Oh, I think they definitely WANT a payoff. It's just the way that WB does business these day, the executives might decide to just make it all a tax write off and scrap the whole thing. That's what I'm worried about.
Batgirl was one thing, but Superman (Legacy) seems to have a lot of excitement and hype the likes of which a non-Batman DC movie hasn't had in some time. Additionally, Batgirl was scraped before a proper trailer was ever done up for it.

At this point the more profitable move from WBD is to just settle out of courts to make the plaintiffs go away and rake in the good will and (especially) cash this movie will bring in.

It's sad that the family (families?) have to keep going back to this. Looks like there've been ownership disputes going back to the 1940s, though. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copyright_lawsuits_by_Superman's_creators)

I'm looking forward to this movie, though. I've always been more of a Marvel guy than a DC guy (except for the Arrowverse shows), so I imagine there's a lot I won't catch the first time around, but still, I really want to see it.

The guitar theme in the trailer really hits me hard, too. Not sure why, but it's a crazy visceral, almost in tears reaction. There's so much hope or something at a really deep level, and I can't quite put it into words.

And I think the biggest difference is the SCOPE of the projects. Batgirl, for all the interest, was being developed for HBO Max as a streaming film. Acme vs Coyote was a mid-range comedy.
Superman 25 was developed as a massive tentpole event with a massively higher budget and exposure level.

WBD will throw some money at the Shuster Family to get them to go away. At worst, barring a legal injunction, WBD will push the film out anyway while this makes its way through the assorted courts. The fact this is being done OUTSIDE the US says to me this is a money grab, and we’ll see how it plays out.

I thought they sorted this already?

Why didn't they say anything about any of the others released in the last two decades?

Or anything with all the other cartoons, TV shows, comics, games, action figures, etc. that have been released?

Look, I'm not one to side with a big corporation unless they really seem like they're in the right on something, but this is just getting annoying.

It was…in the US. The suit(s) are being filed in international courts like Canada and Australia and Ireland. That’s a big reason I think it’s somebody associated with the Shuster estate eye-balling a quick settlement for some easy money.
