The Australian that brought it to my attention is concerned that this is basically a "digital id" law in disguise - given the condition that Austalians aren't giving their personal info to the company themselves for the age verificfation, that it'll instead force all Australians to have a unified national digital ID that then gets directly linked to all their accounts online.
Even setting that aside, stuff like the Fediverse would make this impossible to enforce, but they could have a "size" measure... though I don't know how that would interact with the Fediverse as it's technically not one service, just a bunch of individual services that talk to each other.

And they'll continue to go after what ever app everyone migrates to, because they don't control those apps. You cannot go from zero to full censorship in this day and age and expect people, even the most egotistical and oblivious people, to not notice.
Honestly, I’m very dubious about that stuff on RedNote. Remember China is an actual dictatorship. Most of their population are sub-Saharan Africa poor, basic workers’ rights are nonexistent, and no, they don’t have universal healthcare. All these posts from Chinese people reassuring westerners that their quality of life is actually really good… No, that’s propaganda.
Or at least, it's true for the posters' social class and location, not necessarily the country as a whole.
