Introducing TMMN Archive!

This is an ongoing game history preservation project I've decided to undertake in the interest of preserving the various press releases and other related materials from over the years.

Kicking things off is the official press release for Mega Man 8!

My hope is that they can get Ian on Classic, since he's freelance.

Also I guess I need to throw some money at at least a couple of these Jada guys if I want them to eventually get to Air Man...

If comics is what it takes to finally resolve Legends 2's ending, so be it. A game would be best, but it's been squashed too many times to have any faith in it ever happening.

Yeaaaaaaaaah, I was going to do this someday. Ever since I warned others not to. Am actually currently sick, so to make myself happy:
(Also I've always typed it MegaMan rather than Mega Man. Sorry about that if it bugs you.)

MegaMan
Played on NES

The game that started it all. It took me a while to actually get this one in the series when I started to collect it.
It's... just not very good, but it was the first. It was very obviously rough around the edges.

I'm ashamed to admit I've only ever beaten it while using the pause damage trick.

Rating D. Not horrible, but honestly I have little desire to play through it again.

MegaMan 2
Played on NES

Overhyped honestly. It's a fine game, but it lacks later upgrades that to me are DEFINING MegaMan abilities.
Still a rather good game though, with great music.

Rating B

MegaMan 3
Played on NES

TECHNICALLY my first MegaMan game ever, but I only got to play like one stage at my friend's house. On a small black and white TV.
I enjoy it as it gives me my slide ability. The Doc Robot stages were a neat idea. Does feel a little on the unpolished side though.

Rating C

MegaMan 4
Played on NES

Honestly I don't have much to say about this one. You got the Megabuster and otherwise it's pretty average.

Rating C

MegaMan 5
Played on NES

THIS was actually the first MegaMan game I really played, and the first one I ever owned. I paid five bucks for it waaaaaaaaay back in 95 or something from a Warehouse video rental store. I love this game, but I'm likely biased because it was my first. All in all though I find the experience rather solid.

Rating B+

MegaMan 6
Played on NES

So I was a fan before this game got released over here in America, because I remember people pointing out that Toys R Us had it new in box. I was SO damn excited to play this game. It was neat buying a brand new NES MegaMan game and getting to play it, and honestly I don't mind this game at all. The Rush Jet armor is great!

Rating: B-? I wouldn't say it beats out 2 or 5, but it's solid enough.

MegaMan 7
Played on SNES

Managed to snag a copy of this from a mom and pop video rental store that was selling off their old SNES games. (Also picked up Soul Blazer, B.O.B. and one or two others I can't remember. Don't have B.O.B. anymore though)

Man what a graphic upgrade! Also Bass is around now!

Frankly I love this game. I love that you get a version of the Rush Jet in it as well. I wish that'd come back.

Also this game is by FAR the HARDEST Wily boss in any of these games for me.

Rating A

MegaMan 8
Played on PS1

What I would give to have a freaking copy of the Saturn version! I've wanted to fight Woodman and Cutman for YEARS now.

Other then the really annoying "JUMP JUMP SLIDE SLIDE" sections, I rather enjoy this game. I also just really love that the Robot Masters talk to you. Tengu man is in fact my favorite Robot Master ever!

"Kid, you're hardly worth the effort!" *lands, cool blades come out*

Rating A-

Rockman and Forte/MegaMan and Bass
Played on emulator, SNES using a trick to get it to play on American consoles. (A little GBA)

Even on an emulator with save states, getting that Groundman CD was a pain in the butt.

It's a pretty neat little game, and HEY Tengu Man is back!

Super Famicon/Rom is the way to go though. Playing as Bass I'd rather have a button designated to his dash rather then ONLY being able to double tap. I've never been good at that double tap to run/dash stuff.

Rating C

MegaMan 9
Played on Wii Ware/ Xbox 360

It was great having a new MegaMan game after so long, but I hate HATE they tried to model it after MM2. I want my slide and Charge shot! No Protoman doesn't count because it comes with the VERY BIG DOWNSIDE of taking twice as much damage, and twice the knock back. (I had hoped maybe getting no helmet would make him like MegaMan, but no it does the same thing as it does for MegaMan and DOUBLES the ALREADY DOUBLED knockback and damage. You did Protoman dirty Capcom.

It's still pretty solid. I love some of the music, but man I want that slide at the very least.

Might get bonus points for Splash Woman. It was just nice to finally have a girl join the fighting.

Rating B

MegaMan 10
Played via Xbox 360 Download

I've played through this once, don't think I ever did as Bass despite the fact I want to. It's pretty much the personification of 'average' It's just okay. Also BOO Boo on not ever doing another female Robot Master. Splash Woman shouldn't be the only one ever.

Rating C

MegaMan 11
Played via Switch

Man the trailer had me hyped. The double gear system is a neat little addition. Only played through it once. Didn't hate it.

