Wait, I thought the postal service was obligated by law to break even. How could it be getting away with billions in losses?

USPS was completely self-sustaining until 2006, when Congress inexplicably began requiring it to pre-fund retirement health benefits for all of its eligible employees and retirees, 75 years in advance. This unprecedented requirement cost USPS more than $5 billion per year for 16 years … which is almost exactly the amount they were in debt.

It was entirely explicable; the Republicans really didn't like the fact that a government service was operating in the black, because that runs counter to their 'everything the government does costs too much money and should be privatized' ethos, thus their actions to make the Postal Service bleed money.

Right, but I thought that was a scheme to make them fail their mandate to stay in the black. Was there never one in the first place? Were they just that good at keeping their expenses down?

And 100% of the people who voted for Jordan would probably just as gladly promote that guy to be Speaker.
