That beautiful 90s mullet goes into subspace when he puts the helmet on.

Yeah, I was going to say, "Maybe the hair?"

Teenage Tony Stark...

"Oh, man, I shouldn't have eaten those Pop Rocks while drinking a soda. Now I need to keep this arc reactor working at all times, or else the mixture will reach my stomach, and KABLOOEY!!"

...this, coming from one of the biggest marks for Batman Beyond that you'll ever know.

Armoured Adventures is not Batman Beyond, but it's still far better than "Iron Man, but High School" has any right to be. The best part is that the Mandarin is also in high school and they both have to "go to the bathroom" to do their comic book fights.

So I've gotten a few questions, as a Canadian living and working in the US, about my thoughts on the current events between our two countries. Well...

Oh man, I've always wanted Web Armor Spider-Man. He's even on my wish list, but it's just never happened.

Those hands are my only problem with that figure. It's a major plot point in Bailey's book that he doesn't have webs or web shooters (so he doesn't do the hand thing.) I mean he's specifically "The Webless Wonder."

Nitpick aside I got this one as soon as I could. It's a very fun comic book.

-ZacWilliam, it should have come with an unmasked head (fangs or no fangs)

Agreed on all counts. I'd have preferred gesturing hands to webshooters and I just used them here because they worked better in that pose then fists did.

So I picked up the Marvel Legends 20th Anniversary Iron Man. I had wanted this figure when it came out three years ago, but I never bit because they wanted over $30 for it. McFarlane DC Multiverse range from $20-$25 for most single figure releases, and most Marvel Legends figures are about the same. The 20th Anniversary Marvel Legends line, despite having some great looking figures, just didn't seem worth $32. There really wasn't anything on the card that justified that price hike.

Anyway I guess a bunch of people felt the same as me, because I picked this bad boy up for $15.99!

One reason I wanted this figure is because it's a version of the Iron Man armour we don't get toys of all that often. Usually his classic suit is the one that gets the most love if Hasbro wants to do a classic comics Iron Man. The short lived version before that, with the subtler shoulder cuffs, pointy mask, and no hip transistors, almost never gets referenced. And that's what they did here.
Additionally Hasbro gave the ribbed sections of the toy a drybrushing, which is a very nice nod to the ToyBiz Marvel Legends. In fact I'd say it's better here. ToyBiz tended to go so overboard with drybrushing that a lot of their figures almost look dirty. Here Hasbro kept it subtle and in the right spots, so it's a nice homage without being crazy.

He comes with an extra set of hands, an unhelmeted Tony head, and some effect parts, which are pretty standard for Marvel Selects Iron Man figures. Again, why I didn't feel the $32 price tag was justified. He does come with a figure stand based off of the old Marvel Legends figure stands and a cardboard backdrop, but McFarlane has that sort of thing and they're always essentially freebees.

Anyway the backdrop is two sided. On one side it replicates the comic the original ToyBiz Marvel Legends Iron Man came with, while the other replicates the diorama piece the original came with.

Yeah. We've gone from a pack-in comic and diorama piece to a cardboard cutout and a drawing of a diorama piece. Again, if I may be allowed to glaze McFarlane, their DC Page Punchers come with full comics and they're $25 a piece. This thing was $32.
And I do understand... prices go up, materials get more expensive... I wouldn't expect a comic and a diorama piece for $25... but if they'd given us those things at $32... the diorama piece might have convinced me that the jump from $25-$32 was worth it. The cheep-o options and the price hike though? No thank you.
Still, all of this for $16? I'll take it!

And yeah. That unhelmeted Tony head. Hasbro has done a couple unhelmeted Tony heads. There's been classic Tony, 70s Tony, 90s Mullet Tony, Holographic Tony, Robert Downy Jr Tony, Robert Downy Jr At Home from that bad video game Tony...
I guess they were going for a 70s looking Tony Stark here (which doesn't really fit since this armour comes from the 60s) but it just ends up looking like Charles Bronson.

Oh well. I'll just stick with my 90s mullet Tony. It's not accurate to this suit either, but I grew up with the 90s Iron Man cartoon and comics, so mullet Tony is my Tony.

All in all? The Marvel Legends 20th Anniversary figures are pretty good, the backdrops are neat, but don't pay the $32 they asked for them. A few places have them on steep discount due to a lot of people not liking the asking price, so look for a deal if you want one. Still, for 50% off? I'm happy.

Say whuh?
Marvel tried to get in on the "live service" game model at the height of the MCU hype, with an Avengers game by Square Enix.
The game tried to leverage the MCU's popularity without actually using the MCU likenesses, since that stuff is expensive as hell. So you got a live action-y Captain America that didn't quite look like Chris Evans, a live action-y Iron Man that didn't quite look like RDJ, etc...

Of course there was a toy tie-in because this game was gonna be big! And everyone would want not quite right looking live action versions of everyone!
narrator voice: They did not.

Which eventually led to this kinda live action-y but very much not RDJ-looking Tony Stark head.

Yeah I remember it feeling really weird. It wasn't just that they didn't look like the MCU actors it was that it looked like the Avengers you would have gotten for a kids party. The looks were too close and too different at the same time and felt like understudies or community theater Avengers

-ZacWilliam, I was enjoying the single player story ok till I got to the part where it wanted me to do generic multiplayer-feeling missions against generic hordes then immediately lost all interest.

It felt like them trying to have it both ways. Doing a comics style game would have sidestepped the need for MCU likenesses but the MCU was the hot thing at the time so they wanted it to evoke that. Without paying for the MCU actors' likenesses. So you get this weird live action looking Marvel Avengers cast, but they don't look like how they're supposed to look. It doesn't really appeal to anyone and just ends up looking like they used the MCU stunt doubles.

Funnily enough McFarlane actually did that for DC. Ben Affleck never signed off on his likeness rights for toys from The Flash, so when they made two figures based off of Batfleck's appearance in that movie they specifically based it off of Ben's stunt double. I digress though.

The whole Marvel's Avengers game just ended up being an awkward thing that wasn't the MCU but still tried to be it as much as possible.
From a toy perspective... I'm an Iron Man fan. MCU-based Iron Man Marvel figures with accurate RDJ heads are pretty plentiful. Why would I opt for the one that's not quite right?
