*Puts on his nerd glasses* Actually, you're both wrong! This is the Japanese version so it's a Okorizaru! (A combination of "okoru" for "angry", and "saru" for "monkey") See if you can listen for the name in the short!

I'm a little surprised there wasn't English subs. Even on the Japanese videos, there are often English subtitles. I think there will be a dub version, so I'll try to remember to link to that, if or when it happens

XD Yeah, I heard Okorizaru and just assumed it was Infernape since that would be a close translation.

Started a new file in Brilliant Diamond. Decided to force myself to use only Pokemon I've never used before. Early Sinnoh being what it is, it took me two badges in to get a full team, but now I'm running Monferno, Budew, Psyduck, Rhyhorn, Drifloon, and Murkrow. Let's see how this goes.

You never used Monferno before in a Sinnoh run?! You've been playing on hard mode this entire time! It's one of the only fire types in the entire region! And arguably the only GOOD one.

Most of my previous Sinnoh runs were in Platinum, which added more fire types. And my first BD run, I had to use Turtwig because it's still one of my favorite starter lines in the franchise.

You gotta dust yourself off and get back on that goat!

Also, this short has English subtitles if you put on closed captioning. The Primeape (...I'm sorry, Okorizaru) short ALSO now has English subtitles via closed captioning now. So, you can now rewatch the short from last page in English, if you want.

I'd like to pick up a Pokemon game for my Switch. The last Pokemon game I had was Yellow, for my Game Boy Pocket. I also had Blue.

Which Switch Pokemon game should I pick up? My local stores have Sword, Scarlet, Violet, Brilliant Diamond, Legends Arceus, Let's Go, Eevee, and Let's Go, Pikachu. From what I can tell, the Let's Go games are basically Pokemon: Yellow, but with modern graphics and Pokemon Go's battle-free catching mechanics. Brilliant Diamond is also a remake of an older game (not sure if it had the Go mechanics too). Sword, Scarlet and Violet are mainline games, and Legends Arceus is... not? It looks like a mainline game to me from what I have seen, but maybe it isn't.

Arceus looks interesting, though if it isn't a real Pokemon game, maybe that isn't what I want. I'm so confused.

Yeah, correct on Let's Go games. Brilliant Diamond is basically a 1:1 remake of Gen 4 and I don't recall any significant differences.

Legends Arceus basically merges open world action RPG like Breath of the Wild or Skyrim with Pokemon Go's free-form catching and traditional battling. You can get hurt yourself if you get attacked outside of a pokemon battle, and the "boss" fights usually have some sort of action element before you can trigger a battle, to try and summarize without spoiling. It's kind of it's own thing, but it does have unique pokemon, or at least unique forms if that's a draw. I actually really enjoyed it, even if I had trouble on the action segments of the later bosses.

Out of the Switch games, I'd probably recommend Sword and Shield the most, especially if they still have the bundle with the two DLCs included. The Let's Go games are remakes of Red/Blue/Yellow with Go catching mechanics, so if depends if you have that kind of Kanto nostalgia (and/or if you like or dislike the motion controls for throwing, but you don't have to use them with the Switch in handheld mode). Scarlet and Violet are good, but they were pretty buggy at launch, and while it's mostly been patched out now, it can still be a little unstable from time to time. Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl are excessively faithful remakes of Diamond and Pearl (they didn't take advantage of anything Platinum added, so the only real extra is being able to find Pokemon in caverns in the Grand Underground), so if you've played those before, there's not much new to it. And Legends Arceus, while a great game in its own right, is pretty different from the main games mechanically. Sword and Shield still feel like the most solid of the Switch main series games to me. YMMV, of course.

Sword & Shield or Scarlet & Violet are good picks to get back into things.

if you played before, Sword & Shield might be easier because it's a more linear experience compared to Scarlet/Violet's mostly open world.

