The "Trump" Expansion

I know we have a few other threads dealing with Trump and the GOP, but I think this topic deserves a dedicated chat to itself.
Donald Trump wants the US to 'buy' Greenland. He wants to annex Canada. He wants to reappropriate the Panama Canal and rename the Gulf of Mexico.

The article I linked to talks a bit about Greenland. The kicker, as far as I see it, is that Trump Jr. brought out a Greenlander who danced on his strings, saying "buy us" and other pro MAGA jive. Turns out he's the towns local drug dealer, with a huge rap sheet and a penchant for doing whatever he can for money and product. But, he played well on camera.

Honestly, what the hell is going on here? This sudden demand to expand the borders comes as Trump and the GOP still refuse to allow even the thought of statehood for Puerto Rico and DC. I know Trump is just idiotic and prone to flights of fancy, but I'm curious as to the impetus for this. Who's whispering in his ear and what's the end goal?

He got shot. It was almost all over, just like that. I think it finally got through to him that he's not going to be around forever, and he may not have much time left at all. He's going to be gone, but the world will still exist. Time is going to go on, but he won't get to be a part of it anymore. He's the kind of person who has an especially hard time with the idea, but now he can't ignore it.

He found a way to deal with it. He wants to change the world map so significantly that history can never forget Trump was here.

Putin wants NATO off his back, so his orange flunky is causing trouble on the other side of the world to take the heat off.

I can buy into the whole 'feeling his mortality' thing. Wanting to change the world and put his name on something that will last for longer than him. A legacy. But I'm not sure that's the whole thing.

This is a very specific thing. Something that he's really pushed hard on only in the past year or so. Could he have been so freaked out over the assassination attempts that he's putting real thought into the future? Or is there something else pushing him? Someone else?

Manifest Destiny 2.0 brought to you by your local corporate oligarchy. He also doesn't want any of the places he wants to purchase or conquer to be a states, he wants them to be territories. That way they won't have voting representation in Congress and can't foul up the Republican advantage in the Electoral College. The 'state' thing is just lip-service. Heck, Greenland falls shy of the 60 thousand residents required for statehood anyway.

Canada is automatically a State if they decided to go along with this. They don't have to get approved by the US Government. They are grandfathered in in the Constitution (so to speak).

That was part of the Articles of Confederation, not the Constitution. I don't think it applies anymore.

So senate republicans are apparently advancing legislation to allow Trump to begin negotiating to buy Greenland once he takes office.

I would LOVE it if the head of state in Denmark just called a press conference to say, "hug off, Trump".

If he comes and annexs my country I’m gonna become like the German tank commander in ww2. Lmao. Sadly the briefcase won’t kill him and the Brit’s will try to stop me. He will get hearing problems and possible concussion though. J/k But yes Orange Cheeto is insufferable.

It's not actually true. The Articles of Confederation had that provision and it was specifically for what is now Quebec. Once the Constitution was ratified, the offer was null and void. Congress WOULD have to approve any current Canadian province's statehood under current law.

I stand corrected.

I don't have a link, but I've heard that Trump has said he won't rule out sending troops to just try and seize Greenland.

i genuinely don't know how the joint chiefs will respond when he comes to them with this.
They're not stupid people. They know what this will mean.

The last time the US used it's military to outright conquer more territory was 1898(The Filipinos continued fighting for over a decade after that, but the US fighting there was more to KEEP the territory than to conquer it at that point). Threatening to drag us back into barbarism. Good going Citrus Don....
