I get what they were going for with 06. They just failed. The story is bad and the gameplay is blatantly unfinished, but I can see how someone at some point imagined it was going to be good. It was supposed to be a return to the Adventure formula, with a story someone thought was going to be good.

I don't get what they were going for with Rise of Lyric, and Boom in general. Take out the jank and I don't get what it was supposed to be. I can imagine the one guy who thought the 06 story was going to be good. He's weird but he had a dream. I can't imagine one person thinking Rise of Lyric was going to be good. I can only imagine a committee deciding they were happy enough with the job they did stitching everyone's suggestions together. It's a committee product, and it's boring.

You may test that assumption at your convinience.

Sonic The Hedgehog 3 was released 30 years ago…yesterday. If you have memories of playing it when it was new…then you be OLD.
I actually DO have memory of playing it when it was new. I saw it in the video store, begged my mom to rent it (on top of the thing we were there for.) then I saved my pennies and bought it about a year later from sears.

hug you man, just hug you.

Some corners of the internet seem to be trying to rehabilitate that game's reputation, and I'm wondering if it's genuine or if it's a Morbius situation.
I think it's a little of column A and a little of column B. On the Morbiusness of it, the internet is gonna internet. There's early 2000s nostalgia at play and Shadow is popular. But alternately, there's parts of the story that seem genuinely heartfelt and it's close to officially stated canon path. The game does some quiet worldbuilding that I don't think has been wholly retconned. And it does play in an early 2000s edge that some people are nostalgic for.

From watching a Rise of Lyric playthrough, I think I get it. Especially taking into account the fact that both games suffered from the tragedy of "developer rushed to hit an unreasonable deadline set by the publisher while struggling with hardware specs the game wasn't optimized for". But yeah, it's a Sonic meant to play more like something in the vein of Crash or Spyro. Maybe not what I would suggest but it isn't an unreasonable leap to make for a semi reboot. Rise of Lyric has further weirdness in that it isn't actually canon to the show and thus it isn't canon ot the 3DS games. It's an alternate universe to an alternate universe.

...

Oh wow, 06 and Rise of Lyric truly are dark mirrors of each other.

I thought it was just a Sonic thing, but then I recently had all these people telling me how great the Ride Chaser stages in the later Mega Man X games were, and I just...

I may be misremembering how bad Rise of Lyric was. I've watched like... seven different LPs of 2006 over the years (starting with the original one by Pokecapn and crew) so on top of realizing it seems to be in an active state of suckiness flux where it manifests brand new bugs and flaws every time it's recorded, I'm intimately familiar with its bad story and mediocre formulaic-if-you're-lucky gameplay. Whereas with Rise of Lyric I've actually only ever finished the Game Grumps one, which doesn't even count because they glitched their way past a good chunk of it.

And by the way, a big part of the reason 2006's story and art style are such a mess is that Sega literally handed Sonic Team the assets from a completely different, canceled game and said "Here, use this in your next Sonic game so it doesn't go to waste." (I'm now wondering if Black Knight and Secret Rings exist because they still had a bunch left over.)

Ho boy, it's finally happening--Ken Penders is attemping to reprint Archie Sonic's 25 Years Later arc with minimal edits:
I wonder just how fast he'll get sued.

I mean... I would love an anthology styled hard cover edition.

So... I kinda don't want him getting sued.

If this were to instead get an official reprint, which company would have the rights to do it?

Wait, really? This is new info to me...

I always heard it was a mess because Yuji Naka jumped ship midway, and they cut the team in half to work on Sonic and the Secret Rings, and wouldn't allot them any additional budget/time to get it done.

Oh, and something about a demo that fixed some issues, but was somehow too late to be incorporated into the actual game without screwing things up or something.

Oh, all that happened too. The reason the finished product feels like the result of everything going wrong that could go wrong, is because it more or less did!

So, uh... are the bad guys in this just some people they made up for this, or...?

Ah, casino zone confirmed. I also like the fact that the show is playing with the structure of the live action universe in using the quills as power sources. It provides a possibility of how a Space Colony Ark could work if it exists in the 3rd movie.

Well its not like they can use any of Knuckle's villians from elsewhere... thanks Penders.

They could have used Fang but that would increased the amount of CGI when they're probably reserving some for the 3rd movie. Well, that and the fact that different lore means less reason Fang and Knuckles would have a reason to interact.
