I'd actually be shocked to discover that he's spending his own money on a Tesla.
I'd be shocked to see him slumming it in anything smaller than a limo, either. I don't know what the turnaround time would be to develop their own version of The Beast, but obviously I wouldn't be opposed to them rushing it and churning out something that barely works and ends up spontaneously combusting on the road.
If he's inside it, I see no downside.
Nothing of value would be lost.
Much of value would, in fact, be gained. It'd take out Trump and what's left of Tesla's reputation in a single moment, not to mention lead to a lot of suspicion that Musk set it up on purpose to get rid of the only person still above him in the pecking order.

No, we made Nazis illegal in Germany when we briefly took away their right to self-govern and took control in their stead. And then we refused to give it back unless they agreed to keep that rule in particular. It's an important distinction that has serious implications for our future if indeed we're lucky enough to have one.
