In some late news, the police are so reviled (in the US?) that even this little bit of late news is welcome IMO.

MultiVersus Replaces Velma's Controversial Cop Ability

MultiVersus-Velma-calls-police.jpg

"...The patch notes state that, instead of calling the police to take her foes away, Velma will now call in the iconic Mystery Machine with her Snoopin' ability. This passive ability sees Velma collect pieces of evidence throughout the match in order to trigger a powerful police takedown. Many fans were dismayed by Velma using the cops as a weapon against her foes, with some decrying the ability as promoting police brutality. So, the character's Scooby-Doo co-stars now kidnap Velma's foes instead...

a bunch of white folk kidnapping dudes in bed sheets is more acceptable than the cops doing their job. What a ******* world.

The head of the UK’s biggest police force has said it is “crazy” that he cannot sack “toxic” officers who have broken the law.

Responding to a disclosure in the Guardian that 150 officers are under investigation over allegations of sexual misconduct or racism, the Metropolitan police commissioner, Sir Mark Rowley, admitted that the force’s vetting procedures were inadequate...

Clamour for inquiry into officers who let David Carrick remain in Met

"The Metropolitan police and the government are coming under pressure to punish officers who allowed the serial rapist David Carrick to be shielded from the sack despite multiple warnings about his abuse and violence against women during his two decades in the force.

The demands came as the police watchdog, the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), confirmed it had no plans to investigate how Carrick went undetected...

...Carrick pleaded guilty on Monday to 49 charges against 12 women spanning from 2003 to 2020. It made him one of the worst sexual attackers in recent times. The crimes included 48 rapes as well as his locking victims in a tiny cupboard.

He used his status as a Met officer to facilitate his crimes. Carrick was formally sacked by the Met on Tuesday after a special hearing..."

LAPD sued for $50m over school teacher's death during arrest.

Mr Anderson taught high school English in Washington DC

The family of a black man who died in custody after being repeatedly tasered in Los Angeles has filed a $50m (£40m) lawsuit against the city and police.

Police released footage of high school teacher and father Keenan Anderson, 31, begging for his life and shouting, "they're trying to George Floyd me".

Officers said he was arrested after trying to flee from a car crash.

Civil Rights lawyer Benjamin Crump said the lawsuit would set a precedent that could help stop police killings.

Speaking on Friday at a news conference, Mr Crump said that police "want to push this under the rug like they want to do to all the young people they unjustly kill".

He asked why "de-escalation is only for white people", adding: "Why don't you engage black men with dignity and humanity?"

Mr Anderson, the cousin of Black Lives Matter co-founder Patrisse Cullors, is survived by his six-year-old son...

Tyre Nichols: Biden urges calm ahead of police beating video release.

_128433214_screenshot2023-01-26at6.38.50pm.png

Mr Nichols died three days after an encounter with police at a traffic stop.

President Joe Biden is urging protests in Tennessee to remain peaceful as officials plan to release video of an arrest that led to a motorist's death.

Bodycam video of the encounter with Tyre Nichols, 29, will be published on Friday and lawyers for his family said it will show him being severely beaten.

Five now-fired police officers face murder charges after Mr Nichols died days after a traffic stop 7 January.

Memphis is said to be on edge and police there have increased patrols.

"I'm sickened by what I saw," Tennessee Bureau of Investigation director David Rausch said on Thursday after reviewing the footage, describing the officers' actions as "absolutely appalling".

And here's what could be an official photo of the ex-officers (behind spoilers as possibly NSFW).

If it's any consolation: there's usually groups dedicated to public oversight on these kinds of things which will harass and harangue any such officers until they quit again. It's yet another band-aid solution, very short term.

Also, given how most police departments are, a "shortage of officers" isn't even a problem; if anything it's the solution to one.

I'm getting to the point where I think we need at least some sort of limited AI takeover. Robot cops who actually know the law, don't care if you're black and are actually programmed to de-escalate a situation would be a welcome change.

Then how about drones? They could be remote-controlled (and monitored) by qualified people from the safety of a secure facility. It would be hard for a drone-operator to make the case that they feared for their life when making a traffic stop.

Oh hey, does anyone else suddenly have an urge to go binge watch "dark angel"?

Plenty of cops have enough body armor that they almost never have to fear for their lives now, and it doesn't seem to have helped. Because it's not about whether their excuse is plausible or not. 99% of the time, they're not actually having to make their case to the general public, or an impartial jury, because they're not even getting charged in the first place. Their boss is in their corner because the corruption goes all the way to the top, the union is in their corner by design, and the AG is too afraid of being seen as "soft on crime" to press charges unless the case is so high-profile that it makes the national news and sparks riots.

How do you make sure that whoever programs the AI or controls the drones isn't an evil jackass?