Rating C

MegaMan in Dr. Wily's Revenge
Played via Super Gameboy

Actually got this in box by helping a friend do yard work all day. Remember it being a decent run.

Rating B

MegaMan II Gameboy
Played via Super Gameboy

I remember it was short.

Rating C

MegaMan III Gameboy
Played via Super Gameboy

I've beaten it, but don't recall too much. Really wish we'd get a collection of these for modern systems.

Rating C

MegaMan IV Gameboy
Played via Super Gameboy

Again don't remember much. Just that it was portable MegaMan and made decent enough.

Rating C

MegaMan V
Played via Super Gameboy

The one everyone wants and for good reason. It's a neat NEW adventure with NEW boss fights. An all around great time.

Rating A

MegaMan Soccer
Played via SNES

Yeah so I'm not a sports person. Only played this cuz MegaMan. It's eh. Kinda annoyed they left the ending not programed to trigger.

Rating D

MegaMan in the Wily Wars.
Played via Genesis Classic

Didn't get too far in this, though I really want to. I also got the Limited Run Physical release of this so I can play it on my actual Genesis if I so desire.

Rating TBD (To be determined)

Rockman Battle and Fighters
Played a bit on a non color Neo Geo Pocket which I had to sell years ago.

I have this complete in box. It was neat from what little I played. I've been meaning to buy an actual Neo Geo Pocket Color so I can really enjoy it.

Rating TBD

There are other sorta classic series games like Rockboard, but these are what I've played.

(Also I've always typed it MegaMan rather than Mega Man. Sorry about that if it bugs you.)

Technically, it's both.

It's "Mega Man" in titles ("Mega Man 2," "Mega Man X," "Mega Man Battle Network," etc.), and for most of the heroes in the main timeline who bear the name...

...until you get to Mega Man Legends, where the hero's name is MegaMan Volnutt. Similarly, due to the way file names were/are, the one from Mega Man Battle Network is "MegaMan.EXE," or "MegaMan" for short. And the hero from Star Force, set later in that timeline, follows the same.

Does feel a little on the unpolished side though.

Probably because it was unfinished.

What I would give to have a freaking copy of the Saturn version! I've wanted to fight Woodman and Cutman for YEARS now.

Big same.

There are other sorta classic series games like Rockboard, but these are what I've played.

Don't sleep on Power Battle and Power Fighters.

Kinda surprised by the low score of Mega Man IV. I think it's right up there with V, with the main difference being that V was wholly-original.

I liked 10 more than 9, if I'm being honest.

Not sure I knew about Proto Man taking quadruple damage from not wearing a helmet, though. Dang.

That feature sucks, anyway. Costs way too much, and IIRC, you lose it when you die, yeah? Plus the damage thing... man, I just want to play as these guys without their helmets on, I don't need a whole rules change, too.

Weird on MM&B on SNES not letting you dash with A. I seem to remember that it would let you, and checking GameFAQs seems to back that up.

You know what's funny? I've actually played Power Battle IN the Arcade. Chalk it up to being sick to forget that. I'll update this list later. It's pretty good. I do have them on one of the old collections as well.

Five was my first so it's that high a rating. 4 is below it, but this is also a time where I haven't played these games in like 20 years. If I had time to sit down and play through them all again, I might have different ratings.

Oh wait you mean the Gamboy title don't you? Still kinda same issue. I haven't played through them in decades so I don't recall much about them. So I gave most an average rating unless I remembered more about them. Which is basically only the first one and Five.
I liked 10 more than 9, if I'm being honest.
*shrugs* We're opposites there.

Well it never came out on the SNES aka never got an overseas release. Maybe on the Pal side of things, but not in America. That's why I said SUPER FAMICOM/Rom is the way to play it. The Dash thing I'm referring to is on the GBA. Since only two buttons. The only way to dash with Bass on that platform is to do the double tap. You can't assign the dash to a shoulder button sadly. I tried.

Sorry, that's what I meant. Rockman & Bass on SFC. (There have been translation hacks and the like...)

But yeah, on GBA, there was only double-tap. Gotcha.

Alright! Second round! Probably the last round too.

Okay first off there are a couple of Classic series games I forgot. One I'm very disappointed in myself for passing over:

MegaMan Power Battle
Played on actual arcade cabinet at a convention

This was neat. Really cool Arcade game. I know I have both this and the sequel on one of my Anniversary collections, but I got the Anniversary collections only a few years ago, so never actually sat down to play them.

Rating A

MegaMan Powered Up
Played on PSP

How did I forget this one? I bought a PSP for this and Maverick Hunter.
This game is fun. I love the chibi look, the new Robot Masters, and being able to play as Roll. I actually downloaded every costume you could get for Roll back in the day when this game got updates. It's a perfect remake of the first game. Play this instead of the original NES version.

