Superman (Legacy)- Summer 2025

Following a prior tease, the first trailer for Superman (with Legacy terming seemingly dropped) has been posted. Due July 11, 2025, the film marks the first major release of the brand new DC film universe under the direction of James Gunn. Reportedly, Gunn's major influence on the film comes from Grant Morrison's All Star Superman series.

And, at least in this trailer, Krypto is a good boi. Trailer also features appearances by Lex Luthor, Mr Terrific, Metamorpho, Hawkgirl, and Nathan Fillion's Guy Gardner (bowl cut and all). And a big ass Kaiju

The problem with releasing a movie like this with a character driven by "inherent belief in human goodness" as Gunn put it is that 2024 has proven definitively to me there really is no such thing as inherent human goodness.

Anyways….

I like what I’ve seen so far. My hope is that it does all it sets out to do to kick off the new DCCU(?) and manages to have some fun along the way.

I love this new take on the John Williams theme. I've only watched the trailer a couple times but I've had it on loop in the background while doing other stuff for quite a while. Which I guess is another way of saying there are a lot of things I think look bad or questionable, but you could put that timeless bit of music to anything and I'd get pumped up. Kind of interesting you have the Williams theme as a tie in the past, but the trailer doesn't look like a rehash of the Donner films and it doesn't look like the grimdark Snyder Supes (I did not care for Man of Steel at all.)

Nathan Fillion as a Green Lantern. Not familiar with this particular character, but Fillion is always great. Honestly I'd go see it for him alone.

Excited to see Hawkgirl. Finally watched the Justice League cartoons a couple years ago and if this iteration is half as good I'll be happy.

Guy Gardner is basically the “aggressive asshole” Green Lantern. One of his most famous interactions during the initial run of Justice League International saw him challenging Batman to a fight (sans power ring) over leadership. Batman takes him out in a single punch and the rest of league leave him on the ground.

Fillion will do the character proud ;)

Including Krypto is certainly a bold choice...

For James Gunn, the man who made a star out of a talking Racoon and a tree? That's right in his wheelhouse.

That's part of Gunn's charm; not only will include the weird comic stuff, he'll find a way to make it work. On Paper, GotG should never have worked, its a super obscure team with a lot of weirdness that at the time you could only really get in comics. Yet it became a rival to Avengers in popularity.

Earlier interviews indicated he was looking more towards the Silver Age of comics and All Star Superman (itself a love letter to much of the silver age type stories).
In that context, Krypto and the giant monster are definitely the kinds of things the Silver Age Superman stories would lean into.

I'm more excited now than I've been for a DC movie in decades. I have a great deal of faith in James Gunn. Last few properties he's touched has turned to gold. Hell, he was even able to make a decent Suicide Squad movie after that first debacle.

Krypto looks good. As a terrier fan myself, I love that we're going in that direction over, say a short haired lab mix.
The ancillary cast looks good. Nathan Fillion is going to make an excellent Guy. I love that they're going all in on accuracy with that horrid bowl cut.
Gunn also confirmed that there was a shot of the Engineer in the trailer and she's expected to make a splash in a later film.
Lex looks suitably business like with just that perfect touch of unhinged. I much prefer the animated Clancy Brown esque Lex Luthors to the Gene Hackman variety.

Very much liking the look of this movie so far. Like has been already mentioned, James Gunn does a great job of integrating elements that are weird and bizarre and "comic-ish" and making them work in ways you never thought they could.

Every time I see the name "David Corenswet," though, my brain refuses to parse it as anything other than "Corn-sweat," which actually does absolutely sound like something that Lois Lane would refer to Clark as. "Come on, Cornsweat, we got some actual journalism to do here."
