As Morphin Time draws ever closer, more and more tidbits are coming out about Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Rita's Rewind. Probably the worst kept secret since Day 1 was that yes, Tommy Oliver, the original Green Ranger, would be playable alongside his teammates in this beat 'em up adventure...
Well, at least there's one part of the franchise that's still around the kicking. New Power Rangers comics are still coming out!
I kind of want to give a nod to Ranger Academy. The final issue, issue #12, just came out last week and it concluded things pretty nicely. If you never checked it out, it was a pretty fun, self-contained series. Well worth your time, in my opinion. I'm sure there's a trade paperback collection coming soon, if you prefer that, too.
But, I'm sure most of you are more curious about the brand new continuity that Boom kicked off with Power Rangers Prime #1. A brand new jumping on point for readers!
...Sorta. Because, while this is a brand new continuity, I feel like you kind of need to be pretty familiar with the old one to really understand what's going on. And I'm not just talking about the comics. Because this is drawing from ALL OVER the Power Rangers franchise. There's references to quite a few different series in this issue. So, I feel like you're better off if you know your Aquitians from your Eltarians, if you catch my drift.
I don't know how much I want to spoil outside of spoiler tags, so I'll give you the "high concept" in this paragraph in broad strokes. The pitch is basically: "Aliens took over the Earth 70 years ago, and now Humans are living as second class citizens". This results in the very foundations of this comic feeling a bit more "political" than the main universe, for good or for ill. It kind of feels like a slightly more Orwellian "Police State" version of SPD. There's still moments of light-heartedness and comedy, so it's not completely grimdark. But, this universe does feel a shade darker just because of this decision. But, of course, most of the characters are still in their version of High School, so...it's not THAT dark.
Writing wise, this feels dense in some parts and lighter in others.. They need to introduce a few new characters. Re-introduce a few old characters. And give us a idea of this new world they're building. As a result we don't get very far in this single issue. I honestly doubt that we'll see the whole team formed until issue #6. As of this first issue, none of the characters they introduce really wow or excite me with their personalities alone. I'm not truly invested in their character stories, yet. But, it's early days and that could easily change. The focus of this first issue feels like it's definitely more concerned with world building than character work. And that's fair. It's actually a fairly interesting world they're building here.
Art-wise this issue is...acceptable. The art doesn't blow me away, but I also don't hate it. Not my favorite Power Rangers art in any comic ever, but it's fine. It gets the job done. It's pretty much a average issue, if you've read other issues of Boom's Power Rangers comics.
Overall, this first issue was good. Maybe not "great" for me, but it is solid. I'm more intrigued about what they'll be doing in the future than what this particular issue does alone. This feels like this series could go some interesting places. But, a lot like with "Beyond the Grid", I do worry that it might take a little too long getting there and it won't sell as well as Mighty Morphin usually does. Which means we might not get to see what they may have planned play out. Time will tell. Still, this is a B- level comic for me. I think it's worth checking out, if you want to try something a little different than what Power Rangers usually does.
Okay, right from the jump, I feel like having Lauren from Samurai be one of our main focus Rangers is...a bold choice. Don't get me wrong, I don't hate her. It's just that...she's from Samurai. One of my personally least liked seasons of Power Rangers. And Lauren...was not in enough episodes for me to really care about her as a character. Personally, I just don't get excited when I see Lauren return. But, that's just me.
And right now, in this new universe, it seems like Samurai Rangers were the ONLY past Ranger team on Earth. That's...again...a choice. I don't know, they're just putting a lot of eggs in the Samurai basket. And it feels like a few other teams could have potentially been around, too. Like the Ninja Storm clan. Or the Mystic Force coven. And maybe in future issues they'll do stuff like that. But, for right now, it's ONLY Samurai. And I'm just not sure why?
So, anyway, the "aliens" who took over Earth are the Eltarians, Zordon's race. And they take a lot of design cues from Boom's previous take on the Eltarians circa the Eltarian War. In fact, I'm pretty sure Zartus makes a cameo in the background in this issue.
Mark Zhao is a new character, and is half-Aquitian, who's a refugee from Aquitar since it got destroyed.
