Anxiety is an emotion according to the American Psychological Association.

Boredom is.. iffy, but more and more it is being classified as an emotion.
Okay.

How many emotions does APA recognize and do we need that many chairs in the control room? Anxiety is distiguishable from fear, but it can fit under an umbrella. It is fear not attached to an explicit focus.

Boredom in real life is a craving for stimulation. Ennui in the movie is a stereotypical sullen teenager.

Edit -

So APA recognizes 6 basic emotions. The ones from the first movie and Surprise. The rest would be distinguishable and nameable, but blends of the basics.

It's a bit nitpicky on that. Just like anxiety and envy aren't exactly limited to teenagers and adults. Still their depiction of anxiety is VERY close to my experiences with it, to the point where I was holding back tears in the theater during the panic attack segment.

Ennui isn't really boredom, it's more like nihilism or edginess. Or that particular hipstery type of "coolness" that's entirely based on being better than those "gullible sheeple" that actually experience happiness.

(So yeah, it makes sense that it's a teenage emotion and isn't present in adults or children.)

It was taught to me in French class as the French word for boredom, but I do see on Google that this was reductive.

I did find it a little hard to swallow that Riley wasn't capable of envy or embarrassment until now.

I was capable of embarrassment in kindergarten, so yea the idea of those being teenage emotions are a bit off. They just tend to be amped up during the teenage years, all emotions tend to be until the brain gets used to the new hormonal balance.

Again, these characters should have been presented as having their own correct place and anxiety just led them to go take over the control room as often happens around this age.
