Nobody has the intention to invade Ukraine

What I find odd about the situation is that Putin is extremely right wing on most social issues and very visibly so. I just don't see why a noticable subset of left leaning people seem to support him.

It's a massive over-correction for what they see as US imperialism. Also, some of them are just tankies.

So Putin is claiming that the Russian troops stationed near the Ukrainian border have "completed their mission" and are now being withdrawn.

Meanwhile, NATO claims that Russia continues to increase the number of troops near the Ukrainian border.

Putin also claimed Russian troops weren't in Crimea despite all the evidence to the contrary several years ago. He doesn't deny it anymore.... Guy is ex-kgb. Lying is a big part of his playbook

wonko the sane?

So, here we go again. Think we're mature enough as a species yet that this shiny new cold war won't end in nuclear hellfire?

Maybe this was what Biden meant when he said the American response would depend on if it's a "minor incursion." There will be sanctions, but not the swift and severe ones. Okay.

I mean, to be fair I don't think any sanctions would really matter. No sanctions have stopped Russia from gobbling bits of Ukraine over the last near-decade. They can play the long game and be brought back into the fold and outlast all of this and get new territory or puppet states out of it. But I'm not sure what this is supposed to be.

Indeed. He's have to do a HELL of a lot more than this for all-out war to break out.

All out war wouldn't be on the table even if Russia blitzed Ukraine and Putin pissed on Kiev's ashes.

Once Donetsk and Luhansk are annexed without much blowback from the States, what’s so say Putin won’t take Estonia, Lithuania and Latvia using the same excuse that Russian speakers in those countries are ‘oppressed’ and need ‘liberating’?

Nothing, that's what. Putin is taking a page out of the Third Reich's playbook. Sanctions don't work on despots. They don't care if their people suffer. I hate to say it, I don't like violence, but Putin needs to be given a bloody nose.

Unless you're volunteering, he won't get it. I suspect he would need to invade something that didn't once belong to the soviet union to even get nato on any kind of war footing to begin with.

So this is the new cold war: tyrants and despots literally taking the world over by inches and everyone else so worried about status quo and economic growth that the "good people" will do nothing.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered troops into two Ukrainian regions held by Russian-backed separatists, a dramatic escalation that threatens to spiral out into a larger conflict.

Putin had amassed some 190,000 troops near the Ukrainian border and appeared to be making preparations for war. His decision Monday violates principles of international law, but isn’t yet being treated by the West as an invasion that the US promised would trigger a “massive” package of sanctions..."

  4. It's not clear if any Russian troops have been deployed so far into two breakaway regions of eastern Ukraine run by Moscow-backed separatists

There is speculation that Putin is currently on steroids. Meanwhile, others insist that the rest of the world simply "does not speak Putin".