Orion from Super Megaforce is also in this issue as Mark's roommate, since his planet has ALSO been destroyed. There seems to be a bit of a recurring theme, here. I guess they're trying to show some love to the Nickelodeon seasons? The problem is...it's pretty rare to find love for the Nick seasons. And these aren't even characters from the shows that people actually like!
Also, Doobie, Mark and Orion's dog and the best character in this comic. There's a non-zero chance that he could end up being a Ranger, too, so I'm listing him.
Jun is a Eltarian who was born on Earth, who has powerful parents who run the school that everyone is going to.
Valentina seems like she's going to end up being our sporty Yellow Ranger eventually, if the headband is any indication. And she's dating Ryan who...I'm not sure if he's supposed to be the Titanium Ranger from Lightspeed Rescue or not? He looks pretty similar, but everyone's in pretty different places right now and it's just not very clear.
And the "bad guys" (other than the occupying Eltarian force, maybe) are the Beast Brigade from Gamma VII (I'm not sure if that's a Master Vile/Gamma Vile reference or not). Honestly, the way this comic is going, I'm not sure if they even exist? I think it might be possibly that this "Beast Brigade" might have been working for the Eltarians the whole time, to give them a excuse to take over Earth.
At any rate, Power Rangers are now considered to be the stuff of myths and legends. Probably erased from history now that the Eltarians took over.
Also, we get a random Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reference. So, the TMNT exist in this universe in one form or another.
Rita Repulsa shows up at the end. With a cute new redesign! She actually looks much younger here. She actually looks a lot like Rita's daughter Selena Repulsa from the recent MMPR Returns comic. Which is probably a good idea, because from the solicitations, I think Rita is going to end up being a good guy in this universe. I think Rita will likely be the one to give the Rangers their powers and act as the "Zordon" for this comic. But, that's all speculation on my part.
But, okay, I've saved the biggest surprise in this issue for last. You're not ready for this. *I* wasn't ready for this. Are you sitting down? I almost feel like this deserves another level of spoiler tags, but I'll resist the urge. Okay...here goes. The VR Troopers make a appearance in this comic book! I'm pretty sure they're going to turn out to be a team of Eltarians. And they get slight redesigns for the comic. But, the the VR Troopers do indeed make a appearance in this comic book. I never in a million years would have guessed that. That kind of made my day. I'm just happy someone remembers these guys.
Honestly, I have to wonder if this opens up the possibility for a few more non-Power Rangers teams making cameos in the future? I know Edenoi from Masked Rider got a nod in a previous Boom comic. But, personally, I'm kind of hoping we get some Beetleborgs up in here. Or at least the Machine Empire "Beetleborgs" from Forever Red, maybe? I really don't think I understand the rights situation for the other non-PR shows. I wasn't even aware it was legally viable to have the VR Troopers make a cameo. This is just neat. I'm glad this happened, and it seems pretty likely we'll be seeing more of the VR Troopers going forward.
So, this comic was a bit of a mixed bag, for me. But, I'm still interested enough to continue with it. I kind of want to see where they're going with this.
And as for the main focus character, I'm guessing they figured they were a good pick, since they're familiar, yet not so familiar that they have much to adhere to, if you get what I mean?
Like, some characters are really well defined over the course of a season or seasons, and others... aren't. So there's arguably more flexibility there. More of a basic template.

I agree here, Its an established character from an established background; but not as deeply establised as others are.
It kinda feels like we're in a mirror verse. Rita might be a good guy, and the zordon of this team; and the Eltarians are the bad guys. Sure they kinda were in the previous continuity but in the main show continuity they never were.
For other teams: Mystic Force could exist but they probably are exclusionary and stick to their mystical realms. As for Ninja Storm, who knows but it feels like they wouldn't work in the open, keeping to the whole "ninja" thing.
As the world prepares itself for the release of G.I. Joe: Wrath of Cobra in mere days, more news has come out about the fate of another video game adventure featuring A Real American Hero. Released in 2020, G.I. Joe: Operation Blackout is a team-based third-person shooter pitting six members of...
