Yeah, check the quebec thread. They're actually going to do it this time, and there's nothing stopping them.

"Quebexit" doesn't quite fit; it sounds like what they're aiming for is something more akin to where the UK was before Brexit: all the benefits of belonging to the federation on top of having no responsibilities to it.

And Canada would rather have this arrangement than let them go entirely because why?

Oh, and like half of current canadian history is in this province, including the ******* founding of the nation, and half of the people involved.

I would also like to point out that there's a nice thread already dedicated to that subject, and return everyones attention to the shithole that britain has become.

"Immigrants caused the collapse of the Roman Empire!", says the leader of the first nation the Roman Empire abandoned as it grew too large to rule effectively, and thus moved its capital eastward and left the west managed by increasingly inept stewards who through circumstances both fully within their abilities to deal with (aggressive taxation and exploitation) and those that weren't (bad harvests brought on by a climate shift) resulted in the breakdown of central authority until regional governors had direct control of their territories, resulting in the rise of feudalism.

The total collapse of the Roman Empire didn't happen until 1204, when the Crusader forces ended up sucked into typical Imperial politics that led to the effective dissolution of the Empire, the death of no less than three Emperors, and resulting in the entire region falling to the Ottomans some two hundred years later.

The UK made a free trade agreement with Canada last year, November I believe.

That’s the problem with all of this – Britain already had trade deals with many of these countries as part of the EU. And outside the EU, we’re getting shittier trade deals than we had via the bulk-bought EU deals, also while leaving us much more vulnerable to predatory action by larger economies like America and China.

If people haven't been following politics in the UK, things have been happening. Everyone is mad at Boris Johnson because it turned out the Tories were holding Christmas parties last year in violation of the covid rules of the time.

The raging storm has resulted in the Tories losing a by-election today in North Shropshire to the Liberal Democrats. The electorate has been held by the Tories since 1832, and the Tories won it by 23,000 votes in the previous election in 2019, so this is a pretty massive disaster for them.

I'm guessing that's the equivalent of a special election? A pop-up election to fill a sudden vacancy?

Yeah, the previous Member of Parliament for North Shropshire resigned, so they had to elect a new MP to represent the electorate.

Said MP was Owen Paterson, who resigned after it came out that he had been breaching rules around paid advocacy - basically he had been working as a consultant for a number of companies and had used his position as a member of parliament to help those companies. E.G. he worked for healthcare company Randox, which was awarded a contract to produce covid testing kits without any other companies being given a chance.

In America, that would just be called "a regular Tuesday for 90% of Congress".
