Now eventually you are going to have a Comic Book thread on this Comic Book forum, right?

Now this is...something else.

Bill Willingham has released the comic book series Fables into the public domain, as a "asymmetric warfare" tactic against DC Comics.

I don't know how this effects the last 3 issues of the return miniseries they were doing. I would guess it's not going to finish up now. But, this certainly is a move.

That would be more interesting if he wasn't fairly terrible as a person.

-ZacWilliam, I was always figuring I'd get around to reading it at some point but he's well and soured that from ever happening.

Willingham is a terrible person? What'd he do?

I read Fables up to... the final war. Flycatcher's reveal and I just gave up. I did look up the ending (where someone goes crazy and kills some main characters.) and I wanted to know what happened to the couple of puppets who wanted to be human (what happened to their child?)

I know Fables had spin offs like Cinderella secret agent but I didn't know they were bringing it back.

He's is and has been a deeply right wing conservative with prejudiced and extreme political and social opinions to match. He's also been blatantly misogynistic and disrespectful of female comics creators at convention appearances.

-ZacWilliam, he's just kinda slime, which makes me entirely willing to skip the worlds crafted from those viewpoints.

Ouch.

Not that I'm a huge fan of Fables (I actually just wanted it to wrap up when I was reading it) but it still bites for people who find out their fave creators aren't nice folks.

I saw a page on FB where Sabretooth was killing a kid. I looked at the comments to see that it's Artie?! Of Artie and Leech? He's dead?!?

Friend tells me something called the Sabretooth War is happening but I can't believe they're kill off Artie. He's always been a background character but I always thought he and Leech had potential for when someone used them. Gosh dang.

It probably wasn't Artie, just a background mutant that happens to look a lot like Artie. Artie actually hangs out with the Future Foundation kids in Fantastic Four, so I don't think they're killing him off.

But, yeah, Sabretooth War has been pretty brutal so far. Characters dying in pretty gruesome ways left and right. Daken, Wolverine's son, got dismembered. Sabretooths from alternate dimensions coming in so they can murder even more people Wolverine cares about. Wolverine losing his arms and legs so he has to go around on stumps. Just...some gratuitous stuff. Maybe going a bit too far in some cases.

I'm not sure how much of this will actually stick. They're hinting at a possible BIG reset button in the "main" Fall of X books, so all of this might just end up getting time-travelled away. Or maybe not. I get the feeling they might either be trying to slim down the cast for the next run, or maybe setting up Laura as a "main" Wolverine again. But, that's all speculation. I really don't know for sure what they have planned after Krakoa. The "Original X-Men" one shot and "Weapon X-Men" miniseries MIGHT be leading into the new era, but they might just be their own thing? We're at a weird point that we just don't know for sure what the future for the X-Men comics looks like.

It feels like Marvel's into some sort of 90s nostalgia kick with some "EXTREME" comics with parental advisories coming up. They're advertising the next Avengers event "Blood Hunt" will be the bloodiest book they're ever made. So, this seems to be something of a trend with Marvel and others lately.

The last few years I would of said it wouldn't be an issue if any mutant got axed. The Krakoan resurrection card was easily played for most characters. But right now they have taken it off the table for now with the whole Fall of X decimating the mutants..... Again. Marvel has a real problem of See-Sawing on letting the mutants flourish or not.

That said I don't think any of the Five of the mutant resurrection circuit have been permanently axed yet, just shunted to another dimension.

They also decided to kill off the extra Laura they had running around. But with the resurrection protocols saying she was the original might have been a stretch to begin with

Oh. It's nice to know that he's not Artie but, geeeez, that kid and the bird boy were actual background characters? They weren't even first appearance cannon fodders? They might have been someone's favorites too. Ow.

Does anyone know what is going on with the site ReadComicsFree? It's been down for a few days now.

Well, it's that time of year again! Free Comic Book Day is this Saturday! May 4th! That's right, Star Wars Day is also Free Comic Book Day, this year!

Some books that are worth highlighting:

Energon Universe-This is probably a obvious one, but one worth pointing out.

Blood Hunt/X-Men-This will probably give us the first look at what the X-Men books will be like after Krakoa is all finished up. Gail Simone is writing the X-Men story. Also...vampires, I guess?

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles-This will also give us a look at what the new TMNT book under Jason Aaron will be like. As well as stories from other authors.

DC Absolute Power-We get to see what Amanda Waller is planning for the DC universe in this prelude to a big event coming up.

Street Fighter vs Final Fight-It's a start of a crossover! And Udon's art is always worth checking out.

Ultimate Universe/Amazing Spider-Man-The Ultimate Universe books have been pretty solid so far. And Spider-Man is about to become...*SIGH*...the Spider-Goblin, so you know you want to be in on the ground floor of that!

Hellboy/Stranger Things-Hellboy is always a entertaining read. And Stranger Things can be fun in comic form. Why not?

Star Wars-This is all happening on May the 4th. It's kind of fitting to get a Star Wars comic on that day.

Eye Lie Popeye-Popeye the Sailor...done in a anime style. If nothing else, it should be entertaining.

Johnny Quest-The last time they tried to reintroduce these characters didn't last long (anyone else remember Future Quest?). I doubt this will last long, either. But, it'll probably be fun for as long as it lasts.

Gatchaman-They're also trying to bring this back! This FCBD is just all about bringing back old franchises, I guess.

Unico Awakening-Also, this! If you've never seen the two original Unico movies, try them out. They might surprise you!

