Box office update.

Last week Dumbledore bumped Sonic 2 down to #2 on the weekend scoreboard. This weekend The Bad Guys debuted and bumped Sonic 2 down to... #2. Actually Dumbledore fell down to #3. Sonic didn't budge. The Northman and The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent also debuted, but fell flat. So Sonic beat two new films and last week's winner.

Worldwide, Sonic 2 will crack $300 million some time this week.

TBF... Sonic 06 kinda erased itself...

So what you're saying is... the changing of history at the end of Sonic 06 could be seen as an in-universe explanation for Shadow's uncharacteristic behavior in post-06 games, in that the warping of reality caused him to have a personality shift from interesting to unlikeable. 🤓

Mostly boring. The Bad Guys held on to the #1 spot for a second week. Sonic 2 is still #2. Dumbledore is still #3.

Now here's the fun news. Worldwide Sonic 2 did finally crack $300 million. So did Dumbledore, which is slightly ahead grumble grumble. But the important thing is Sonic 2 has passed its predecessor's entire run, despite some tough competition. And it hasn't hit theaters in Japan yet, for some reason.

Sonic 2's box office run has been interesting to watch. Last week it finally started to struggle, cratering down to #5 for one day, before springing back up to #2 for five more days. Yesterday's numbers are finally in and it's back down to #5 again, for its second day ever.

It should be running out of steam by now, so that 5-day comeback is impressive.

I was surprised and happy to hear Ian Flynn is involved in here and also the Frontiers game. Hope he gets well compensated!

Obviously Doctor Strange completely dominated. In one weekend it leapfrogged Sonic 2's entire domestic run so far. MCU continues to be an unparalleled behemoth. Nothing can touch it.

However, Sonic 2 once again bounced back from a one-day #5 slump, and was #3 for the entire weekend. It's not MCU money but it's seriously respectable stuff.

So some fans have been hard at work making their own Season 3 for SatAM. Looks impressove for a fanwork, but the most important thing to come out of it is a cover of Fastest Thing Alive sung by Crush40's vocalist.

Okay, you got me really excited after reading this, but upon listening to it, it's.... okay? Just sounds like a, somehow, less energetic version of the original.

This a better look at the full project I would say, And it's bit more impressive with the animation.

The interesting thing about the Sonic movies is that they're explicitly family movies...but good. It puts them in a rather specific niche to where they can sort of defy competition. It's not an edgy thing pushing the PG-13 envelope and it's not something asinine meant to babysit without substance. I think Paramount has realized it has a fundamentally different type of cinematic universe to leverage that isn't just copying Marvel. If anything, I'd compare it to Spy Kids before the Avengers.

If only they took out the whole wedding subplot. But then, when I watched it, the lady got the most laughs.
The wedding scene wound up being weirdly genius since it accomplished two things. First, it was the introduction of G.U.N. which sets things up for the next movie. Second, it redeemed Rachel's character. It both made her more likable and turned her around to being okay with Sonic. I think this was pretty important for something in the movie I don't see being mentioned here:

While it was rather quick, Robotnik did mention planning to put people in machines during his Chaos Emerald infused rant. Which...is what he does in the games with cute animals. This could be the next movie's escalation if they use Robotnik again since G.U.N. took away his current resources. If they do, Jojo and/or Rachel make easy targets that have a recognizable face as opposed to nobody extras.

Honestly, I really liked the Wedding plot. I also love that they took the 'angry black woman' and 'woman scorned' tropea to natural but OTT conclusion of her basically going Rambo on GUN. Like its stupid, but its a fun stupid that works. And that's usually part of Sonic's charm; there is a lot of fun stupid stuff in the franchise that works becuase it tends to not take it self too seriously.

Sonic franchise as a family theme? Odd but, well, it's true for SatAM (they're all orphan kids fighting alone) and even Sonic Underground. It still felt veeery weird to me when he said the D word at the end of the movie though.

I don't remember that part about powering the upcoming troops that way but if that's the case, that's scary!

Friend wondered that would they introduce Amy Rose in the third movie or will she be overshadowed?

In the classic games, little animals run out of the badniks after you break them. SatAM took that to the extreme of actually turning people into robots.

If you're doing a Sonic adaptation, some form of robotization is going to have to come up. It's kinda part of the concept.

I was reading info on the Sonic Mania Egg robots, the Heavies, and, the way it's described when the Phantom Ruby transformed them, the captive animals inside are... gone? Can't be extracted anymore?

Either Amy or Rouge would make sense for the next movie. I just don't think we'll get both. While they have distinctly different roles, I don't know how much the cast size will swell.

Sonic franchise as a family theme?
Not the whole franchise, just the movies. It neatly falls into that space and once you realize that, it makes some decisions make more sense. And honestly, I think Sonic benefited.
