More Chaos! Less paint...

Looted Dark Elder whatever-this-is! The usual Rhinos and Land Raiders didn't seem thematic enough.

A Marine that's actually a puppet for some unseen cephalopod. An early idea was to make an entire squad like this, but that felt like overkill.

Feels weird being considered the "painting guy" at my local game store. Though I guess it's not undeserved since I regularly teach painting basics.

i miss specialist games. i got into GW games with Battlefleet Gothic and loved the look of old necromunda and mordheim models even if i only ever got to play Mordheim.

I mean, specialist games aren't exactly extinct.
We've got the new version of Necromunda, Underworlds, Blood Bowl, Aeronautica Imperialis and Adeptus Titanicus.

Heads up for any unaware, the Armageddon Steel Legion kit is now a Last Chance to Buy for the next two weeks before the kit gets retired.

with the new heroquest games arrival looming, what is a good set of paints to use for these kinds of figures? ive found several on amazon (one even comes with a mini minsc and boo from baldurs gate!), and i already have a lot of the appel barrel stuff that you can get at walmart. would those work well? or should i look into one of the kits on amazon?

Speaking from experience, you can use craft paint like Apple Barrel but for most things I wouldn't recommend it. The Reaper set listed come with a brush but the Vallejo set comes with a better selection of paints. Also, for reference the official D&D paints sets are generally rebrands of paints from The Army Painter. If you are genuinely interested in starting, I'd say get the Vallejo set. That specific Reaper set lacks a red which feels like a non starter and you can easily buy brushes. In fact, you probably already have some since you've got Apple Barrel. I'd say starting out, get some army men from the dollar store and use those to practice before trying to paint your game figures. Starting out, you mainly need to learn how to properly prime and brush control. So if you don't have it, you'll want a can of spray primer.

oh this isnt my first rodeo with paint. ive painted tons of tfs over the years. i just wanted to know what kind of paint is the best to use for this specific kind of thing, as ive never painted miniatures before.

thanks for the help (y)

There's a bit of a difference between painting bigger figures like Transformers and miniatures.
First and foremost, you aren't going to need nearly as much paint as you think you are and apply it as thinly as possible to avoid detail loss.

thats kinda why i want to get one or two of those reaper sets. i can practice on those guys before i tackle the actual hq ones. and like i said, i can use those as special heroes or villains in the game, assuming i dont screw them up!

You will screw up. You have to allow yourself that. The important part is to just keep moving forward and getting better with each one you do.

Case in point, my first miniature:

yea also perfection is the enemy of done. sometime its best to just walk away from a mini then try and be super fancy with it. Those reaper kits have a how to guide in them to help you muddle through the first couple tries, and the reaper youtube has a bunch of teaching videos on it.

after much searching, i finally ordered a few kits. a couple dnd ones, a reaper one and the vallejo one (both of these were the ones posted). ill have 4 minis to practice on until hq arrives. and best i can tell, theres no color doubles (couldnt read what was in the vallejo set, other than basic colors). ill look into that reaper youtube channel (subscribed to it but havent watched anything), and ill try to keep everyones advice in mind.

wish me luck!!

another good channel is midwinter minis. its more 40k focused but the lessons are useful regardless what your painting.

Edit: this video popped up in my YouTube feed overnight and seems related to your exact project telly.

Duncan Rhodes Painting Academy is a better channel for just tips on painting.

Midwinter's never been a favorite channel of mine, just rubs me the wrong way and a lot of his videos can be unrelated nonsense from what you're looking for.

For an absolute beginner, I think some of Duncan's stuff from when he was still doing Warhammer TV is slightly better than his personal channel. But on the topic of Midwinter Minis...

I like a lot of his stuff and have learned from some of it. However, he does have a ton of videos that are more focused on Warhammer nostalgia than painting minis. Also, has that problem of "look at this sponsor!!!" that a lot of the YouTube channel hosts that have made it their job fall into. What I feel is one of the best vids for what Telly needs is this:

It's painting something for a box and uses that Vallejo set. Teaches cleaning your models, zenithal priming, paint thinning, washes, basic highlights, and basing. I'd say the first seven LotR videos are a good progression from painting the nobodies through the heroes with occasionally adding new colors or techniques. On the whole, his video categories (Zombicide, Star Wars, etc) have the first video in that category as a good primer for how he will be approaching things for painting that game and is a nice place to start overall. Another major thing is that Sorastro is trying to make the mini the star instead of himself, avoiding an annoyance I have with a lot of YouTube (not just miniature hobbists). He is rarely in the video or the thumbnail. Though an intriguing similarity to Midwinter Minis is that he comes from a music background and makes his own music for his videos.
