It was a campaign yard sign. It had 2 words. Narcissist and underneath Socialist with a check mark by the Narcissist box.

I think it is. They're saying "Yes, Trump has a personality problem, but Harris has a world-destroying policy problem and I can't fear his problem worse than hers".

There is a meme probably from Russia going around Facebook that quotes Kevin Sorbo saying something like (and apparently it has been debunked that he said it or no source can be found anyway) "If your hatred for one man is greater than your love for you country, that's a real problem". It is the same mechanism as the yard sign. It separates out the problems with Trump and acknowledges one to make it seem like that is all there is and make the rest disappear. GOP strategists and foreign bots are perfectly willing to have people acknowledge that Trump is a narcissist if it can be built into the argument that him being a narcissist is a flaw that is irritating, but not harmful. It dismisses both that his narcissism has and can again cause other problems AND that he has problems that are probably unrelated to his narcissism. Like the "Kevin Sorbo" quote that asks us to acknowledge that Trump was actually good for the country, we just didn't LIKE him. Another version is "Donald Trump isn't running to be my pastor. He's running for President", meaning "Yes, he's got a serious moral problem, but it is irrelevant to the important issue".
Except morality is not irrelevant to the presidency. It's literally just normalizing the concept that trump is a psychopath, and trump is currently and actively trying to normalize the word "weird" so that it's not an effective tool to use against him.

That was my point. But it is effective in argument to concede what you can make sound like an important detail while you slide everything else off the table. It makes you sound like you are being honest and realistic.

So...he begins with a sort of blanket approach that someone is making it hard for parents to have options and he'll do something about that. Okay. What options will he open up for them, you ask? He'll let them leave their kids at their parents' house. See? Biden doesn't let you do that. I don't even know why, but he doesn't.
My first reaction was just to quip "It's so lucky some guy from Ohio found a microphone, because dang it my kids are school age now and it is too late, but I never thought of that and I feel silly because now it seems kind of obvious."
After an hour or so with it bumping around in my brain I guess the "beauty" of the answer is that the answer to most follow-ups is "Well whose fault is that?" His answer casts a heavy shadow of "This issue isn't as big a deal as Democrats make it out to be". The people struggling with the issue probably aren't going to vote for him anyway, but if he can tap into the boomers who are thinking "Why are these people moving off to the big city?" and "Why are moms leaving their kids in a daycare when they could be taking care of them themselves?" and so on, he actually might get a slingshot effect from this question instead of crashing into a gravity well.

Yeah, your attributing the same kind of "tactical genius" trait to vance that people used to give to trump. He had no answer, and floundered because he had to answer. They don't care about children or child care.
Edit: and when you consider what he's already said about "childless cat ladies" and the like... it kinda seems like he's blaming the mom for needing to work and not staying home to take care of the kids.