Snoopy's Beagle Scouts-I mean, come on. If nothing else, it's bound to be nostalgic.

And I'll talk about some comics in general, why not?

X-Men-The Fall of X has been a crazy time. These books are VERY good, but this story is also VERY complex. Everything is weaving together. And I'm very much looking forward to the end in about a month. I don't know if I'll jump on the next era of X-men or not. But, the Krakoa era has been a experience....or X-perience, you might say (...I'm sorry).

The New Ultimate Universe-This really shouldn't have been called the "Ultimate" universe, because it has almost NO connection to that original universe. It's just confusing for people. But, the books themselves have been interesting. Ultimate Spider-Man is far more talky and slow than I expected, but it does feel very thoughtful and mature at times. Ultimate X-Men is basically a horror manga in disguise. And Ultimate Black Panther has some interesting world-building ideas going on. I'm not quite sure what's going to happen once the Maker comes back into the story, but for right now, it's a solid little universe. Ultimate Spider-Man is probably the best of the three books, in my opinion.

Spider-Boy-I have...questions with how this is supposed to work? If Spider-Man's sidekick was just erased from everyone's minds, why are all these villains he fought in the past just showing up now? Did the villains get erased from time, too? Dan Slott needs to explain, already.

Superman/Batman World's Finest-I've actually really enjoyed the sequels to Kingdom Come we've gotten in this book. They went interesting places with Magog/Kid Thunder.

Jay Garrick the Flash-This was just a fun, cute little miniseries. I like Jay learning how to be a dad. It's just a pleasant experience.

Si Spurrier's Flash-I feel like Si is trying VERY hard to channel Grant Morrison at times. And this is weird and dark at times. I am curious where he's going with all this.

Outsiders-Another book that feels like it's trying to channel Grant Morrison or Warren Ellis at times. Because, this is a stealth sequel to Planetary! Check it out if you like something a little meta and trippy!

Dungeons and Dragons Saturday Morning Adventures II-The kids from the cartoon get to cross over with Drizzt! And Minsc and Boo! If you know who those characters are, it's fun to see them interact.

Elvira Meets HP Lovecraft-I've actually been enjoying a lot of the Elvira comics, lately. They're tongue and cheek, with a lot of that "classic" "classy" humor. They're better than you'd expect. Try out some of them sometime.

I Heart Skull Crusher-This just started, but I really like the vibe. A girl is trying to get a team together so she can compete in a brutal sport in a post-apocalyptic world.

Gargoyles Quest-I can't blame you if you aren't following the Gargoyles comics. Greg Weisman seems to have problems pacing his writing for the comic book medium. But, this is the start of Demona trying to gather the new Three Keys to Power. It should be more exciting than the court trial we got last volume.

The Last Mermaid-A mermaid tries to survive a post-apocalyptic world in a mech suit. This is mostly recommended for the art, but it's VERY nice art. It also reads VERY quickly.

Radiant Black-Deciding to release two versions of every issue where the main character is different is sure...a choice. I don't know if it's paying off or not. But, it's been VERY interesting to see how the timelines diverged from each other. I still like Rogue Sun better, but the Catalyst War has been interesting, I can't deny that.

I'm not pinning my hopes on any title. I'll just get what I can get.

Don't know the backstory of Spiderboy but I have faith in Slott.

Btw, after reading the Lost Children where 40+ sidekicks appear, I'm disappointed we don't have a title for them. They're just being reinserted in different titles but some are ignored.

Yeah, some of those "new" kids are showing up in JSA, but a lot of just background characters, now.

I'm guessing it was originally a idea Geoff Johns planned to do more with. But, with him basically starting his own comic imprint with Ghost Machine, I don't know if he's going to be doing too much for DC, after his current books are done. At least for the next few years, while he tries to make Ghost Machine books happen. Like Geiger and Redcoat and Rook.

Kind of a shame. But, hopefully, someone decides to do something with those kids.

The Comic store I always go to for Free Comic Book Day, which had cool events and contests and stuff, Closed this past year.

Had my daughters hair cut appointment in the morning so had to do that first. By the time that was done and we had lunch it was afternoon when I hit Newberry Comics in the nearby Mall to try there. They were out of everything except the Marvel Bloodties book. I should have grabbed it, but I was disappointed enough I just left.

Thankfully my wife was cool enough to be up for a drive to the big comic store that was about almost and hour away at that point (we were 30 min from home in the opposite direction). That's where I'll be going first next year: Almost all the books, no limit on how many you can grab, tons of people, big sales and a mini comicon with tables in the space at the back. Ironically the Marvel book was like the only thing they were out of. But then it was like 3:00 in the afternoon by that point so I can't blame them for that.

Got:
Energon Universe (the big want)
Flash Gordon
Johnny Quest
Ninja Turtles

My Daughter Got a handful of the kid aimed books.

And we always buy some comics to support the store on FCD so I grabbed Robo Force #1, The new Harley Quinn annual (not usually a Harley guy but I love Erica Henderson), and an issue of the current Lilo and Stitch book for my daughter.

Wish I'd had more money because they were having great sales.

-ZacWilliam, I guess I'll read the Marvel one when it goes on Marvel Unlimited which they have done in the past.

Detail on From the Ashes X-Factor-
Taking a cue from the group's original concept, Angel and Havok lead a government sanctioned team of mutants to counter the rise of other countries' own mutant strike teams and be the "poster group" of celebrity mutant heroes. Initial line up includes Feral, Frenzy and Pyro
