It's very likely that his announcement on Tuesday is going to be a 2024 run at the Presidency just to avoid all these law suits.

Well, he very probably thinks that's how it will work, but it isn't. You have to actually be President to fall under that 'can't prosecute a sitting President' thing*.

(*And even that doctrine has never faced a serious legal challenge. Considering that it only exists in the form of a memo from the WH Office of Legal Council from the Nixon administration, there's nothing that says it would survive a well-founded case against it [of course the current right-wing hack SCOTUS would be happy to apply their double standards to it, sound legal arguments notwithstanding])

Closer than ever before, longer than any of us want. Probably no charges until the stupid assed Special Master finishes their work. Probably several months until charges get filed. Hope it's sooner.

"Trump’s demands were part of a broader pattern of him trying to use the Justice Department and his authority as president against people who had been critical of him, including seeking to revoke the security clearances of former top intelligence officials," the report said.

Trump had frequently complained about people like John Brennan, who he said shouldn't have any kind of security clearance while giving interviews on cable. Trump also wanted to go after Andrew McCabe, who Trump decided he hated because McCabe's wife was running for a local office in Virginia and was a Hillary Clinton supporter. Trump also tried to go after former FBI Director James Comey, who Trump raged about frequently on Twitter. Both McCabe and Comey experienced incredibly invasive audits in 2019, after Kelly was gone.

“The U.S. government, whether it’s the I.R.S. or the Justice Department, should never be weaponized or used to retaliate, and certainly not because someone criticizes you in the press or is your political opponent,” Kelly said when asked about it by the Times. “The average federal employee or F.B.I. agent or I.R.S. agent goes to work and executes the laws and regulations and shouldn’t be put in this position.”

As expected, he's announced he's running for president. Though not before a 20 minute rambling speech about how his presidency was a golden age and everything under Joe Biden has been terrible.

This is a pathetic attempt to stave off prosecution and the massive amounts of lawsuits he's facing. Given his age and health, this feels like Trump is trying to run out the clock on himself. Die in office a Caesar as opposed to an outcast living in exile in his private purgatory of Mar A Largo.

Let's not forget the best part.

Fox and CNN dropped coverage mid-speech because he was so bad at it. MSNBC didn't even bother.

Also, I love this line from the article:

Dan Pfeifer, a former senior adviser to Barack Obama, tweeted: “This speech is Trump’s message delivered with Jeb Bush’s energy and Ted Cruz’s charisma.”

Unfortunately that just means they've already moved on to the "replace him with someone just as evil but actually competent" phase of the long-term plan.

Why in the world are campaign speeches exempt from fact checking..... Politicians should be fact checked harder than pretty much anyone else.

wonko the sane?

You may test that assumption at your convinience.
Citizen
Cause fact checked politicians are unemployed politicians, and unemployed politicians don't push massive tax cuts for corporations.
