Studio Series discussion

They should’ve bumped the Dramatic Capture price up to an even $100 and remolded Prowl his actual head so at least that would be there next time Hasbro deigns to release one.

It’s not the big panels, or the mismatching colors…it’s that they didn’t do anything with the god damn doors hanging off him.

Remember when we complained about Hasbro livening up the colors on the AOE Dinobot toys? We were so silly.
I tend to be easy on Hasbro because fandom as a whole can't be pleased. Liven up a bunch of gunmetal and silver Baybots? Not screen accurate. Given them screen accurate colour schemes? Too boring.

I had this discussion just last night actually. Someone was lamenting that we don't get original toyline characters anymore. And I agree. I miss those guys!
But I get Hasbro's reluctance. Remember Energon Tow-Line? Everyone loved that toy... but wished it got repainted as Ironhide and Ratchet, and got mad when those versions were limited to BotCon exclusives. So from Hasbro's perspective... design original toyline characters and get chided by the fans who want those moulds redone as "classic" characters. Commit to classic characters and fans lament that absence of original characters. So if fandom will complain anyway... might as well go with who's more marketable?

I wanna state that I'm not criticizing anyone of hypocrisy here. Fandom is not a monolith and it's very likely that the people who complained when the Bayverse Dinobots were livened up colourwise were not the people complaining when everything got screen accurate grey and darker grey colours. Likewise people who want more Energon Tow-Lines in the world aren't the people complaining when those characters aren't redone as classic characters.
Just pointing out that EVERYONE in the fandom is a potential consumer to Hasbro, and they have to find a way make everyone who holds all of these contradictory opinions, and the ones in between, happy to some extent.

We get original guys. All the new Junkions, the Armorizers, The Terrans in Earthspark, Rescuebots who are starting to see some Generations love, and depending on your definiton, Xarron and Flame might count, they're old comic characters but they're original comic characters that never had toys before. The Micromaster bases might also count. Scrapface from Netflix line.

Also, TBF with Energon Tow-Line, its not that the dude was a Van. It was a Van where half of him was the robot and the other was a battle platform. That is very inspired by the G1 toys for Ratchet and Ironhide. I don't know how you wouldn't think fans would want him done up as them. That was something cool and hadn't been done in a long time or sense really.

I am one fan who is down for new character toys, but I am also a big fan of characters with shared body types; I like the Seekers, the Super Datsun Bros., the Bee/Cliffjumper minibots, etc. Budget permitting, I would love molds in as many color combinations as possible, and if some of those are new characters (or throwbacks to old characters on new body types), then all the better!
In the case of Energon Tow Line, I love the mold, and it also makes a great Ironhide (the Ratchet version was too unobtainable for me), but it would have been cool in other colors as new characters as well!

They're reasonable enough. But it is difficult to commit without knowing if the others are going to have painted windows.

Man, do I need another Devestator? I got a good deal on a used Titan class Devy a while back. I'd love to see a good side-by-side comparison, but it sounds like there will be a very small window to decide to order these.

I'm thinking this is going to be one of the rare sets where I try and get 2 of each. I think these will sell very well in a few years. And the way my retirement is shaping up, i'll need the help.

No trumpets...
They did remark that the Commander Class two pack will have stuff to ”fill out” the offering, so hope remains.

As I’ve aged and my collecting tastes have shifted…I’m not sure i need a full blown Devastator, between cost and size concerns. And from what I’m seeing, both are still being fairly heavily compromised for the sake of the combined mode, not dissimilar to the old Titan.

I might just settle on Scrapper and Mixmaster, as those two were actual developed characters I actually have an interest in. But had i gotten the old Titan set? I’m REALLY not sure these represent THAT meaningful a step up aside from just being “bigger”.

I'd be more impressed if I didn't have the UW set. There's some things I like better here, including the size, but with the way prices have gone I'm not sure this is even cheaper despite being smaller.

He looks like a refined CW/UW Devastator but it's doing that thing I don't like where the treads form part of the torso and the chestshield covers all of them, making his chest look extra wide and his head look even smaller. The extra parts to form Devastator andthe way those hips look makes me wary.

Shame about Scrapper's striped briefs.

On the one hand, I'll probably regret not buying these Constructicons if I get the chance. They are likely to be THE hot ticket from Studio Series in the coming year.

On the other hand, I have a set of original Constructicons, as well as a couple different knockoffs, and the Energon Constructicons that pretty well scratch the Devastator itch? (They scale better with Gobots, anyway)

I may change my mind between now and when these hit stores (the Commander set would have to be an online order, at the very least, anyway) but I kinda think I can pass on these at the moment. Which is weird, because I bought a lot of the CW figures (but not Devastator), even though I was trying to focus on the Legion-scale figures at the time. Now, I buy a lot more larger figures again, but for some reason the Constructicons are not tracking as needs in my mind.

Re: Downscaled CW Devastator knockoff

That thing is flimsy as hell. People criticize Hasbro for their thin plastic pieces which isn’t entirely without reason. Now imagine that plastic half as thin.

It’ll work if you just stand him there I guess but at that point, just print out a photo of the UW release.
