Somehow, I preferred this series when it was basically anime Family Guy-style reference humor than when it devolved into boring harem nonsense.

Hayate no Gotoku or Hayate the Combat Butler. The first series is generally wacky comedy whose staff really, really liked super robot and mecha anime. It's pretty surprising how many Transformers references there are in it considering Transformers' relative lack of popularity in Japan. It's about the only time I watched filler because the first series is all filler. It's not great but at least it's fairly entertaining and the writers and animators evidently love giant robots as much as I do.

The sequel series devolves into generic romance-comedy garbage where about a dozen girls fawn all over the oblivious protagonist and the main plot about the ancient butler civilization or whatever. It's not really worth watching.

To be honest, I was onboard until they started taking it seriously. The first part is so goofy and flippant that the story is just something to move the characters into the next joke. When the overarching plot started taking precedence and the tone shifted to a romantic comedy, it just stands out as exceedingly stupid.

This is inaccurate. The MP-01 mold doesn't have seating for mini-figures.

Only on the technicality that there were none made to fit in seat his cab section has when in truck mode!

I disagree, it has the proportionally small octagonal windows, the seam in the middle of the windows to open the matrix compartment, the windshield overhang, the small rectangular joint at the bottom of the grill, the usual Optimus bumper detail compressed towards the middle section and the headlights that were just clear plastic circles embedded in the truck face.
