Yeah, this is literally the point. They took a lie to a favourable extremist court and opened the door to enshrining bigotry into law.

tbh it's not a stupid decision. "stupid" implies they don't know what they're doing, and they know exactly what they're doing.

the cruelty is the point, as it's always been for christians since constantine.

Oh no, it's not stupid. It's a master stroke of manufacture, patience and deliberate, malicious cruelty. But it's not stupid. They've waited a VERY long time to do these things.

With any luck the court will reject said map and appoint a commission to draw a new one, as per the original ruling.

It didn't hit the stated requirements: the court basically has to. I hope they also tack on something to punish the people who deliberately didn't do what they were told to do.

I wonder how far they'l take this. Like, what happens if the fighting continues so long that there's still not an approved map by next year's election? No doubt the state will try to run its elections as if their bogus map were legit, so then what? I assume it's the job of the current Congress to handle the transfer of power, and does anyone really have the guts to deny access to...well, pretty much all seven representatives-elect on the grounds that none of their districts, as far as the Court is concerned, exist?

If they were Democrats, the GOP would fight it on exactly those terms. Of course, they won't be, and if the Democrats try to fight on those grounds, the GOP will raise hell about it.

Absolute bullshit.

The Founders were not big on unaccountable branches of government that operated with no oversight. Nor should they have been.

Congress has also shrank and enlarged the Court so they definitely have some say over how it operates.

An ethics code is literally the lowest of bars and this asshole chafes at even that…

Maybe it's time to start impeaching court members then. I know fat chance of that happening with the current congress, but it IS specifically allowed by the US constitution.

Alright, so, the supreme court is catching some flak for not abiding by jack smiths expedited request. To basically every legal professional: this is open and shut. It's a quick, simple, even an easy ruling.

But... it just occurred to me that it isn't. It's actually a charlie foxtrot wrapped in common sense.

If the supreme court finds in favour of colorado: It upholds the states right screams coming from the cultists, but it also undercuts the supreme courts power as the final word. It also opens up the pathway for red states to forever bar anyone with a "D" on their resume from every running in those red states because they WILL prevent them from running. Functionally preventing the 2024 election from being winnable by anyone. Places like texas, florida, georgia, the deepest red states will pull biden from the ballot and all the while applauding the supreme court for finally doing the "right" thing. But at the same time it allows hesitant blue states to pull trump. Sure, the primary could always go to another republican: but none of them can win.

If they find AGAINST colorado: it'll basically completely undercut the courts power anyway. 60 some percent of the country will call for removal, and the court as it stands will no longer be trusted to make rulings since they're obviously in trumps pocket. It'll cause a serious upheaval in the american judicial system, and support in that has never been good for most of the population. Red states will functionally get the approval to go ahead and do literally whatever the hug they want since the bar is now literally attempting to overthrow the government.

No matter what happens: the court won't be trusted going forward by one side or the other. It's going to be a rough start to the new year.

Arguably the only thing holding them back from doing so is the fact that such a ruling would ensure their being surplus to requirements.
