*thread that I normally wouldn't even think twice about has a new post*

"Okay, whatever. I don't really care about...wait a minute! That little icon means I've actually posted in that thread. Why would I ever post in that thread? This must be investigated."

"Oh! That one thing happened that one time."
...
"Alright, moving on."

Just watched the Speed Racer movie with the 4-year-old. That thing is a seriously underrated gem of a film. And then Haywire 3 asked to watch more, so we cracked open the original series, and he's loving it.

...passing an appreciation for the classics on to him makes me so proud!

Even with that answer I still have no idea who this person is.

Literally all I watch on YouTube are like videos about trains, old technology and retrogaming videos, videos about bootleg stuff, and weeb jive.
The Tube of You has become another one of those fragmented "By any chance do you know..." zones.

I remember a few years back some pollster asking if I recognized some other online personality -- I want to say one of the Paul brothers? It was a while ago. I didn't, but then they didn't know of Phillip DeFranco and his YouTube news channel, which I was big on at the time.

Since my surgery a year and a half ago, it's largely been sleep aids, ironically, which is how I came to know of Gibi. Then, as I've mentioned elsewhere on this board, she did a "Let's never sleep again" horror-ASMR bit for Halloween 2021.... sent me down a rabbit-hole of game lore. I think that I'm better now....

Oh, and I've also skimmed Linkara's archives, catch a few stealth-campers doing their things, and follow WholeWheatPete's anime cosplay antics....

I mostly hit YouTube only if I'm looking for something specific. A clip from a show, how-to's, etc. I don't follow anyone but do enjoy HidaMari's baking channel. New recipes and a dash of ASMR.

I am honestly convinced that the vast majority of these YouTubers don't actually exist and we're all just being gaslit to think they do.

It's seriously like every few weeks there's some 'big' drama or controversy and it's always some channel that I have literally never heard of but they allegedly have like millions of subscribers.

Yeah, no I'm calling bullshit. These people don't actually exist, y'all are just making them up.

Youtube is 95% of the time a music player for me. While I don't technically follow anyone, I've found I like how Taliesin does his WoW coverage so I keep an eye on that for WoW lore developments, which makes most most of that other 5%. Well, that and the Kurzgesagt science videos.

"Popular culture" isn't a monolithic structure anymore, is all.

I first noticed the cracks back in the mid-aughts, when 2 million viewers an episode on basic cable made Ron Moore's Battlestar Galactica watercooler-discussion television with critics asking why we aren't all watching this -- while 3 million viewers an episode on a second-tier broadcast network put Enterprise on the deathwatch.

Raw numbers tell one story, the way the sub-media were weighted quite another....

Now that Every Studio Has a Streaming Service and algorithms curate stuff you might like to see (although YouTube seems bad at picking for me -- I watch Eckhartsladder's Star Wars lore and Linkara's descriptions of Frank Miller's descent into madness, how does that translate into wanting to watch assorted bizarre arguments about Old Man Picard being part of a Plot to Destroy Star Trek?), is it any wonder that we have a collection of multimedia bubbles instead of Everyone Watching the Same Late Night Shows as my parents' generation did?

Me: *watches multiple videos about VCRs, the history of VHS and Betamax, the videotape format war of the late 70s and 1980s, and various other videos relating to the topic of home video and its history*

YouTube Algorithm: Ah, we see you like VCRs. Here is a video titled 'Problems with my Panasonic Something or Other VCR Part 2' uploaded by user BigMikethePawPatrolBobtheBuilderVHSFan2006. It has 6 views. Do you like this?

YouTube is primarily a music player for me, but my recommendations are always full of farrier videos.
