Found Chicken of the Woods mushroom, cut it up and fried it, it does actually taste like chicken.

(Pizza Hut themed "pizza sandwiches". Usually, these are eaten "as-is" but the packaging encouraged us to toast them for a more "authentic" experience).

They don't have game shows about it. I think you've confused a small section of an old "variety show" on Japanese TV with a whole culture. It's akin to using a small sample from American daytime telly as indicative of the whole USA (or an episode of "Judge Judy" as a representation of the American legal system).

And American food isn't always "food shaped" or "normal":

For me, the weirdest thing was being offered melted marshmallows next to various roasted/grilled food at a "Golden Corral" restaurant in North Carolina.

And as for strange American flavour/food combos...

I just cooked the Pizza Hut sandwiches. They tasted like sweet, oriental meat sauce and mayonnaise...

And the missus just cooked-up some (soon to be out-of-date) pork, so she can freeze it and use it for other meals.

PrimalxConvoy, you live in Japan? How long have you been there?

There was a Ninja restaurant in NY, but apparently they closed down last year. Bummer. Themed restaurants in Japan are fun. Getting tickets was a pain, but TMM and I managed to hit the Eorzea Cafe (Final Fantasy XIV themed) in Tokyo and Osaka in Oct 2019. I would love to go back at some point, if they're still around by then.

One or twice a year we drive down to Mitsuwa Marketplace in NJ. I've been to the Chicago location too, highly recommend as it's a shopping plaza with Japanese stores, including a food court and large supermarket. There's smaller local Asian markets closer, but not as much of a selection, naturally.
