I think 2012 is the best human Shedder we've gotten outside of comics.
*Looks over at 80s Shredder and...um...MAYBE 2003 Karai if you want to get loose with your definition of "Shredder"...I guess that's it*

Yeah, that's fair. If Karai counts, my vote may go to her, but still...fair.

90's Movie Shedder, Next Mutation Shedder, LA Reboot Shedder, would also count as Human non-comic Shedders. And the only good one of them is the 90's movie Shedder, but still he just kinda exists in the movies, and is barely a threat.

I have to say, I don't really see the issue with Mutant Apocalypse, as i personally don't see it as anything more then the typical 'Bad future' storyline that I think just about EVERY version of TMNT does at some point. LIke sure, its the series finale, but I don't take it to mean that is the definitive end of that continuity. TMNT has been doing a 'Days of Future Past' Storyline (Or I guess nowadays its 'Old Man Logan') since the very beginning.
Even Rise is getting to do that somewhat with their movie, though that's a bit more 'DBZ Androids Saga' from how the trailer looks.

Caldwin, do you think you might have preferred ending the series the way Nick did by finishing it with the '80s Turtles crossover episodes instead of the Mad Max-styled episodes?

I think I can answer both of these with the same response. Yes, I think it would've been better to go the Nick route and end it on the 80's crossover, or even the Usagi crossover because dang, that kicked ass.

And to be clear, I have no issues with the episodes taken by themselves. I love seeing the Turtles in a Mad Max world. And as Shadewing said, just about every iteration of TMNT has a bad future.

It's just that there's a difference between leaving an episode with a downer/bittersweet ending and leaving the entire series with a downer/bittersweet ending. And while other series are absolutely made for a downer ending, I just hate to see it with TMNT, especially given how light hearted it started out.

Like Caldwin said, the episodes themselves are good. It's just as a finale its kind of unsatisfying.

With "bad future" storylines in general, USUALLY the point is to avoid the bad future. We're given some way to change the past in order to get a better future. We really don't get that here. We're not really presented with any way to avoid this future, it just kind of exists. We aren't even given any context for the mutagen bomb that kicks this storyline off. We don't even know who set it off (though, we can probably assume the Kraang). It's not a bad finale, but it's a very unconventional one.

And, honestly...at this point I'd be okay with them subverting this trope. It's kind of like with the X-Men. You can only do a "bad future" storyline so many times before it becomes a little stale. I wouldn't mind a "Wolverine and the X-Men" style future for once where everything's just fine. I mean, at least here it's usually only ONE bad future per continuity, unlike in X-Men where we're up to 5 or 6, but you get my point.

I get ya, but out of all of those mini-arcs we got in the final season after the first arc, the Mad Max-styled one is the only one that, to me, feels like a proper conclusion. When watching the final season as it aired on Nick, after the 80s crossover arc ended the series as a whole, I was left feeling "That's it? That's how it ends?" It didn't feel like the series was over. It instead felt like it just stopped, with nothing to bring the series to a real close.

After learning that the season had been aired out of production order and that the final arc was supposed to be the Mutant Apocalypse one that had instead aired near the middle of the season, I was like "Aw man, now THAT would have been an ending!"

Rise of the TMNT: brief notes watching the first episode.

Theme song is annoying. Maybe I'll get used to it. But right now, it's obnoxious.

Ugh! After such nicely detailed and textured CGI from the 2012 series, the animation is already hitting me the wrong way.

So, next series, April's going to be an infant? She keeps getting younger. And could they possibly make her sound any more stereotypical? Not too wild about the turtle's designs either. I hope this has a hell of a story plot.

Don't really care for Splinter either.

Aaaaand that was the first episode. This kind of show is what I like to call concentrated ADHD. It's like they want to get all of the ritalin cases all riled up.

Now, I did buy all three seasons, and I do want to be able to say I gave it a fair shot. So I'll keep going for now. But this is not a good start.

Okay, I got through two episodes and I absolutely must call it a night. It's just too much. I'll try again tomorrow, but this is really not a good start.

No, its not good start, and it honestly doesn't get good, imo, till about halfway through season 1 (there are 2 seasons 26 eps in season 1, 13 in season 2). As someone that just watched through all this:

1. April and Splinter are probably the best, or at least most interesting, versions of themselves... once given a chance to be characters. Splinter is... its gonna be awhile before he gets that chance, and he's gonna be AWFUL til then.

