People said the same thing about the Tea Party movement years ago. Brand loyalty is trained into Americans from a young age, and First Past The Post is an extremely strong effect on top of that - the Dems should realisticly be 2-3 different parties, but only hang together because of FPTP making it the only way to get things done. The Republican party may just end up in a similar situation with Trumpists and traditional Conservatives only tolerating each other long enough for elections and specific things they can agree on.