Rating A+

MegaMan 2
Played via old flip phone.

Yeah so they did a port of some MegaMan games for mobile phones like YEARS ago. I still have this on a flip phone of mine. It's okay for what it is, but yeah likely the worst way to play it.

Rating D

Okay now for the X games and beyond:

MegaMan X
Played on SNES/PS4

I saw someone playing this before I got a copy and was blown away. Then I got to play it. Hands down my favorite incarnation of the Megaman series is the X series.
This game is great. Amazing. I love how you can now wall jump, I love the capsules, and I love how in this game beating certain bosses mess up the stage of another boss. This game is pretty much perfect. Any issues are just nit picks. (Oh I also loved being able to find a heart container in the stages that raise your life. The Hadoken powerup is also super cool.

Rating S

MegaMan X2
Played on SNES/PS4

Probably my favorite of the series, but a lot of that are the fond memories I have playing this with friends. Long story there I'll go into if you want, but for the game itself, I really like the little tweaks from the first game. Like just having the dash be part of your arsenal from the start. Also shout out to anyone that changes the dash to the R button like I do. The only way to play the X games in my opinion.

Getting the Dragon Punch power up was again just cool. I also just really like the X Hunters, and how you can alter the story due to your actions.

It also has one of my favorite armor upgrades. The G Crush. Man I love that. Even if it took my friends and I HOURS to find the stupid thing. Again though, story for another time.

Rating SS

MegaMan X3
Played on SNES

I traded a guitar for my SNES copy. Honestly I don't think it's AS good as the previous games. It kinda sucks that you can play as Zero, but only for limited parts in the stage, and if he dies he's just gone. Because of that I don't tend to play as him all that often. I just stick with X.

Not sure what it is, but this game also has two of my favorite music tracks. I could listen to the BGM of Blizzard Buffalo and Neon Tiger for hours.

The pink capsules were a neat idea, though given the secret of the 'Orange Armor' I obviously never go for any of them now. Also a shame we stopped with the Street Fighter moves. I think it'd be funny to see X do the Hurricane kick. XD

Rating A

MegaMan X4
Played on PS1

The first game that let you play as Zero, and honestly I think it's just a bit more fun to play as him. I've played through this several times. Sadly this was the last 'GREAT' X game. Not that I hate the rest, but they don't quite reach this peak again.

Rating A+

MegaMan X5
Played on PS1

So... here's where things began to drop off a bit. The game is okay, but it began the start of stages that just aren't fun. Jet Bike level I'm looking at you.
Also I'm sorry I was never a fan of the Guns N Roses names. I will forever be annoyed with that. Then of course you had the weird countdown and RNG success rate for those things and it's just kind of a mess. Controls are still nice and tight, and there is fun to be had.

Oh god I forgot about Alia and her trying to explain to you how to play the game. Capcom did NOT interject that in properly.

Rating C

MegaMan X6
Played on PS1

I know most wouldn't agree, but I kinda think this is the better game between X5 and X6. I liked the story in this one, it's just too bad it seems to set up stuff we never go back to.

Rating B

MegaMan X7
Played on PS2

Okay we all know the problems this game has. I don't quite hate it, but it's not a favorite of mine. I played through it enough to get all three endings. One for each playable character. I also actually like Axl. Just yeah... the gameplay. At least we got like one or two 2.5D Levels. Pretty much the best levels of the game.

Rating D- Can't quite give it an F, but it comes so close.

MegaMan X8
Played on PS2

I don't get the hate for this game. This was such a step in the right direction that it baffles me people hate it. I loved it for the most part. It has two jet bike stages that are NOT good, so not a fan of that. Otherwise mostly everything else is solid. Each character feels good to control, they have a style that is different enough to make it fun to play them. I love the team up attacks. I liked farming for the metal things that let you upgrade. I just liked this. Shame it was the last.

Rating A

MegaMan Xtreme
Played on Gameboy SP

Can't remember much, but I know I was having fun.

Rating B

MegaMan Xtreme 2
Played on Gameboy SP

It was really cool to see Iris around again. I did enjoy this game, but I never actually beat it. I got to the final boss and I think you have to use a very specific item, or do a very specific thing to hurt them and I didn't figure it out at the time. I need to go back and finish this.

Rating B

MegaMan Command Mission
Played on PS2

Only started it, never actually got far or beat it. I liked what I saw. One day when I have time I'll complete this thing. At least just having tried it out I had the save data to fight Cutman in X8.

Rating TBD

MegaMan Maverick Hunter X
Played on PSP/PS Vita

So yeah I downloaded this to my Vita when you could do that. It's honestly the better way to play it. Man I wish we got more of these. I would just about KILL for a Maverick Hunter X2. If only.