If you haven't played since the Gameboy days, honestly...Brilliant Diamond or Shining Pearl might be good games to get back into the swing of things. They'd play the most like the games that you remember, so you can re-learn the type weaknesses and gameplay tropes before trying out any of the newer games. They get a lot of flak and bad reviews, but they're not really bad games. They're just disappointing remakes since they didn't include the improvements from Platinum for the DS. They make a few weird choices, and there IS a difficulty spike once you reach the Elite Four, so you're going to have to grind for a while to actually beat the game. But, overall, it might be a way to ease you back into things.

Sword and Shield are kind of a link between the "old" and "new" styles of Pokemon. It's fairly linear, but there are a few big open areas. It's story isn't anything to write home about, but it's got a few impressive looking areas, here and there. Some Pokemon are visible in the overworld, and some are still randomly found in patches of grass. If you want something a little more modern, but still firmly rooted in the gameplay you know, this wouldn't be a bad choice. If you're willing to try something a little bit different, I'd give this one a try.

Scarlet and Violet would be the next step towards the "modern" style of Pokemon. It's open world, but there's no level scaling, so you are encouraged to take things in a certain order. If you take the intended order, you basically end up swinging back and forth between the left and right side of the world map, which means a fair bit of backtracking in the early game. You may actually get lost, that's how big the world map is. And ALL the Pokemon are now visible on the overworld, without any random battles. But, it's probably got the best story out of any of the Switch Pokemon games. And the characters are great! Some of these characters have become some of my favorites in the entire franchise. There's also the bugs, which have mostly been ironed out by now, but it still doesn't perform the best. Be sure to save often, just to be sure you don't lose any progress, and be sure to download ALL the patches before you start playing. This one might challenge you in some ways, but I do think it's the second best Pokemon game on Switch.

Legends Arceus is my personal pick for the best Pokemon game on Switch. But, it's also dramatically different than anything else the franchise has ever attempted to do before. The focus isn't on battling in this game. The focus for the majority of the game is on catching Pokemon. You have to catch the same Pokemon multiple times in order to level up the Pokedex and gain ranks and abilities, which is more fun than it sounds. You can catch Pokemon without ever actually going into a battle. You can craft your own items. You get to watch your "hometown" expand and grow. It's a breath of fresh air. But, it's also VERY different from any other game in the series. I think it's worth trying out, but maybe only after you play one of the other games, at least. This game is....almost more for players who have grown bored of Pokemon's formula? It mixes things up so much, that you might not even consider it to play like other Pokemon games. Even the battle system is slightly different. So, I probably wouldn't recommend this game as your first one, but....maybe try it out eventually.

Personally, I would probably avoid Lets Go Pikachu or Eevee, for now. For most players, the control scheme is kind of annoying. The motion-controlled capturing mechanics are kind of forced on you, no matter what. It's not a bad game, the controls just take getting used to. And otherwise...it's Pokemon Yellow. I think all the other games on this list are more interesting, personally.

So, to sum up, I'd say go for Brilliant Diamond or Shining Pearl if you just want to re familiarize yourself with the basic Pokemon gameplay mechanics. Or Sword and Shield if you're up for something slightly more modern, but still accessable. Then once you've found your footing, maybe try out Scarlet or Violet. Or if you're up for more of a challenge and a change of pace, maybe try Legends Arceus.

I'm at that point where I've long since completed Scarlet and Violet. And since playing them both basically means I played the same game twice and there's also plenty other games to be playing, I haven't even touched a Pokemon game in quite a while.

I wouldn't mind having a new game come out just because there's increasingly fewer games with menu-based combat. But I'm having les and less money to spend on two versions of the same game just because of different box legends and Pokemon selection.

Honestly, at this point I'd be thrilled with a low-res poke-park that does absolutely nothing except let me get every Pokemon out of the bank so I can stop paying the monthly fees.

I ended up getting Arceus as I want to catch more than I want to battle and all the changes seemed pretty good to me. I haven’t opened it, but my stepson isn’t pleased as he was hoping to play as well and wanted to battle. I may end up grabbing either Brilliant Diamond or Let’s Go Pikachu for him.

The Let's Go games can only battle with each other. If he wants online battling with other players, Scarlet and Violet, as the latest games, will be the most active.