2. Rise's lore... once it actually gets going.., is actually VERY good. But again... it takes while before it does so, and until then you mostly get MOTW plots that will be very hit or miss.

3. No, that theme song doesn't really grow on you, it never really did with me.

All I can say is... Stick with it, it will most likely eventually win you over; most I talk to that like it, tended not be fans until bothers really telling its story.

Since shows like Teen Titans Go, Thundercats Roar, Kamp Koral, and Total Dramarama keep getting made, this is sadly a non-zero possibility. You KNOW some executive somewhere is just WAITING for someone to pitch them TMNT Cowabunga.

As for Rise...yeah, it takes a little while for the show to show you what it's really made of. Just...try to power through. It does become surprisingly worth it. Just...try to focus on the action choreography until then. Even from the first two-parter, the action really was the highlight of the show.

Also... I feel the comment on Rise April is wrong. We actually see he struggling with part-time jobs. So she has to be at least 16. So she's the same age as 2012 April was at the start.

Eh... Honestly I feel Rise was pitched as EXACRTLY that... The fact it gets better doesn't change that the series very much feels like it was aiming at that trend.

So, speaking of finales, or at least endings, my understanding is that's basically what Last Ronin is for IDW's TMNT?

I've been hearing great things about it, but I've fallen way behind in my reading of IDW TMNT. Is it a future-tense ending for the series? And if so, am I going to want to have caught up with the rest of the series before reading it?

Last Ronin isn't really a ending for IDW's TMNT, specifically. It's...more of a vague possible ending for any and all possible TMNT universes? Kind of like what they're doing for Last Bot Standing. It's not specifically in-continuity with anything else. But, it's generic enough that it COULD be a possible ending for everything. You don't HAVE to read it in order to understand anything going on in the main book. You can basically read it anytime you want.

Now, IDW TMNT actually DID have a potential bad-future special, too. In their 20/20 series of one-shots. It was basically just a What If, but it's closer to being a part of the "main" IDW continuity than Last Ronin is.

And, of course, there's the future that Lita is from that's...probably close to the future we might actually get. (Depending on how long you've been off the book, you might not know who I'm talking about and that's okay).

Really, if you basically know the basics about any version of the Turtles, you should do well reading Last Ronin. As long as you know some version of Karai and some version of the Fugitoid, you'll be able to follow it all. It's definitely worth reading. And it's only five issues, so it shouldn't take too terribly long.

Keep going! I was waiting for you to get started on Rise and see your thoughts on it. It's a whole new world of mutants out there! Say which Rise Turtle you end up liking (and explain why it's Donnie, haha)

On the end of Nick TMNT, I didn't like the ending of the Mad Max story cuz we don't see them in paradise. Also, what happened to April and Casey? When did the bomb hit? They died as kids?

The skull balloons at the Usagi eps were funny. The whiny kid's voice annoyed me so I didn't enjoy the arc as much. If only it wasn't an escort story they had.

Loved that Nick Bebop and Rocksteady were going to be heroes but I don't like the final ending to be classic Bebop and Rocksteady having the last word.

I would have loved another Mutanimal team up, if to see Monkey Brains in action again. But they left the team and Mona with a wrecked base. They could have given them more, c'mon.

I was more worried about the other way around, needing to read the rest of IDW TMNT before reading The Last Ronin, but nevertheless, point taken. XD

Thanks, folks, I'll try to give it a look sooner than later. =)

So far it's none of them. Outside of Rise, Raph has been my favorite ever since the or live action movie. But this Raph has very little in common with any other Raph ever. In fact, except for Mikey, it feels like none of the characters feel like who they're supposed to be. So far this really feels like a "in name only" Turtles series. If not for the assurances that it does get better, I would have dropped it by now. As It is, I'm pretty much resigned to eye rolls and putting it off as background noise.

I personally never had much issue with the Turtles' personalities; because at the core they're still the same characters. Raph is still the violent one with a fairly short fuse, Don is still the smartest turtle in the room and tech focused, Leo is still the most skilled of the four, and Mike is the more creative and emotional thinker. But their being largely different the their other selves imo, comes down to one primary thing; Splinter. This Splinter has been lacking as a sensei (and is in fact a plot point) thus I feel that is why the Turtles largely lack the discipline we see in their other selves. Though I think Rise Raph is interesting in that, his being the team leader, he tries to find better ways to focus his love hitting things and temper to be the 'respectable big brother' and try to set a good example.