It takes everything from the original game and upgrades it. I also love I get to play as Vile now. Vile was always cool. My only nitpick off the top of my head is I'm not sure why they tried to re-write the story to basically have Dr. Cain dead by the end of this game. I know he vanishes after X3, but I actually always wished he'd show up more. Even if he doesn't really do much. (Probably why he got cut, but eh I still rather have him. I'm weird.)

THE OTHERS:

MegaMan Legends
Played on PS1

Wish I could get the N64 version just to have it and mess around in it. At least I have the better version. Another version of MegaMan, but I really liked the setting and the 3D gameplay wasn't bad. Also even though he's barely in the game MegaMan Juno is cool. I kinda wish we could get remakes of these games, but I doubt it'd ever happen.

Also it was the first appearance of Tron Bonne, and everyone loves her! (I'm sure there are some who don't, but yes I enjoyed her character)

Rating A

Misadventures of Tron Bonne
Played on PS1

I love this game. I'm so glad I got it when I did given it's like one of the top rarest and most expensive PS1 games now. The action levels are just so much fun. I love having the Serverbots to order around. I like the puzzle levels too and the first person RPG ones are neat too. I can't remember if there is one I'm forgetting...

Played this several times. To THIS DAY when my brothers and I are in a long line for food, we start humming the Cafeteria mini game music from this game. (We also start doing Server bot voices to each other of 'A lunch! Curry Rice!' ETC. Don't judge me)

A shame the game is so hard to get, because I wish more people could play it.

Rating A

MegaMan Legends 2
Played on PS1

Great sequel. I love the extra islands, the story is top notch. Man I wish we got that third game. >_<
My only gripes are:

1- What the hell is up with that quiz thing with the village elder in that one town? It's asking stuff like "Who was the lead singer of band?" I don't know! What does this have to do with MegaMan!?

2- Capcom PLEASE. If somehow we get remakes or new games. PLEASE let me shoot my megabuster while using the rolling skates. Seriously WHY can't I do that? It'd be so much fun.

Rating A+

MegaMan Zero
Played... via emulation... ^^;

So... yeah I sorta got a GBA ROM of this back in the day to play it. (I do own it. I need that DS collection of these games, but I do have the Legacy collection) I remember using save states a lot. I know this game is HARD.

Rating A

MegaMan Zero 2
Played via GBA SP

Okay so this one I played legit. Though I'm not sure I beat it. I remember finding out about the ranking system and so basically got caught up trying to 'Git gud' in order to achieve those special upgrades you have to get a high ranking to get. I do know I was having fun.

Rating A

MegaMan Zero 3 and 4
...Never actually played them. In fact I apparently still don't own Zero 3 for GBA.

Rating TBD

MegaMan ZX
Played on DS

I don't know if I ever beat this one. I really need to go and do that.
I did enjoy what was here, but yeah the map is a bit messy.

Rating B

MegaMan ZX Advent
Played on DS

Okay. Look I know this won't be usual for most, but I LOVE this game if I'm playing Grey. Just his story, the gameplay, having Alie being the one with ZX. I love it. Love it to the point I did all the challenges and got the 8-Bit Model A. Ashe is okay and I did play through as her once, but I just prefer playing this with Grey. So much I think this is my second favorite MegaMan game.

I love LOVE being able to become the bosses. Yes there aren't as many reasons to actually use them as I wish there was, but I still find ways they are helpful. I love this game.

Rating S

MegaMan Battle Network
Played on GBA

This is the only one of these I've played. (Well of the normal games. We'll get to that next game.) It's an okay set up. I'm just not a fan of the battle system. Never beat this and never went any farther. I'm still missing a chunk of these in my collection.

Rating C-

MegaMan Network Transmission
Played on Gamecube

So yeah I own and have TRIED to play this, but I really feel it's luck based. Like I've played a few times, gotten to Torch Man and just died because you can't really avoid his attacks, and it seems if you don't have a perfect roll of chips, he's just impossible to take down.

Rating D

Mighty No 9
Played on PS4

About the only other MegaMan like game I feel is worth putting on here. Honestly I like it. It's not perfect by any means, but I see the potential of this franchise. It just sucks they screwed up so much that I doubt we'll ever see a second game. The dash mechanic is just brilliant. It's so much fun and easy to get used to. At least I thought so. We just need more work on the stages, and some other tweaks. I feel if this got the same kind of upgrading we got between MegaMan 1 to 2, we'd have an absolute BANGER on our hands. Man I wish I could see that game.

Rating B+

And I think that's it. Like I said I'm missing some Battle Network games. (I have 1, 2, 3 blue, 3 white, and then 5 Team colonel. That's it.) I only recently got the Star Force games, and haven't had a chance to see if I'd like them yet.

I'm sure there are some games I'm missing, but I don't think I have them. Also I do have access to the racing game in my X Collection for PS2, but not played it.

Okay. Your guys turn! :p
