a whole, I loved the series. And there are definitely episodes I'll want to go back and watch again. But dang! This was a very dark way to end the series. Like, sure, the four brothers, Ice Cream Kitty, Chompy and Mira survived. That leaved Casey definitely dead (seeing as how we see his freaking skull made into a bomb), April implied to be dead (it was said no humans made it out alive and it showed her damaged fan). Karai and Mona Lisa are unaccounted for. Like...dang! This was a heck of a depressing ending!

Well, I guess I'm ready to start Rise next. Overall grade for 2012...

I'm going to have to go with an A. There were moments that I wish I could give it an 'S' rating. But there were so many times that Mikey went from amusing to downright cringe. And this really was a hell of a downer ending.

At the same time though, I'm thoroughly convinced that this was NOT a kids show. That's not an indictment, just a heck of a surprising note. It had the guts to go far darker than I ever thought I'd see a TMNT toon go. The punches that it absolutely did not pull with Rat King, the Halloween arc, the Usagi Yojimbo arc, Karai's whole story line...this show had some freaking balls!

So yeah, it definitely deserves a high grade. It totally deserves an 'A'. But some Mikey moments (why the heck does Donny even allow that buffoon into his lab?) and...I can't even say bitter sweet. It was totally a downer ending when you consider the state of the world and all the people who are either dead or unaccounted for. Totally downer ending and I just...I can't give it that final push to an 'S' grade. But it's definitely a high 'A'.

To be fair, I think there's a reason why Nick went with the crossover with the 80s Turtles to be the last episodes they actually showed. With how much they crossed over, it still feels like a decent finale without being as dire as the Future three-parter. I'm not sure the future arc hits the same way as when it aired, since at the time Mad Max Fury Road was a big deal, but now it kind of has to stand on it's own.

I guess it's become tradition at this point for the TMNT to have a dark future. Nearly every series seems to do it.

And, yes, agreed on this being the best crossover we've ever gotten with Usagi Yojimbo. We actually had a little bit of time to explore his world. Arguably, the best official animated version of Usagi we've gottten ever, including the Netflix show.

Personally, I still like the 2003 cartoon the best, but I think 2012 is a close second. It just feels like 2003 had a bigger focus on the plot and some more varied villains. But, I think the 2012 version might have the most fleshed out version of the core characters. And some of those moments of horror were REALLY memorable. When it was going full-on horror movie it was powerful stuff.

And 2012's version of the Mirage Turtles was even kind of memorable. Silent, near-alien feeling Turtles since they're from a completely different medium than the cartoon-based Turtles. Comics have no sound, after all. Kind of clever.

But, I think the 2012 version of Shredder might be the most forgettable of the cartoon Shredders. Some of the stuff that happens TO him is interesting, but he HIMSELF isn't really that interesting. And I think the first two seasons leaned a little too heavily on the Kraang for my liking. But, your mileage may vary.

And, I hope you have fun with Rise, too. Just...keep it mind it's trying to do something completely different.

Caldwin, do you think you might have preferred ending the series the way Nick did by finishing it with the '80s Turtles crossover episodes instead of the Mad Max-styled episodes?
