Paramount has dropped the trailer for the new Naked Gun film from producer Seth MacFarlane and director Akiva Schaffer (director of Hot Rod, Popstar, and Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers). The pedigree is strong, and Liam Neeson seems fully committed.

This is going to suck, but Liam Neeson will be great.

It’s one of those things that, like Leslie Nielson or Adam Driver, those talented dramatic actors have a hell of a knack for comedy. And it’s not like Neeson hasn’t been game for comedy in the past, like his Good Cop/Bad Cop role in The Lego Movie and his Clash of Clans commercials. This feels very much like Neeson is aware of his “persona” and is MORE than happy to take the piss out of it.
Even if the movie sucks, I believe it will not be because of Liam Neeson’s performance.
Neeson feels like the best choice one could do for this movie, since he's still mostly known for being a dramatic actor. Even if he's done some comedy, and done it well; it keeps in Nelson's footprints of getting a serious, or relatively serious, actor to do comedy.
And he never looked better. Movie looks like silly fun. We'll see!

Anyway, yeah, he did it quite well here.
It's a nuanced form of comedy that isn't comedy at all, but makes comedy when it is all put together. I think the story here is really just Liam Neeson's willingness to do it. I don't see how it is a special talent on top of his dramatic acting. He just has to do what he always does. The writers and the costumers and other actors make him funny.
Dunno why people like that Nordberg joke , it's just the black Russian joke from Naked Gun 2.

Basically, unlike that scene, this one seems to have all the new guys mourning their dead fathers. Then we get to Nordberg's son(?), who looks at the camera and is like "Nah, I'm good."
This is because Nordberg in the originals was portrayed by one Orenthal James Simpson, a popular celebrity football player of the day who would go on to stand trial in 1995, accused of murdering his ex-wife and possible significant other in a double-murder that tarnished his name and was put on trial in a court case that lasted eight months, with people around the world (or at least the US) tuning in to see what would happen. It was practically pop culture and on everyone's lips at the time.
Orenthal, or "OJ," was acquitted, and I do believe that result was/is considered quite controversial, and Simpson never regained the same fame he had one enjoyed afterward.
Hence the "Nah, I'm not crying over him" bit.

Yes I get the context and OJ's history is well known, he's infamous for being a suspect for murders, the tasteless book 'If I did it' that was cancelled and then the armed robbery and kidnapping, but the joke is recycled and if that's the best they got that they thought was good for a teaser then it's a red flag to me.
The other red flag for me is Neeson who looks like he's smirking in the teaser whereas Nielson always played it straight.

At least they addressed the Nordberg issue. They could have went the other way and referenced the random white guy that played him in the TV series.
