Also won't stop theft. They'll just break the glass. Walmart s are so understaffed, it would probably be an hour before anyone even notices.

More likely someone would break the locks. Much less noise, no debris, no sharp glass to cut themselves on. And unless the store puts a camera down each and every aisle, it'll take far longer to discover.

Can you believe there are people who think China is still "communist"?

. . . . I've seen a lot of bathroom destruction as both a corrections officer and security guard.
If that comes to America, I'm gonna be a lot more understanding.

I'm genuinely surprised that the U.S. wasn't the first to think of that. Or wasn't the first to implement it, at least.

Officially they are, and the Chinese Communist Party claims to be Marxist-Leninist. Their justification is that China needs economic development in order to transition over the long term from capitalism to socialism, and that one-party authoritarian rule (including stamping down on individual and workers’ rights) is required to direct that economic development in a globally competitive manner.

(My opinion? It all just looks like state-capitalism in weak Marxist-Leninist cosplay to me.)

That's exactly what it is. They morphed from from authoritarian-socialist to authoritarian-capitalist over the past 40 years.

FB friend:
I saw somebody recently say that billionaires actually do negative work because so many people work so many hours to serve them, far in excess of the billionaire's own lifetime hours worked (if indeed the billionaire has any lifetime hours worked at all), and that's true even if you assume the billionaire is so productive that an hour of their time is worth ten times a regular person's time.

This particular method of accounting for a billionaire's contribution to society is interesting, but I doubt it will catch on. For some reason, people love the idea that billionaires contribute enormously to our economy.

. . . you know, a healthcare CEO was just gunned down on the street. maybe someone should tell the Powers That Be at Blue Cross that now might not be the best time?

Not that I'm advocating violence. . . . .
I take that back. I'll advocate for violence against healthcare insurance CEOs and their ilk. Too many have died directly because of their slavish devotion to the bottom line. hug em all.

wonko the sane?

You may test that assumption at your convinience.

I heard that someone got gunned down in new york today. Which, in and of itself making the news was wild enough, but I had missed the victim. Mom told me it was "some healthcare ceo".

And all I could say was "good".

The article above about anesthesia happened last month so it wasn't a case of "Not reading the room" this time, just another straw on the haybale.

Fair enough. Good luck to the CEO and the board now that the idea has been put into public consciousness.

In a "you can't make this up" moment, the company's stock price shot up after the news broke.

It turns out your CEO being gunned down is good for the company. Who knew?

Makes perfect sense to me. The CEO people hated enough to murder is now dead and will be replaced with someone else, which can only be positive news for the company's reputation.

It's bots. Company is in the news and none of the headlines seem to indicate that the company did something wrong, bots start buying and the stock price goes up.

So this is fun:

Detectives recovered live rounds and shell casings inscribed with the words “deny”, “depose” and “defend” from the scene where the gunman shot Mr Thompson several times before fleeing, The New York Post reported.

The NYPD is said to be investigating the possible message, which bears a striking resemblance to the title of a 2010 book on “why insurance companies don’t pay claims and what you can do about it”, called Delay, Deny, Defend.
