The Elongated Muskrat sticks his nose into so many things that he keeps popping up everywhere, especially after he made himself King Twit. But it still might make more sense to have one primary thread about what's going on, and maybe to move most of the Twitter-related posts from the last few pages of the Conspiracy thread to this one?

And yeah, all the major infosec folks I follow because they know their jive were already out of there at the start of the week, and the Infosec instance I'm on specifically for that stuff blew up so fast the owner had to update limit settings multiple times, as well as eventually move to an actual 4 server setup, after running fine on what it had been for about the past 5 years.

And one last thought on Musk himself: his previous businesses benefitted from government subsidies. Twitter does not. Perhaps the only reason his other ventures survived is due to said subsidies?

Here's a thread I stumbled across yesterday from a former employee (not one of the ones who worked there recently), detailing an incident where a shady company tried to pressure them into logging and selling everything their users did. Like, every single thing their phone was capable of tracking. I have no doubt there are dozens, maybe hundreds, of mobile apps that actually took the offer, and that you'll never know which ones they are (well, OK, it's a safe bet that Facebook and Instagram are among them), so the real interesting bit to me was that, prior to the huge bump in popularity it got from the Trump campaign in particular, Twitter was on the verge of going under. Entirely. There is an alternate universe where we are not having this conversation right now because Twitter already folded years ago.

Elon has always been less of a businessman and more a cult of personality. Nice to see that finally on display.
Now, that said . . . .

I hate Twitter and what it's done for the reactionary nature of politics here in America. But we can't just ignore the good it's done worldwide in fostering communication and assisting the oppressed in working to overthrow tyrants. Would places like Iran love to see Twitter disappear? Certainly.

But, you can't put the cat back in the bag. There are too many other services and up and comings that do what Twitter does. Right now they're all smaller due, in part, to Twitter itself being the big dog in the room. But once its gone, something will take its place. We can't go back to an unconnected world.

So, what's the point in destroying Twitter? Where's the net positive for any figure that wants it gone, with the understanding that its inevitable successor is already waiting in the wings?

Aside from losing faraway friends you wouldn't be able to connect with on a regular basis, the downside to the fall of Twitter is in the creative community. Artists and video producers and other content makers have been using social media as a conduit for their work for a long time. If they have to try and rebuild a brand elsewhere it will take tremendous effort and probably severe financial strain.

I use Discord a lot; I'm trying out that Mastadon thing but I think we won't know the true successor to Twitter until someone decides which other social media platform is the best one for the porn.

He is also on friendly terms with the second-in-command of the Communist Party of China (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Li_Qiang) in that they worked together to set up the Tesla factory in Shanghai. This is btw the same person who turned Shanghai into a prison camp for two months in 2022. Apparently his new exploitative labor policies at Twitter (https://in.mashable.com/tech/41057/...-at-twitter-work-12-hours-a-day-7-days-a-week) are based on copying China's equally horrible labor practices (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/996_working_hour_system)

Elon is running Twitter exactly how I would expect its average user would, honestly: assuming that it's already such a hellsite that nothing anyone could do would make it any worse.
