You obviously didn't have the custard thick enough before pouring. Maybe another egg would've helped?

Ironbite-I dunno, I don't make custard.

Probably, but not sure *why* it wasn't thick enough. I've made custard successfully a few times before, but never baked on top of a cake like this recipe.

Salad? Vegetables?
Yes, the things that make an actual sandwich. Just putting some meat between bread doesn't make it a sandwich and every meal needs some vegetables in them, lest we want to spend time in hospital.

Even a McDonald's hamburger comes with gherkins...

Does when it’s brisket. Little sauce and maybe cheese is all it needs.
Can't agree there. That's probably why I didn't really enjoy the food that much when I was in America; too much meat and cheese and not enough veggies for balance.

A good steak or meat sandwich needs a good condiment and at least lettuce. If it's just a quick and savage creation while at home alone, that's fair, but for guests? No, it's common sense to add the basics, such as some salad or cooked veggies too.

For American BBQ, things like lettuce, tomatoes and onion don’t really go on it. That’s saved more for a hamburger

With a pulled pork sandwhich, one way is to put coleslaw on it. Mac n cheese is another acceptable topping for either brisket or pork.

A bbq joint I went to in Nee Mexico, and others do this too, melt some pepper Jack cheese on chopped brisket. Some grilled red and green peppers with onions was on it too.

In all honesty, you make your sandwhich on how it’s going to taste good to you. That is all that really matters. I normally have a rounded meals, add in some kind of starch with mashed taters, fries or rice. Some kind of veggie. Again for me, I don’t cook and eat bbq to be healthy. I cook and I eat because it’s delicious.

When I was at a BBQ at my American friend's home in NC, salad and veggies were available for sandwiches, or plates, so I don't really agree with your point about hamburgers being the sole home for such salad items. In most countries, cooked veggies or salad are just a normal part of sandwiches, especially those that are "dry" with large amounts of cooked meat in them. It's not really/always about being "healthy" but rather in creating the optimal taste. Hardly anyone would just eat a plate of meat, and so that's why salad and veggies are added to sarnies too. They create a slightly "damp" texture and help to improve the taste of the meat.

Although I've had (and continue to make) rough and ready sarnies without salad (due to laziness or lack of ingredients), if I had the choice between a meat sandwich with or without salad/vegetables in it, I would almost always choose the one with veggies included. I would view a BBQ rather poorly if my host didn't have any veggies or salad to serve alongside the meat and carbs... :(

Here's some guilty (basically veggy-free, unless you count the seaweed) "Hawaiian-styled" onigiri at my local conbini in Japan. They've just started a Hawaiian-themed promotion, so I'll probably post some of the other food later on.

I had the spicy fried chicken with mayonnaise and it wasn't bad.

I await your, quite rightly deserved, scorn for my hypocrisy...
